Compaq laptop from Walmart

We bought DS (10) one last Nov for Christmas (he was then 9). Walmart had them 2 weeks ago for $299. I was able to get 4. My husband got one in GA, my FIL got one for us in Ohio and there were only 6 people waiting at my Walmart and they had at least 20. They made me pay in seperate transactions.

To say the least we liked it. We have given 1 to my mother and are using the other 3 for Read-a-Thon prizes at our elementary school (2 for kids and 1 for a teacher incentive)

Wow - can I teach at your school?? That is some prize! I think our "top readers" get a Barnes & Noble gift card, probably for about $10. I'd love to see how much those kids would read if the prize was a laptop! :rotfl:

I work in a classroom with K-2nd graders and we are always going on the computer with them. Yes, on the internet. There are some wonderful sites for them to explore. www.starfall.com, www.professorgarfield.com & www.funbrain.com are just a few to name. They are fun and educational. If anyone has any doubts about computers for 9 year olds, check out these websites. Sure you have to monitor children when they are on it, but you should be monitoring them while they are watching TV as well.. same thing, there are TV shows they should not be seeing. Yeah I know, there are perv's on the net, again, that is why as a parent, you should be watching your child and not using the computer as a baby-sitter.. The computer can open a world of knowledge to your child.... if used properly & they can have fun doing it....:thumbsup2 and for $300, at least you aren't investing a fortune if they spill something on the keyboard...or touch the screen a little too hard.

Thanks for the websites, they are awesome- I also love your tagline at the bottom of your posts!

My area is all out of these laptops, you can do a search on walmart.com to see if they are in a store near your zipcode. I plan on getting DD5 a netbook for Christmas and spending this amount, but with all the great reviews I will try and get this.

You are very welcome .... the three websites I posted are the three main ones the students are allowed to go on with out us sitting right next to them. We also go on the discovery channel site but that one of us is next to them at all times.. since they can wonder on that site...we usually use that one for research (animals, planets etc...)

I am glad some of you can use these websites with your own children.. they are fun sites...:goodvibes and like I said, educational.....and best of all FREE no CD's to order or upgrade after owning for a year...:lmao:

I love funbrain.com and so do my third graders! Another great one is www.iknowthat.com . The only annoying part of that is a window pops up asking you to register every time you go to play a game. But just click on "Maybe Later" and it goes right to the game. They have great stuff there!

I thought they were popular too, I'm trying to sell a Dell Mini 9 I bought for DD last Christmas - only used about 2 hours and I'm not getting a bite!! I even have a HP Light Scribe which I got at Best Buy for $105 included. All I'm hearing from on Craigslist are scammers:mad:

It is such a great deal.

I'm not sure what you are asking but Dell was just running a deal for the Mini9's for $199 and also people were grabbing them from the outlet for like $175, and they all come with Dell's 1 year warranty. That could be why nobody is interested in yours just yet :goodvibes

I think that might be the site my friend's granddaughter was telling me about. I will have to check it out. It may be something we can use in school too. Her granddaughter goes to a different school but in the same County as I am in.. different schools use different sites...gotta check them out.. Thanks!:goodvibes

That's what we're hoping!!:woohoo:

I got a $850 HP laptop at Walmart and it lasted 16 months. Never again. Sounds like other people have had luck, though.

I got a $298 one a few months ago and bought a 3 year warranty, including accident insurance, for $70 on squaretrade.com. They've replaced one already for my son, so I know the warranties are good:thumbsup2
