I made my son change from his combat jacket to a sweatshirt the other day as he was heading out the door to school, but afterwards I felt bad and wondered if I was being paranoid. It just made me think that someone would get the wrong idea. It brought to mind kids bringing guns to school.
DS just turned 13 he is in grade 7 in a high school that goes from grade 7 to 12. He owns combats because he is a member of the air cadets and they wear them for activities especially bush weekend camps. They are not uniform, but optional clothing that they can buy at military surplus stores, he also has some of his dads old stuff (DH is ex-military). DS is actually a bit of a goody two shoes/nerd. He is a figure skater, who is in a book club and an art club at school. His only school sports are highjump and badminton. He walks a blind classmate to school everyday. The teachers and principal all like him. Luckily he is well liked by his peers (and well built) or he would probably get beatup regularily. Not the kid of kid that you would expect to make trouble.
Normally he is an Americian Eagle kid, well worn jeans, t-shirt with funny saying on it and a hoodie. Other times he wear cargo pants and one of his air cadets squadrons rugby shirt. I don't have a problem with the rugby shirt or if he wears a combat t-shirt with jeans so why should I question him wearing combat gear? The pants seem alright to me, they don't look that different from baggy cargo parts, but when he had the jacket on it just looked wrong. His are solid green with the Canadian flag on the jacket and probably his name.
Should kids wear combat gear to school in this day and age?

You just described one of my husbands old friends to a T...this same guy is convinced that the government is out to get us and implant chips in our brains so they can watch/control us every minute of the day. He even bought back his Social Security number last year.
