Come Obsess With Me - Going Home to the Poly, Sept 2010 - UPDATE What I Forgot...

Avocado margarita??? I hadn't heard of that one! I did go to La Cava in March and it is totally fun and has yummy margaritas so definitely go there if you haven't yet.

And yes, you have to visit the French bakery! I go right before Illuminations and get pastries for the next morning (using snack credits if I am on the dining plan). I get them in a box so they don't get tossed around and carefully escort them through the park so that is why I get them right before Illuminations so I don't have to carry them 'just so' for a long time.

If you only tried the Grand Marnier slushy, try the Grey Goose this time. I double fisted it and got one of each so I could truly compare them side by side :lmao: I preferred the Grey Goose but both were great - and fully consumed ;)

Yeah, I have heard from several reports that the avocado margarita is pretty much to die for. I may need to test that assertion. For scientific purposes.

What pastries do you usually get? I love your idea on when to get them - very smart. And the double fisting of the slushies? That, right there, is genius. I'm totally copying off of you now.

The almond pretzels are pretty good! We also like the creme horns there.

Also, you should try the Kaki Gori!!! It's a little stand in Japan and it is so yummy. It's like a sno-cone, but waaaay better.

We love World Showcase. Even though my oldest is 8 and she's done it too many times to count, we still do the small maze in the UK pavillion by the gazebo.

I haven't yet tried a slushy, but since I tried my first Lapu Lapu last time, this may be my slushy trip.

Oooh, Kaki Gori - good one! I've heard nothing but good things about it!

Just added pics of the slushies - they're soooo good!! And this time I have to try the Lapu Lapu - we can trade off!

Between this World Showcase post and these replies, you ladies are killing me! I have a lot of new things to try!
Though I can say that the Kaki Goris are a must-do and a napoleon is my pastry of choice from France.

What is in school bread- I have seen the pictures and from what I've read it sounds yummy, but I have no idea what it is!

I love the Morocco pavilion, too. We found some really neat home decorations in the gift shop there. Also found the Moroccan CMs to be very fun to talk with!

We get a few pastries and share them in the morning. I like (and darned if I can't remember the name of it) the twisty butter croissant pastry with chocolate shavings twisted with it. And we usually get a fruit tart, apple turnover, raspberry schuss, an eclair, maybe more :) It's all good and you can clearly see what you are getting so it's really a pick and choose right when you are there kind of place. Yum! I need to go eat dinner now :lmao:

Hello! Great thread! I can't believe after seeing your posts on the Sept Poly thread I didn't see your PTR until this morning. 23 days and counting for us!!:banana:

I'm loving the pictures and the food ideas from you and other posters. I have added several snacks and drinks to our to-do list - I'm sure I can twist DH's arm to do some drinks around the World ;)

We are staying CL for the first time so looking forward to the lounge. We are going to try some new-to-us things this trip. For example, we have never ridden EE @AK! Also trying different restaurants - Via Napoli, Rose and Crown, Capn Jacks, Nine Dragons.

I have some packing type lists going already. The thing I am toying with now is which camera to bring. We have tons of pics of Disney from prior trips, and the kids won't be with us. So I'm leaning toward the smaller/pocket one. But wondering if I'll be bummed that I don't have the better zoom/higher quality with me...

Ok, back to work for me, more Disney dreaming later... :surfweb:

Need to obsess

The kids are so excited to go to the Poly again. They love the volcano pool and my daughter went on and on how she loves staying at hotels. We used the weekend to get some more stuff including cereal, snacks, toiletries, kids' travel toothbrushes (which they promptly used and couldn't wait for vacation!), pool dive sticks, pool toys, and snorkels (75% off right now!!) And we got some more glow sticks because the 45 I had were not enough for them :lmao: I ordered LED items a while back so we already have those. And I'm sure this trip will be no different than my other trips where the adults are wanted a glow or light up item :thumbsup2 No problem, I got one of each for EVERYONE in our group.

Ok, back to work...:rolleyes1

Hehe, adults are no different than kids in Disney World, that's why I love it so much. :goodvibes I may or may not have spent a ridiculous amount of money at DHS on a light up rose for TheNewMrsB on our honeymoon.

She didn't ask for it either. I'm apparently drawn to shiny and blinking things  and thought it was really cute.

Obsess away!!! I'm so excited for your kids, they must be bursting with excitement by now! :)

I love staying at hotels, too, so your DD and I have something in common. I especially love spreading my things out when I get there, like shower stuff and toiletries. It's really exciting at the beginning of the trip! And I always have to test out the bed (which is sometimes dangerous - we stayed at a Westin last month and they have the "Heavenly Bed" and I pretty much almost passed out immediately upon contact. They're not exaggerating with that name!).

You remind me that I need to get my list of Very Important Things in order. Today I added a new entry: Phone chargers. Very important and very easy to leave at home.

I'm such a slacker, I need to update this some more! I'll try to get one in today or tonight.

Um...yeah...back to work...:rolleyes1

Alright I'm here and all caught up. I literally had to get a snack half way thru after looking at all the pictures.:rotfl: I so wish I could try T.T at Kona this trip but didnt make any ressies :confused3 Are they necessary?

I see you're going in September too! Our anniversary is one day before yours! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!

We usually just walk in for breakfast in September (almost daily), even during free dining. We usually show up around 8-ish, maybe a little earlier. I'm sure TheNewMrsB will correct me if I'm wrong on the timing. But in the last 3 trips for breakfast, lunch and dinner, we've never been turned away and are usually seated within 10 minutes or so.

Be careful at the Polynesian while you're there though. You may not want to leave :goodvibes

Have a great trip!

Has anyone else been following mylittlebuttercup's live postings from WDW & the Poly? We were talking (or maybe drooling ;)) about La Cava's margaritas earlier in this thread and it turns out there is a margarita SAMPLER :woohoo: But mylittlebuttercup said she tried to get it and they don't serve it on weekends. I didn't know this but perhaps others did. Just thought I'd post that so we can all get a sampler on a weekday (it's 5 oclock somewhere!):drinking1

Kona cafe has more walk up openings than many of the restaurants at WDW. With that being said, you may want ADRs if you are going during a busier (like holiday) time. It can't hurt either to check Disney's online reservation system and see if any times or dates are filling up.

DH beat me to the punch on this! And he did bring up something I didn't think of - time of day. But since you're going on the same dates as we are, you should be okay. We usually go between 8 and 8:30ish but walked in at 10:30 after checking in last year, too.

Thanks for coming over and reading!

I did see that and I made a mental note! I'm so there. :)

I have been loving that report!

I have been following and have found a number of delicious coctails from her travels that must be tried  I was just telling DH about the margarita sampler and, not surprisingly, he gave that one a :thumbsup2

From all of us talking about drinks, I'm thinking the Poly is going to be a party from 9/18 to about 9/24!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I saw the margarita sampler, but I'm not sure I'm going to want tequila. I usually do a wine tasting in Germany...have to have my German ice wine fix. And I do really want to try a slushie this time.

I'm tempted to try the Tonga Toast, but I'm just not sure about the whole fried thing. Does it ever taste greasy? We probably won't take the time for a sit down breakfast this trip since it's so stinking short, but I'm thinking about trying it from Captain Cook's.

YAY!! I told DH this is a MUST do for me

I have never had ice wine. In fact I just googled "What is ice wine?" (seriously!) because until reading about it on the boards and seeing it on the WDW menus, I had never heard of it. Now I'm deeply intrigued...and now I'm wanting to go to Germany for a tasting! Oh, the things you learn on the DIS...

It's not greasy at all - from having made it myself at home (or at least, from having attempted to), I can tell you that the oil they use must be much hotter - the hotter it is, the quicker the frying and the less chance for grease to seep in. It's quite crispy on the outside, which is the way fried food *should* be anyway. I definitely did not get the oil hot enough! :sad2:

Okay, so I know I was going to continue posting about Epcot, but all of a sudden I'm thinking about our favorite restaurant in all of WDW:

California Grill.

cali_sign.jpg

The name alone sends shivers up my spine. Oh, the gastronomical memories.

The first time I visited was a few days into our honeymoon.

cali_table.jpg

We were wowed by the attention we received (those little "Just Married" buttons were a real treat - I remember being spotted by a fellow honeymooner in the Poly lounge who, on seeing my button, went running back up to her room because she forgot hers, saying to me "I'm not leaving without it! Those things are like gold!!!"). We were wowed by the service. We were wowed by the view.

I was wowed out of my ankle socks by the food.

The flatbread was to DIE for. The Rainbow Roll was out of this world, I had never had such fresh sushi before.

cali_rainbow.jpg

But nothing touched the revelatory experience thereafter known to me as the Shrimp Tempura Roll .

cali_tempura.jpg

It was part of the combo platter and...well...I sorta made a bit of a fool of myself while trying a piece. Like, eyes closed, hands gripping the tablecloth, feet kicking foolishness. :worship: I was discreet, though. But you don't even understand - it was as if a whole new world had been opened before me. I have been in love with it ever since. Meanwhile, DH tried the Spicy Kazan and almost cried, it was so good.

kazaan.jpg

He discovered Blue Moon beer that night.

cali_bluemoon.jpg

And we have a picture of him cutting his filet with a butter knife, if that tells you anything.

filet_knife.jpg

It was a special night for both of us.

Last year we went on our 1st anniversary since, for us, this was the most special restaurant we'd be visiting.

cali_anidessert.jpg

We knew what we were in for and weren't disappointed - in fact, I think I enjoyed myself even more (and this time we both went for the Spicy Kazan - no sharing at our table!). DH had a scallop dish which I keep praying they'll put back on the menu for our trip...of course I'm sure it won't happen. But it was so good - seared scallops, homemade gnocchi and pears in a bacon emulsion. I do wish they'd magically put it back on the menu for our return trip! (Keep dreaming, I know...)

cali_scallops.jpg

It was a magical, 2 hour long meal and it was perfection. Right down to the after-dinner cocktails as the sun set over the MK...:cloud9:

cali_cocktails.jpg

Of course, I was so stinking full afterwards that I thought I would explode. I still managed to shove a forkful or two of wedding cake into my mouth as we watched Wishes, just for the sake of tradition - as well as for the sake of the fact that I went through so much personal drama getting a few pieces there!
That's an ugly, stilly story for another time...

Needless to say, we're returning for our 2nd anniversary in just a few short weeks. I can almost taste that sushi now...Yoshie had better prepare herself for my visit! Maybe I should call and warn her in advance...? :rotfl:
