A lady I work with today, left upset. Her 18yr old daughter called her crying, saying they got the results of her pap back and wanted her to come into the office..... So, of course she is worried and I haven't heard from her...

I know in my experience, you usually just get a letter in the mail saying 'results are normal'...

Is it possible it's nothing?? I'm worried for her.... I hear horror stories about them calling you in for results....

Experiences?

It depends on the office. My dermatologist has a policy where no results are given over the phone, all results, you must come back to the office. It's annoying, but they do it to avoid privacy issues, and also this way, if they say you have to come in, people don't know automatically it's bad news, since that's the standard procedure. So it could just be the policy of the doctor's office, that all results must be given in person.

Lots of minor abnormalities can show up as a result of these types of screenings and of course they would want to discuss in personfor privacy issues.

From my own personal experience, it's much worse to get the call and be told that you are being referred to a surgeon.

It could just be HPV which usually clears up on its own in a few weeks. I'd say there's nothing to worry about until they tell you that there is something to worry about.

I do know she has had the round of Gardisil shots...

Anyways... I hope I hear from her this evening....

Well, when I had my first pap done at the student health clinic in college, I got a little folded up card back with "abnormal results" checked off! :scared1: Had to have something called a LEEP procedure to get rid of some funky cells and go back every 3 months for a while. A call to come in for that kind of news would have been nice.

When my pap came back abnormal the Dr. forgot to call and let me know. About a month later I was standing in line at the bank when the Dr's receptionist came in to cash a check and while in casual conversation with her she asked if I had a chance to meet with the surgeon yet. I asked "What surgeon?". She gets a look of horror on her face and asked if the Dr. had called me yet about my test results. I said no. Then she told me I should call him ASAP and ask about the results. Yeesh!!!!!

It could just be "ASCUS" which is "Abnormal Squamous Cells of Unknown Signifigance" Which basically means- you're having another pap because this one was off. It happened to me once and the following pap (and every one since) have been fine. That was 5 years ago.

That what I was comming post. This is very common. Could just mean the slide was done a little bit wrong even, and is often due to a minor infection which clears up in its own--but they do not know without a "redo." I had to go back and have three rechecks (one month later and then quarterly) and when all 3 came back normal that was all (I think this is more rechecking than is normal because I have family hisroty of cervical cancer on both sides). This was 5 years ago. Never any other problems.

I talked to her and her mom last night..

The pap came back abnormal and they did a biopsy yesterday... She said it hurt like heck :guilty:
Anyways... not sure how long it will take to hear something back, but she's a bit scared....so, for those who are so inclined....keep them in your thoughts.

Thanks :grouphug:

yeah, she just turned 18, just graduated high school. Cheerleader, camp counseler, started a new job.
I'm not sure what they are expecting from the biopsy.....I'm clueless (thankfully) about stuff like that...

How long does it usually take to get results? ANyone know?

DD18's BFF had this done a few months ago and also had Gardasil and I had it done about 8 years ago. Both of our biopsies came back negative and both of us were told that false positives on paps come up fairly regularly. I can also tell you that it was so painful I was glad DH was there to drive me home. I could barely walk out of the office and was naseaus (sp?) from the pain. I remember that more than the pain from having my kids!

Here's hoping hers comes up the same!!

I've had a few abnormal paps come back. I have had a biopsy done too and it was like a nasty pinch (in there). I never had to be treated as the funky cells went away on their own and then came back after my last baby was born.
If the biopsy shows that the cells are precancerous the doctor will probably do an in office procedure and freeze them off. I think that is what they do...I never got to that point.
But I tell yah..the first time you get the "abnormal" red stamp on the lab report it freaks you out.

Keep us updated.

Omg, that is just wrong on so many levels. :scared1:

Just updating what I know so far...
They didn't hear anything back last week, so they called the doctor today. After being put on hold (she just wanted to know..are the results back or not?!?!) they asked her to come into the office tomorrow morning at 9am to meet with the doctor.
Her mom (the lady I work with) is obviously upset, but trying to think positive and not think too much about it until they have some news. But, cancer runs in their family, so of course, she was in tears, talking about how much she loves her and wants nothing to be wrong...
Please keep them in your prayers...for all of us who have daughters (children), it could be any one of us.... :grouphug:

Got results today...
she has level/stage 2 dysplasia (pre-cancerous cells)... she has to go back in 3 months to re-biopsy and continue a 3-6 month cycle :(
So, for now, they aren't going to do anything with them... with her being so young, it could be 10 yrs before it turned into cancer, and by then she could have a family and they could just do the hysterectomy...

Anyways...just updating...
