Come Obsess With Me - Going Home to the Poly, Sept 2010 - UPDATE What I Forgot...

I feel the same way about AKL. It's a cool park and it has a couple really cool attractions (Lion King show, Jungle Trek, Safari) but just not enough to keep me really interested and I skip the park every other trip I take to WDW. It's also the least a/c park (hottest!) which drains me since I go during warmer months. And I KNOW it isn't a zoo but I have a zoo membership at home and we go all the time with the kids so I like to do something I can't do at home. I prefer MK and Epcot :)

Ahhh! Everyone is just getting me so excited for our next trip!

I really enjoy AK but I do find that people stand around there a lot. That gets frustrating in the heat. I love the authentic look and feel of the different areas and really like the rapids ride.

When I think about it, that IS usually the park we only go to once and don't actually stay there too long.

I guess we've been overlooking the Poly. My Mom always wanted to stay there but we never got the chance. Maybe we'll have to stay there on our next trip now. (gonna go check out some more pictures!)

Poly stalker alert!

:lmao::lmao:

Just kidding! I saw the link to your PTR in your sig and I thought I'd come check it out.

Great start and you are making me even more antsy to get my trip going. This will be our first stay at Poly even though we've eaten there many times. It's also our first trip CL! Yay for finally wearing DH down! Heehee

I have been on the fence with excitement for this trip because we just did a big 10-day AKL trip in May with our newest DD and had a blast and we actually said that we probably wouldn't be going back to WDW until 2012. Well, then my lovely MIL called and said "I'm thinking about taking Grandma to WDW for her 80th birthday. Would you guys be able to come down and meet us?"

How do you say no to your mother-in-law AND grandma?!?!?! And since Grandma will need to use an ECV, where better to stay than Poly?

You're too funny! Stalker! :rotfl:

I think you'll really appreciate CL. It's the little things, like knowing that there are snacks and drinks in the lounge during the day if you need them, and being able to watch the fireworks from the lounge at night. Also, the CM's there are so super sweet - on our first trip DH asked a certain fella about the music they played (RIP old music) and if there was anywhere he could find it. A day or two later, that CM saw DH walking around the building and gave him a printout with information. I mean, it's just that attitude of "whatever it takes" that means so much.

We also tend to tell ourselves that our next trip won't be for quite some time...it never works out that way! ;)

I was sad to see Small World closed for our trip, too. It's one of those 'Disney Experience' rides for me, that really makes me feel like I'm at WDW.

We're not huge Animal Kingdom people, either. Well, it's mostly the safari that we're not into. I like the other rides and the atmosphere at that park. But I get where you're coming from.

Next year I am definitely planning our trip for a little later in Sept. That way we'll get to expereince the 'halloweenyness'!

Editing to add: Happy Birthday tomorrow!!! Hope you have a great day!

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

Yes, you're absolutely right, IASW is definitely part of the experience. I'll have to settle for watching the video DH took for me while we were on the ride last year!

Seriously, it's like the pump heat into that place. It was definitely the most uncomfortable of all the parks on our first trip. You can see the discoloration on our shirts from the sweat in pictures - ICK!

Oh, trust me, we've had the "We're not going to Disney next year" discussion many times and where do we always end up going next year? Disney!

We did take last year off because I had DD #2 at the end of April and took off most of the summer from work. I was not about to take a newborn to Disney in the middle of summer and I couldn't really ask for any extra time off when I got back to work.

We'll see what happens next year. I've already told DH that we can go on a cruise for his MBA graduation gift, but that can always change. :lmao:

Or, maybe I can talk him into a Disney cruise......

Ooooh, the dessert party, how yummy! I've heard a lot about the dessert party - I just love these boards, don't you? I had never heard it of before coming here - and have been thinking on and off about giving it a shot. But I figure that DH and I eat so much junk food in WDW anyway (just keeping it real here) that it would be a waste for our waists.

Like what I did there?

:yay: Excitement!!!!! :yay:

You're definitely well planned-out! Maybe we'll cross paths as you're leaving and we're coming in! :) You can tell us what's been going on in the past week!

Speaking of packing, we were just talking this morning about that. I know DH is getting itchy to get started, but it's not an uncontrolable itch. It can be quieted by a little bit of side-eye from yours truly!

In all seriousness, like I told DH this morning, I'm a list maker when it comes to packing. I list out all of the clothes I'd like to take with me, and look to see what I might need or want to purchase. This year I might get more socks - I swear it seems like I buy them prior to every trip! :confused3 Otherwise I think I'm okay. I don't so much use the list for the actual clothes packing because I pretty much have it all in my head by then.

But what list making reeeeeally helps me with is toiletries and incidentals. I like to start my list a couple of weeks out so I can add to it every day, in order to not miss anything I might need. For instance, last year I didn't bring any hair ties. Even though my hair was short at the time, it was just long enough for a short ponytail and it really made all the difference in the world on those humid mornings. Of course now I have a bunch of colorful Mickey head ponytail holders...:)...but not having to search for them in the gift shop on a particularly hot morning would have been nice. Now, as the days pass and I use something that I could possibly use on the trip, I'll jot it down on my list.

Your DH and you sound like the mirror to my DW and me. She is the one with the long history, and I am the convert. While not perfect, The Poly is my favorite place. At the end of an exciting day, it is hard to beat a relaxing nighttime dip in the Nanea volcano pool, while watching the castle change colors.

Having just returned from a once-in-a-lifetime trip, I am enjoying your PTR as a virtual bounce-back to enjoy The Poly once again.

Enjoy! (...and keep writing!)

I'm actually a little nervous about the Poly. Read a few bad reviews lately :(

We just came back from a trip where the resort was at full capacity, and it still was heaven. Keep in mind that while I love The Poly, I am not blind to places that I feel they could improve.

The only "less than perfect" experiences were a breakdown of the monorail (and the lack of info for replacing bus transport), and our one trip to the Quiet pool was bad (too hot, too crowded, and loaded with dead bugs). But, having said that, the trip was fabulous. CMs were polite and helpful and food was delicious.

It is a magical place.

I love lists too for packing and prepping things in advance. Although sometimes it is fun to 'forget' something and just HAVE to buy it at WDW

I keep thinking of toiletries and incidentals that we "might" need on our trip. It makes the list a little longer, but it also gives me a chance to go shopping for our Disney trip more often.

I'm having a really hard time with what we are going to wear this trip. Before our last trip, we did a huge shopping spree for clothes for all of us. Okay, so that was in May. Now, just a couple of months later, I want to do it all over again.

:lmao::lmao:

I've already got pictures of us wearing those clothes at WDW.

Here I am, ready to give you yet another look inside my Disney-deranged psyche. :)

I'm gonna tell you a story but I need you to do something for me first, if you'd be so kind, for your maximum reading pleasure. Please go to YouTube and look up the song "Stranger On the Shore". Please allow it to play as you read this. I'll wait til you come back, and dance to pass the time.

:dance3::dance3::dance3::dance3::dance3::dance3:

Back? Okay.

Last year, DH and I were crossing over the bridge which connects the UK and France pavilions. It was early evening, and the already cloudy sky was beginning to darken. We were probably on a mission to see what the fuss over the Grand Marnier slushie is all about ;)

slushies.jpg

But as is so often the case with us, we weren't in any hurry, just walking slowly together, taking a good look around us, trying to soak it all in, occasionally stopping to take a picture of some little detail we loved. The Faux Eiffel Tower was in the distance and I was holding hands with DH and gazing out over the water towards the other pavilions. "Stranger on the Shore" was drifting softly through the air.

Does it get any better than that? I really don't think so. I don't even think the miraculous and inexplicable appearance of Tonga Toast could have made that scenario any better.

World Showcase is something I'm totally psyched about, as I am every time we visit. I think it's fascinating, the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into each display.

I mean, I'm in love with the entire Morroccan pavilion. I managed to get some really great shots of it on our honeymoon, when we explored on our last day. The detail is exquisite, isn't it? All that tile work!

We explored a bit in the UK last year, and I loved the beautiful English gardens. We also managed to catch a bit of a performance by "The Beatles" ;) on our honeymoon, and that was a lot of fun to watch (even if people were being snippy with each other about not being able to see).

invasion.jpg

This year, I'd love to spend more time in France (possibly at the Boulangerie Patisserie? hmmm...) and Italy (um, the perfume store? Yeah, if I win the lottery...) and Mexico (perhaps whilst sipping a margarita? One never knows...!:drinking1)

One thing we can never visit WDW without seeing twice is Illuminations. I remember the first time I saw it - it was the first night of our honeymoon and we'd just had a terrific meal at Yachstman's Steakhouse. Then we took the boat to Epcot and quickly made tracks for Italy, where DH assured me we'd have the best spot. It was amazing, to say the least! However, he later read that Illuminations was designed to play to the entrance of the World Showcase - in other words, we were watching from the back this whole time! So last year we staked out a spot near the entrance, right by the railing.

 And can we say OH MY GOD??? It was like a totally different show! Seeing was believing, for sure! It was like everything was coming directly at us. I can't describe it any better - you need to see for yourself, if you haven't already!

illuminations_front1.jpg

illuminations_front2.jpg

Another, not so fond, memory: We must have held that Illuminations spot for at least an hour, probably closer to an hour and a half. We spent the entire time sitting on the ground, alongside a family with young children who ate chicken nuggets and played games as they waited. Not to mention everyone else who had staked out a spot nearby. After much waiting and, let's face it, after my butt had thoroughly fallen asleep, it was just about time for the show to start. Immediately, DH and I stood up, as did the family next to us and everyone else seated by the railing. Then....BOOM! Showtime!

Suddenly I hear a voice behind me, directed at all of us in general: "Can you tell me why you chose NOW to stand up?". Turns out it was a person seated a short distance behind us...a person who had sat on a bench for the entire time we waited on the ground. I was actually a bit confused by this question, to be honest with you, and the mom next to me was clearly irritated (plus, it was distracting!). Finally I said, "We're standing so we can see the show" and turned back to the action. I mean, heaven forbid you should not be able to sit comfortably through the entire wait AND the show itself! Sheesh!

Anyway, as I said, I'm really looking forward to visiting WS in a few weeks!

I would like to:

Pick a pearl in Japan

Try the avocado margarita in Mexico

Visit the Boulangerie Patisserie - I always say I want to but never do!

Take millions more pictures of every nook and cranny!

I've had schoolbread - maybe an almond pretzel is in order this time?

school_bread.jpg

Why am I so food-fixated?

Any suggestions on other discoveries we can make there?

Next: Other stuff in Epcot! :)

Thanks for reading!!!!

I can imagine that your DW is happy that you like WDW - I know it made DH's life that I was "bitten by the bug"!

I agree, the Poly has its imperfections. But when we had a choice last year, although I was (and still sort of am) jonesing to stay @ Grand Floridian, I realized that my heart belongs to the Poly.

Is it weird to say that I sit and think all the time about watching the castle change colors from our room? There's just nothing like it. We only did nighttime swimming for the first time on our last trip, and it was great! Well, except for the young couple in the waterfall area who were less-than-thrilled over our presence! I've never felt like such a killjoy in my life!

Avocado margarita??? I hadn't heard of that one! I did go to La Cava in March and it is totally fun and has yummy margaritas so definitely go there if you haven't yet.

And yes, you have to visit the French bakery! I go right before Illuminations and get pastries for the next morning (using snack credits if I am on the dining plan). I get them in a box so they don't get tossed around and carefully escort them through the park so that is why I get them right before Illuminations so I don't have to carry them 'just so' for a long time.

If you only tried the Grand Marnier slushy, try the Grey Goose this time. I double fisted it and got one of each so I could truly compare them side by side :lmao: I preferred the Grey Goose but both were great - and fully consumed ;)
