Does anyone know what the difference is really between the two cars with Alamo.

We usually have a 4 x 4 vehicle but as there are only 2 of us this time dont see the point in paying £80 more for this type when we dont really need it.

Any advice.

Thanks

Depends what models they have to choose from but should be slightly bigger body and engine size.

From Alamo comparison site:

US Economy Chevrolet Aveo or similar = UK Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 or similar

US Compact Nissan Versa or similar = UK Vauxhall Astra 1.6 or similar

https://www.alamo.com/fleetCompare.do?countryId=US&compareCountryId=GB

Have you got the best price possible? £80 is a big difference. I am looking at going for a week next month.

Cheapest Economy car with US rentacar/Alamo = £112(£137 gold)

SUV with Holiday Autos less discount less Quidco = £114.26(£145.28)

SUV only £2.26(£8.28 Gold) more than the Economy

For me to get this discount I follow the intructions here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/othe...t/734198-holidayautos-discount-worldwide.html
Worked no problem collecting from Alamo Tampa in Feb.

Thanks Wayne

We can get £265 for a basic car (corsa size) or £285 for the next size up or £343 for an SUV. This is for 12 days hire. with Alamo.
This is with Virgin Atlantic and gives me 1000 points for hiring:thumbsup2

Was originally looking at the basic compared to SUV but if it is a corsa dont think I will go for that type.

Dont know whether to just get the mid size SUV as before

12 days thru that link would be £228.51 (£290.55 Gold) for an SUV. £343 is far too high for 12 days rental IMO.
I just dislike using Virgin, couple of years since I landed on a Virgin plane and the rep was telling me where to go which was wrong place, I was trying to tell her she was wrong but wouldn't have it, I ended up walking away from her and going where I needed to. I never get on well with reps:rotfl2:

They are a reputable company and will be Alamo car same as Virgin(unless they have changed suppliers since Feb) Your choice but I wouldn't pay more just to use Virgin myself.

when i rented this size last year, they had the compacts and the economy cars in the same row - in other words, you could select either one, regardless of what you had contracted for....

i had reserved the cheapest one - when i came to the check in desk, the guy tried to convince me that it would be too small and i should upgrade..

i refused...

then i went out to the parking lot and discovered i could pick either one...that they were in the same row.....i ended up picking the more expensive one, but paying the lower price..

don't get tricked by alamo...

Just received Email from Hertz #1 Gold club, 20% off USA rentals until 15th Dec, the code works with Quidco so there might be a bargain on there, 12 days rental showing from £178 less 10% cashback. Discount code 748100

We booked an economy car with Dollar last year, at the desk they tried to upgrade us, we declined, but when we went to pick the car it was no different to a compact, and was fine for us for 2 weeks.

Wayne, just tried the 15 % off link, works fine, dates 15th aug-1st sept 2012 picking up at dis car care centre for a 4 door compact, dont need the big one cases already at the accomodation coming out at £303, beats usrentacar by nearly £80, dont think i'll get better than that, tempted to book it now, done and dusted then . What do you think??

My opinion is its too early to book for next year, prices almost always come down nearer the time, if you search from 15th Oct -1st Sept this year it comes out at £50 less than your dates, I very rarely book until between 3-1 month before travelling for the best rates, unless I see a bargain.
The only way I would book so far out is if I see a misprice/error or it came with a cancellation option.
No one knows what will happen in next 12 months, you could be correct to book now at that price but my opinion is wait until next year and all rental companies have released prices.

Im paying 331 for 14 days rebtal with the top insurace with full tank of fuel etc

I have just found the same dates for £273 with alamo plus 9% cashback to take off with quidco, free cancellation as well!!

Went to netflights via quidco so got cashback as well, we booked thrifty as we got a slight refund when taking the most expensive insurance so took the price down
