I did a search for this topic but didn't find much that answered all my questions. So, I turn to the trusted readers and posters here. To wit:
1) What are your critiques, good and bad, of the Polynesian Luau?
2) Is it worth the money (2 adults, 1 child)? We're not picky eaters, so is the food decent?
3) Is the Luau Cove open air or covered? Naturally, that makes a difference given the weather.
4) Our DD5 (almost 6 when we travel) is a typical tyke for her age and has no allergies. Will the show be good enough to keep her interest?

Thanks in advance for all the replies. :)

The food was okay and the show was great but I think it was overpriced. Of course you have to do it at least once but I don't think I'll do it again. The dining area is covered but there is no a/c, I think I recall ceiling fans.

We did it in 2003. My dd was 9 at the time. It was okay. No one wanted to do it again. We had good seats (up front, with only one table in front of us), we enjoyed the show. The food was mediocre. The area is covered but no a.c...it can get muggy.
We did HDDR in '04, and everyone preferred it. The food wasn't a lot better (in fact, I think my dh preferred the Luau food but is afraid I would make him go back if he admits it), but it is inside and cooler. The show is more entertaining, at least my family felt that way. My dd asked to go back again for her 13th b-day.
I know you didin't ask about HDDR, but it always seems to follow when the Luau gets discussed.

We really liked the luau. We almost didn't try it because it gets generally panned on these boards...but we DID try it and found ourselves really happy that we did (perhaps it was the low expectations?). We all enjoyed the food, and the show is very, very good, but it doesn't get exciting until the end. There's some silly story line going on while dinner is being served (your child could get impatient), but when dinner is over, there are different types of dances from all over Polynesia...really cool. I believe the price is fair, considering it is a dinner show. I wouldn't want to pay that price just for the dinner, or just for the show, but you get both!

As far as dinner shows go, however, we all prefer the HDDR. We LOVE that!

BTW, you might have better luck over on the restaurant board.

We went December 2004. We really enjoyed it! Except it was COLD!!! I read alot of negative reviews but we all thought it was fine!!! I have been to luau's in Hawaii as well and I thought the entertainment was comparable. I am beginning to feel it depends on what night you go and who is doing the entertaining because of the wide range of opinions I have seen on these boards.
But...IMHO...it was very enjoyable!

My DH and I were there last April and really enjoyed ourselves. We too were seated close to the front. The sooner you book these shows the closer you get seated to the stage. The beginning of the show is a bit boring, but at one point they get all the children up on stage and sing and dance with them. The kids really seemed to enjoy it. As the show went on it got much more enjoyable esp. the fire dancers! We thought the food was great and took advantage of the all you can drink. ;) So for us it was worth the price. It was a fun night out!
We liked the HDDR better, however. If you haven't tried it yet I would recommend it. I'm sure your daughter will enjoy it much better. :thumbsup2

We also like the luau. I also read here that the show has changed and the story part is gone now.

I would love to hear about the new show.

We thought the food was really good. The story line for the show was kind of weak, but the costumes & dancing were also very good.

We went in August 05 and totally loved it. We thought the food was excellent and felt that the price was fair. We were seated right up front so we had an excellent view. Really enjoyed the food-very yummy!

I am so glad for this thread. We are going to WDW in Sept. and have ressies for the Luau also. I see that someone said that the show has changed a little for the better. I hope we will like it too, our dd will be 7 when we go. :woohoo:
