There are very specific needs for tornado victims that the children may be interested in.
I know Joplin lost their high school, and many elementary and high schools in Alabama were destroyed. My work is having a book fair to buy books for destroyed schools this week. There are also drives to collect books for children who lost their homes. Over 14,000 homes in Alabama were destroyed totally, plus thousands of others are severely damaged. It's too soon to know the totals out of Missouri yet, plus there may yet be more victims before the week is out, considering the weather forecast.
Anyway, the students might feel a connection to other boys and girls their age. They could collect books, toys, etc. for them.
Also, many pets were separated from their owners, sadly sometimes when the owners perished. Shelters are filling with recovered animals and are trying to match them to their owners. They can use things like food, blankets, and flea and tick meds.
Look online for disaster assistance groups with specific needs. One today was asking for work gloves and earplugs for people removing debris and using chain saws. Maybe the kids would like to collect work gloves.
Lots of options. Let the kids pick whatever they would like to do.
