Posting this as it is an unbiased report between whats going on with Disney and Universal and possibly promote change and growth in TWDC and TDO

We made our way up the King's Cross train station and through Platform 9 3/4, boarded the Hogwarts Express, and after a brief yet richly themed experience found our way at Hogsmeade less than four minutes later.

As we were getting off the train, my wife turned to me, offering up four simple words:

"Sell your Disney stock."

Now, she knows that I'm not about to do that. She bought me my very first share of the family entertainment giant in the late 1980s when we started going out. You marry that kind of fiscally fancy whimsy.

She's not the only one realizing that Disney (NYSE: DIS ) seems to be coasting with its theme parks at a time when Comcast's (NASDAQ: CMCSK ) Universal Orlando is raising the bar. This is shaping up to be a big summer for Central Florida, and while Disney's major addition is a tame, sparse, and surprisingly brief mine train coaster, Comcast's Diagon Alley expansion to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter experience is more ambitious than anything that Disney has cooked up in ages.

Universal Orlando's Diagon Alley doesn't officially open at Universal Studios Florida until tomorrow, but park guests have been invited to kick the tires in recent days. I was there on Saturday afternoon, taking in the sense-awakening experience with my wife and youngest son.

It's going to be the big draw to Central Florida in the coming months, even if Disney continues to have the advantage when it comes to turnstile clicks. According to industry group Themed Entertainment Association, Disney continues to watch over the country's six most visited theme parks. Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida command the next two slots, attracting 8.1 million and 7.1 million guests, respectively, last year.

However, that's going to change with this bold expansion. We weren't able to experience the Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts Bank indoor coaster, which has been buggy for the handful of media hands and resort package guests who have been able to go on the reportedly impressive ride. But we were able to explore the shops of Diagon Alley and even take in an early dinner at The Leaky Cauldron between our round-trip experience on the Hogwarts Express, which is the most financially brilliant thing that any theme park operator has ever done.

It's not about the train ride, which in itself is a surprisingly intimate family-friendly winner. Since the journey connects the Potter areas of Universal Orlando's two theme parks, they don't let you board unless you have either the more expensive day ticket that includes admission to both parks or you're fortunate enough to have an annual pass. In a slick move, each station sells the two-part ticket upgrade, and those ticket stations were busy taking money from muggles over the weekend.

Add it all up and the Hogwarts Express experience alone is not only going to make a ton of incremental dough from folks upgrading their tickets, but it's also going to lead to a spike in attendance as visitors take in both parks. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Comcast's two gated attractions in Orlando surpass Disney's less popular stateside parks in attendance within a year or two.

Disney doesn't seem worried. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is commanding long lines since opening in late May, and its latest addition -- a series of temporary shows and attractions themed to the wildly popular Frozen -- is generating decent fan buzz at Disney's Hollywood Studios. However, anyone with an unbiased measuring stick will be able to see that Universal Orlando is the one that shot for the moon this summer. If you don't see it that way, just take in the reports of the insane crowds that will be lining up to get into Universal Studios Florida tomorrow. I'm not letting go of my Disney stock, but the certificates are starting to get a little sweaty.

So nice to see everyone is ready to have this argument.....again. Ok lets go ahead and break everything down NOW before we get carried away.
Universal has indeed been very busy the last few years adding GREAT and AMAZING additions to their parks. But lets not just forget what Universal Orlando was before Comcast stepped in.....crap. Yes Islands of Adventures had a few "decent" areas while others fell flat on their face. The point of views in the entire park are so screwed up it isn't even funny. Even today the Forbidden Journey building is seen from many areas of the park with no effort to even cover or paint the building. And before you point out Sorian at Epcot at least they PAINTED the building a blue color that matches the sky. Also when you sit on the other side of the lagoon your back is turned while in the countries so you never turn to see the building. Anyway the Marvel area has fun rides with Spider Man being one of the best rides EVER built in a theme park. Yep I admit that. Yet the area is made up of flat card board cut outs. No I don't feel like I am in a comic book and Disney hasn't came that low. Hulk is a bare steel coaster visible from both theme parks and in no ways has a theme. Most of the queue is plain switchback chain queue with a tacky lab inside. Dr. Doom is the same way. Toon Lagoon is something I don't even have to start on. The flume is the worst flume ever with show scenes few and far between. Popeye is a decent rapids ride yet doesn't have a good story at all. Jurassic Park well ok this area is ok. The flume ride is pretty good. The problem is they cheaped out and many of the Dinos look fake and some hardly move. So you move past slowly seeing the metal base of this Dino that hardly moves. Yea very classy. The flyers is a cheap ride that seems like it was shoe horned in although I do think the area is very floral and looks beautiful so see they did pretty well. Harry potter. Now here in 2010 over ten years after the park opened they build something right. The Forbidden Journey ride is AMAZING. Hands down one of the best rides out there but then the show building sticks out like I said before. The town is great also. Yet there is one thing that doesn't bug to many people cause they cant seem to stop looking at the castle on the hill. They have two giant steel coasters that they didn't even care to theme well or remove and replace with something better. The smaller one I let go cause those aren't a big deal and they themed it pretty well. Duel and Dragons? Where was the effort? I mean you could have at least painted the thing and made the steel supports look wooden. Yet they don't feel like it but people cant see that. So lets continue shall we. Universal Studio. Replaced Jimmy with Despicable Me. A good switch I would say. The façade outside promises a fun and wacky adventure. The beginning of the queue inside starts well and them wham there is a giant wall missing showing the tacky lab portion. Very classy Universal. So glad you invest SO much into this ride. Was it something new? Well sorta I mean we got a half finished queue and a nice façade with a new ride video! That counts! Oh don't forget the dance party at the end! Man if Disney did this the fire would rage on these boards. Yet it was new so I let it go. Universal then removed a classic attraction and replaced it with Simpsons. The queue was cool and the story seems fun but they didn't even upgrade the film. Its dark and you want to reach to take off your sunglasses only to realize your not wearing them. Once again its a new experience right so it counts and its huge cause Disney doesn't ever add anything new anyway and the retheme is better then Disney ever does. Well ok so they add a parade and a nighttime show. Big things for universal for sure. Very good adds. The parade is moderately popular and draws decent crowds while the nighttime show kept people in the parks. Yet now watch and see how big the crowds are for the show. Not very impressive is it? Well they added Rip Ride Rocket. You mean that coaster that ruins sight lines in both parks and breaks down often with those bumpy and rough cars? Oh yep its something new though so we can complain cause Disney couldn't do that good. The Transformers ride is an AMAZING Ride and Disney doesn't have anything that good. Well you mean they ride they cloned from their sister park? The ride that in no way topped the Spider Man ride that is over ten years older then it is? A ride that is basically giant metal bots from the movie getting in your face? A fun ride for sure...I like it yet lets not forget its cloned and in no way raised the bar. Yet Disney wants to clone the amazing Carsland and everybody raises Hell. Not to mention the building on the outside in no way fits its surrondings....doesn't matter though cause its new and it beats Disney. Now lets move to Diagon Ally. Now I am not going to complain about this land cause there is nothing to complain about....yep nothing. The ride is immersive and is everything a ride should be. It is a beautiful land I could spend all day in. Yet they haven't beat Disney. Sure they've added to City Walk and added a resort...a nice resort I might add....they aren't beating Disney. Disney is a HUGE beast. Cruises, theme parks, time shares, merch, TV shows, Movies, and more. If for one second...ONE SECOND....Universal surpassed any of the Orlando parks....Disney would unleash Hell on them. Disney doesn't act cause they don't feel they need to. Universal is gaining attendance but so are they. They see an increase by doing almost nothing. Yet they wont let their competition get the best of them. If they feel like the parks are a threat they will act....and they will put them in their place. Universal will continue to invest by adding new resorts and rides and possibly a water park making them a very good place to take a vacation. Yet they will never surpass and earn the name Disney has made for themselves. Anyone who thinks that is dreaming. Now I think this is a good report yet at the same time them winning this battle doesn't mean they won the war. In fact the war has just begun....to my second point. Lets stop acting like Universal was not a crappy theme park industry before Comcast. They were. Just like don't forget Disney was the most innovative company before their crappy managers. Disney was the company to open Epcot Center....something no theme park has ever copied. Animal Kingdom which beats Busch Gardens any day as far as detail and beauty and pure detail...not to mention they don't rely on giant steel bare coasters. (Just a broken Yeti...who is reported to be getting some work and is moving his arm) Comcast will not cream Disney.....Disney will not let them. Anyway that is that and my fingers hurt now so im taking a break.

It sounds great, and I hope it pushes disney to do more, but...

When USO creates an attraction where you need to buy the upgrade on the ticket to ride it, and puts sales at each end of the ride, it is "financially brilliant". When disney does it, they are money grubbing suits who care about nothing but the stock price.

When USO builds an attraction which is "buggy" and having trouble getting up and running, it is "reportedly impressive". Disney would have been torn apart for having a their new ride (or magic bands) delayed for opening because of some glitches.

If you want to play in the big leagues......

Yes Disney is lousy and isn't making Billions in each of its businesses. Theme Parks are toast. Attendance isn't up. It's all over but lifting Universal's gloved hand in the air. Yada, yada, yada.

:rolleyes1

Oh, and it's going to be worthless, but out of the kindness of my heart I'll buy that Disney stock if you want to sell it.

Universal is doing what disney did in the late 80s and early 90s expand add expand. Disney really isn't doing nothing. Disney just isn't doing enough for the die hard fans but they are for the average fan which there are a helluva lot more of. The universal vs disney argument is never ending. Universal doing stuff is good for both universal and disney it brings people to the area. It also pushes disney to start brainstorming and doing more. Why do you think the frozen summer live stuff was thrown together? Disney springs is underway, pandora is underway, NFL just finished, rivers of light is coming in 2016, stuff is happening but not like universal and that is all people look at. Star Wars is bound to come in the next 5 years. It's all a matter of time. Shanghai right now is disneys main focus a lot of work is going into that park. Paris is getting new additions, Disneyland 60th is coming up soon, and before you know it WDW 50th will be here we are only 7 years away from that. Disney is bound to do big things for that at least I would hope.

This is the same old thing...

Comcast and Disney are in very different positions/starting points....

Like a bicycle race where the leader goes off with a 10 minute head start...

But...big but...Disney has stayed the course of measured/profit generation Only capital projects as opposed to Comcast's "chaser" approach that has rewarded it's customers on a much higher level.

None of that is an excuse or a justification for this argument...as you well know.

I probably agree with you on most things...but the stock price/corporate revenue excuse is not the killshot...
Come on

I like Disney for a number of reasons. One is that they are Disney and I love the fun and atmosphere. Another is that they are an awesome business that knows how to make money by making me and others happy.

Disney's first and foremost job is to make money. Period. That is why they exist. They are good at it and have lasted, and grown. They make their money by selling a product and brand that is about making people happy. They do this in spades and are doing it today.

But they aren't making everyone happy. That is a given. But they are making millions happy. As long as attendance and profits are on the rise they are doing something right.

Long term is open to debate, but right now, many analysts say buy Disney even though it is up.

And the article does the usual that has been hashed and rehashed here: Comparing Disney and Universal directly when they are apples and oranges. Both in the fruit business, but as you say, at different places. Universal can keep expanding and increasing attendance and it won't impact Disney at all. HP hasn't "hurt" Disney.

I want more stuff and more rides like anyone, but on the business side, Disney is doing exactly what they should be doing. And it is working when you look at Disney worldwide.

We'll, I must say I love this thread. As a big fan of both parks I must say that I believe Disney strategy is never going to let them down. I am going to answer this debate the same way I answer questions from friends on which park to visit? Then I'll explain my answer. When people asked me Disney or Universal? I asked them how tall is their youngest child? If the answer is 48 inches and they have been to Disney in the past and their kids like thrill rides, then Universal all the way but if not then going there will just frustrate them on all the rides they will not be able to ride. Even at 48 inches they will still miss many main attractions. Disney is a well wounded in its height requirements have 40 inches cover a vast amount of rides. Now comes the kicker when theses kids grow up and have little ones of their own, where do you think they will go? That's right Disney is not just a theme park but a family tradition, that is generational. In fact, for most of us diehards it is that emotional bond that drives us there. The thing about Universal is that we keep looking at the new stuff because we visit so often that we can't help but love new things. Everyday thousands of thousands of families experience WDW as a whole new adventure even the classics like Its a Small World to Carousel of Progress enchant old and young alike. I just spent 2 days at Universal and when we left I realized it was the roller coaster that the teens love the most. I asked them if they wanted to come back next year? They said next year they wanted to go to Point Clear Ohio and not Universal. Now go ask any 3-9 year old where they want to go? Competition breeds innovation and excellence that's why this is a win for everyone. Can't wait for Avatar land, Star Wars land and who knows what else. From both company's . But I'll bet that every new batch of new parents aren't thinking about the day they bring their kids to Universal? Just saying

My kids just informed me that it's not Point Clear Ohio but Cedar Point Ohio. Guess I need to go expand my horizon, lol

I can't see how this isn't anything but GOOD news for us Disney folks.

HP is amazing. The new expansion looks to be about a hundred times better. That's AWESOME. It really is something special.

Now, think about how jealous this is making Disney imagineers. And then think about Star Wars.

I cannot WAIT. Gonna be an awesome few years, I hope.

As most remember, Comcast wanted to buy Disney at one point, the same way they bought NBCUniversal. So Comcast was determined to purchase a media conglomerate. I like both Disney and Universal, but realistically Disney is "not going to get creamed" as put.

For one point, look at the amount land Disney still has to build and look at Universal's. Universal's is just about filled in, with only a little space left for maybe another hotel (maybe two) according to looking at google or bing maps, and from what I heard the Royal Pacific Hotel is suppose to expand into the only extra space left on property. So with that being said, Universal can't possibly "cream" Disney.

A second point is that Universal does not own all of the intellectual property for its characters and themes in the parks, while Disney does (except for future "Avatarland", which it could buy one day knowing Disney LOL). Plus since Disney owns the Marvel characters used at Universal, they will continue to get money from usage of their characters. Much like how Microsoft invested in Apple back in the 90's.

So while I know we are all very excited about the Harry Potter expansion (and I'm a big Harry Potter fan!), I just know that the HP expansion is not enough to want to make someone think Disney is getting "creamed". Comcast can only invest so much money into the parks. Sure they are throwing a lot of money at them right now, but that can only last for so long before they cut back on what they are putting in. At some point they have to get their money back from what they invested. So this is really just a huge gamble for them.

I don't think Universal will ever be a real competitor to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. I do believe at some point that Universal and IOA could be a competitor to DHS and AK..

With that being said, with the ticket prices the way they are at Disney, once you've done MK and Epcot, they make it very hard to justify going to IOA or Universal instead of AK and DHS.

Yes Universal has been around for awhile now, but the Disney theme parks have been around for a much longer period. More people have grown up going to to Disney Parks than they have Universal. Many of us go back to Disney parks because of the memories that we had as a child. We want to experience that with our own children.

Do I see in my future a trip to Disney and then going to Universal for a few days? Yes I do.

But do i see a trip to FL to just go to Universal and not Disney? No.

I do see a trip to Disney without Universal.

All that being said, they are making some serious gains.

As a big Disney fan, I'm pretty upset with Disney that they've allowed Universal to "wow" us the way they have. What I see in Universal is what I used to see in Disney. We went to WDW in May, I can say that I was not personally "wowed" by FLE.

I know it's early but that new ride has been broken often according to twitter but also backed up with pictures. It's seems to be a complete cluster inside the parks. That is what happens when your one dimensional. Everyone is there for just one thing and at 136 dollars per person for the day to experience it wow and people give Disney crap for a 99 dollar 1 day ticket. Personally I have never seen 1 second of Harry potter and I don't get it but I know my wife and kid want to go I said sometime around 2018. Hahaha

Yet when Little Mermaid opened at Magic Kingdom with glitches in some of the AA's it was said it would remain forever cause Disney built the ride cheap and didn't take the time to do it right. Im sure the ride will be fixed but yea everyone is coming to try this new ride only to be told they aren't riding.

I mean I am sure the new land is amazing for fans. I went to the old one in 2010 and it was cool but I did not think it was worth a vacation but again I am not a fan. I do think we need to see a major response from Disney avatar land is not the answer and either is new fantasy land is either. I believe it's OK. I am a major Disney fan dvc ect. I want to see some major overhaul of Hollywood studios and some capital spent in Epcot. Let's go disney spend another billion in Florida!!!!!

Yes, the Gringotts ride is having major problems, but Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride was also down for a while yesterday.

This is a very reasonable response from a Disney fan that doesn't care for Universal. It kills me to read people that are happy about how much money Disney Corporate is making and that somehow justifies that a park is better than another, or that one company is out performing another. Its also crazy to read that someone thinks Disney is going to get creamed because of this one land. Theres obviously plenty of business in Central Florida for both Universal and Disney, not to mention SeaWorld and Legoland.

I also hate the attitude that because Disney attendance has grown, this shows things are fine. This is so far from the truth in any line of business, yet people constantly say that. Growth is not ok if it is slower than the growth of your competitor(s). And saying HP won't hurt Disney is either naive or just ignorant. How many people are choosing Universal this summer over Disney? That hurts Disney. How many are choosing Hollywood Studios and Disney because of the the Frozen Summer stuff? That hurts Universal. It doesnt mean its crippling, that one is better than the other, etc, it just means that people are choosing the competitor.

All you really need to ask yourself, is when is the last time Disney opened a ride in Orlando with the fanfare and excitement of HP? Expedition Everest opened 8 years ago. So there will be a minimum of 10 years between big rides. Ridikulus. :)

Its taking everything within me to not properly reply to this post.......everything
