Communication in parks

Help.

Last year we used walkie talkies without much success - too much interference and wouldn't work at parks with too many trees. I'm thinking about mobile phones.

Some of us have tri-band phones we use at home, and we must have any number of dis-used dual band phones. I don't think we could buy US pay as you talk sim cards for the dual band ones, but could we use them in our tri-band phones??

My DH and I are on different networks and tho we could both phone home and to the villa last time, we couldn't phone each other

Is there any other way of doing it? Cheaply??!

we were also thinking of buying walkie talkies but renting mobiles might be a better option.

Has anyone else rented mobiles while out there?

We used some Motorola walkie Talkies in Feb last year and thought they were fine. These have 14 channels and 38 sub channels - only once did we find someone else using our channel in the parks - and we had about an 80% success rate in making contact.

We'll be using them again this year for sure.

Which walkie talkies did you use, UKsaint? Where did you get them - and how much were they??

And if you rent mobiles, how do you get them delivered? Don't want to wait in all day!

Edie W - we used Motorola Talkabout T6210 walkie talkies. I got them on eBay prior to our trip for about £40 the pair. They are US models so no problems with interference with US military or emergency services.

Range is stated at 3km and with the buildings etc you can expect that range to be reduced considerably in the parks, but we had no problems making contact most of the time. We'll definitely use them again this year.

We to used walkie talkies last year we brought a pair of motorola t5700's from walmart and found them to be great only ever had someone else on the same freq once and that was soon sorted. Was no problem in the parks and also when we were out shopping. Range is not as good as it claims but it wasnt a problem
