Columbus Distance Classic -- April 14, 2007

I'm not going to be able to make it this year, too close to Minnie for my pocketbook. That's a shame because it was a lot of fun. And a terrific opportunity to spend time with John Bingham! My DS and his frat will probably be working one of the water stations though.

Have fun!

I have not registered yet, but I am planning to do it. This would be my first race with a chip!

Can I ask you a question, how are you training?

I am now trying to decide if I can do the 15K - Minnie Marathon in May :cool1:

Hope to see you there!

Ashley

Obviously, I've missed the discount, but I'm thinking of doing this. It's only a few weeks before the Flying Pig.

ashley -- i'll be following John Bingham's training program from his book Marathoning for Mortals. I need to print it out, I have it in excel if you'd like a copy PM me your regular email address. i haven't yet counted the weeks back, but i'm betting the program starts soon. I usually jump in whereabout the LW is about 5 miles b/c that's a normal saturday walk for me.

I see we are both Ohio Moms :) ! Thanks for the kind offer. I am also following Coach Jenny/John Bingham plan. On the Ohio Distance Classic website there is a link to training programs- walk, run/walk, run, etc with the weeks listed. This Saturday is my 6 mile long run. I am nervous. I did the 5 miles the last 2 weekends. I have been doing a combination of treadmill runs and outdoor runs.

The Distance Classic will be my first big race. I am nervous. I just want to be able to finish it.

I really want to do the Minnie Marathon in May also. Are you going to do the Minnie?

Happy Training
Ashley

oops are we up to 6 miles already?? seriously?? i gotta print that out!

i'm not going to the Minnie, though that would be fun one day! i was fortunate enough to go the 1/2 this past January so that was my solo trip for a while

are you from the columbus area? did you see Andrea Cambern was running and select few get to run a mile with her? wait, you aren't Andrea Cambern are you? no, you are Ashley. ok -- i was like c'mon, what is that about? that is the last person i want to chat it up with, a perky trim perfectly groomed mile-partner?

oops, that was bad, sorry

i'm following the Walk program from the book, wonder if it's different? i'm off to check it out, thanks for the heads up and you will do FINE! it's only one more mile, you will hardly notice it :)

and you will definatley finish!! your penguin medal awaits.....................

Def. not Andrea :) I am sure she looks perfect even while running.

I am not from the Columbus area. I live in SE Ohio, right on the WV border.

Thanks for the encouragement! Good for you doing 5 miles each Saturday. Have you been training outside or inside? I like being outside so much more.

I am hoping to do Minnie as a solo trip, but I am trying to talk my best friend (who lives in Chicago) to come. Once my DH graduates from grad school in August, we would like to train and do the Disney half together sometime.

Good luck this weekend!

i too prefer outdoors but it's just tooo cold right now. i'm fine in the 30s ;) looks like the TM for me saturday a.m. i'll have to make sure i get to the FC early enough that i can ask them to put a decent station on one of the TVs.

have a great LR!

i talked with one of the fitness trainers last night and he agreed to look over the MFM program for me and help me tweak the regular days with intervaling to lose some weight this time around. i would love nothing more than to be at my goal weight for this event

I would love to be at goal by the Minnie, but I do not think I will be able to make it in time. I re-committed to Weight Watcher Meetings on 1-15-07, so far I have lost 11lbs, but I want to lose a total of 30 or 35. I had done weight watchers when I was engaged.

Good luck on your training Saturday. I am hoping I can do my LR Saturday outside.

Have a great night!

Ashley

Ashley -- how did your LR go? too chilly for me outside today, WC are still well below zero here. I had a time deadline which was good b/c it made me go to bed on time, get up on time and hit the FC right away. DH went with me so i was committed! LOL but got the 6 miles done and actually i was pleased with me speed. i maintained a 14:17 pace all the way to mile 5 then actually had grown used to it enough i bumped it up to 4.3 mph which is a 13:57 pace. i would LOVE to main a 14 min mile for this. last year I my pace was around 14:10 and i was thrilled with it. one day I hope to break 3 hours -- not that i get wrapped up in the time b/c when the event is actually here i'm more about having fun! finding someone to walk and talk with. the past two years i completed most of the distance with a new 'friend' and it really is memories i cherish. of course it makes me that crazy lady trying to start up conversations with strangers along the way -- but hey, doesn't John Bingham say that's the fun in it all!

finally got around to ordering new shoes yesterday -- i so need them! i ditched my shoes at WDW after the 1/2 b/c i was soooo mad at them! i had a huge blister and i have never ever blistered. they were spent anyhow.

WW is a great program -- i should change my siggie b/c i did switch to sparkpeople tracking now only b/c i was burned out and bored with the WW plan. i too lost on it; 25 lbs the first go-round back in 2003. alot crept back on though and i have about 12-15 lbs to get to my goal now.

off to shower and enjoy the day! have a great weekend!

Awesome Job on Your Workout OhMom!!:cheer2:  :cheer2:

Thanks for asking about my workout. I did my long run this morning (sat) at about 9 am. Yahoo weather said it was 13 and felt like 3, it is freezing in your part of Oh. I did the whole six miles. It look me 1 hour and 49 seconds. At least I finished it. The whole time I was running I kept thinking of how you said it is "just one more mile". I was so happy when I finished that I was able to do it!

What are you going to do for cross-training this week?

I will prob. walk on the treadmill or maybe do workout tapes.

Happy Training :)
Ashley

:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: i knew you could do it! and you 'weathered' the weather! ok that was cheesy but that is fantastic! i hope you survived ok!! your time is awesome!! it took me 84 mins, so 1 hour 24 mins. so you :rockband:

for my XT this week i've got my one strength-training class on thrusday night (usually Wed but i talked them into moving it to Thurs this week, right now there are only 2 of us coming) so that will be one day and the other I will probably do elliptical and strength training on my own. I will mix up the actual days of the week for the training to suit my schedule if need be. i do that alot  i figure as long as i get the workouts in it doesn't matter if i have to flip-flop a couple. i actually like to do my LW on thursday or friday if I can, when the kids are at school and not take away such a long time on Saturday away. I say this now, but if my neighbor friend will pick back up on doing LW with me, then i'll do them on saturdays. i make it work for me however i can.

i'm babbling, sorry...it's late and my brain is tired!

were you really hungry today? man i was struggling with not munching my afternoon away!

now will you train with Powergel or GU as we get into the longer mileage? i had a powergel at mile 4 today mostly b/c I found them at Odd Lots for a box for $2 so i bought two boxes. usually i have them at 6 miles or above.

enjoy your Sunday off :woohoo:

Your strength training sounds great. I need to do more strength-training. Right now, I do not belong to a gym or the YMCA. I do have have a treadmill at home, which helps me out a lot! So for strength I do tapes or free weights- but I have to get better about it! Too many times, I walk on the treadmill for cross-training.

I also flip-flop my training days around. :cool1:

Have a great week
Ashley

I forgot to add- I was also starving. I too was struggling with snacking. I was just thinking about what I will do for long run snacks. I will have to check out Odd Lots. We love Odd Lots.

I read Kristin Armstrong's Mile Markers Blog on RunnersWorld.Com. In one of her past blogs she mentions she eats PopTars Go-Tarts on long runs sometimes. Last weekend at Odd Lots :rotfl2: , I bought some Go-Tarts to try on long runs. I have not tried them for long runs, when I do I will let you know how they are. They are 3 points.

Do you wear a belt with water? Are there any online running stores you order clothes from? So far my running gear is from Wal-Mart or other workout clothes I have from over the years. I did get fitted for running shoes at a local running store, but have never bought clothes from there.

Thank you for all of your encouragement and advice you have given me! I sincerely appreciate it

Ashley

ashley -- no need to thank me! i'm grateful for our chatter to keep me pumped up for the event and motivated on those long days. I tell you, after we posted and I realized that i really did need to get back on the schedule (calendar-wise) i felt like i was dragging on it too. i think i had a little pity for myself, but i just did this -- and had to work myself out of that b/c i'm committed to April 14! knowing that you were siked up and on schedule, etc and i was there with you really motivated me to just get up and get to the FC saturday and get my mind going in the right direction!

ok that said -- i love odd lots too! :thumbsup2 i have tried eating sport beans on my LW and for some reason the chewing and all just really irritated me! interesting about Go-Tarts though......i'm not sure if the softer food might not irritate me so much. it was cold and i felt like i was chewing frozen sticky lumps.

today i'm going to FC to do my strength training b/c i think i'll be snowed in tomorrow. i'll do my WATP dvd in place of my walk if so. i know it's not the best alternative, but i've done it before. I think it may be more important for me to get in on the weight machines. I do have some hand weights at home too, but i need to buy one more heavier set and haven't done that yet. i am really fortunate that my DH works for a company that has a fitness center for us. It's only $5 a month for me and it's only one year old. In fact, it's a fitness/medical/pharmacy. I work 'per diem' at the medical office as well. I took a tour of the facility and liked it so much that I asked about their contingent staff and eventually was hired as one. it works out nice. there have been days i wished i had my own TM but with our FC less than 10 mins away i just can't justify the cost. i have a 4 mile walking path that is .5 mile from my house so that's my norm once the weather breaks.

now -- no more XT on the TM for you young lady!! you don't want to burn out on the running :thumbsup2

i don't walk with a water belt. not that i wouldn't but i just haven't had too. when i do my LW on my walking path, i just take a couple bottles down and leave them where i know i'll loop past again. Also, another course I take into town than I pass a carry-out and i just stop and buy one. I used to walk with a fannypack when i had a regular CD player, but with my ipod i don't take a fanny pack anymore. I may on race day so i can carry my disposable camera :cool2: cheesy I know but i'm a scrapbooker :lmao:

i have gotten some decent workout clothes at Target. their brand Mossimo or something like that. i wear old clothes too, in fact i have been feeling quite frumpy  but oh well, i'm too cheap i guess. I order my shoes from New Balance webexpress b/c i too have been fitted in the past and i know which 'type' of shoe to buy from previously being fitted. BUT i tell you what, the pair i just wore for the disney 1/2 were not good for me and i had had a HUGE blister on the back/side of my heel. i trashed those shoes and didn't even bring them home i was so mad at them! but i didn't LOVE them when i got them either so i should've known. I know i'm being risky ordering a pair this late to break them in for April, but if i don't LOVE them right away then i'm going back to Fleet Feet or Frontrunner and getting fitted again. i'm not taking any chances. I wear orthotics too. oh -- and be sure you have an AWESOME pair of wicking socks. i'm probably preaching to the choir -- but socks are a BIG deal. i need to get a new pair too, my old pair is just ready to retire :sad2: man i love that pair too

Good Morning OhMom! Your workout center sounds fabulous. That is nice you get to do some medical per diem work also. When my husband graduates from PA school in August, he hopes to do some per diem work.

I love your idea about stashing the water bottles on the path. That is awesome you have a path so close to your house! I run in the downtown of our little city. I am sure I could stash some water bottles in my car or at my dad's office, etc.

Yesterday(Monday) I got up at 5:30 and ran my 3 miles (30 minutes) on the treadmill. Today is a snow day here ( I am a substitute teacher) so I am going to do a workout DVD for cross-training. I will have to do it when my son goes down for a nap. Now if I understand this correctly, we only do 4 miles for long distance this week correctly.

Have a great day in the snow!
Ashley

ashley -- we have been on snowdays since Tuesday too. did you get more rain than snow? i noticed souther ohio was more in the 'green' on the radar. we were in the heavy snow zone and our county is still on a level 2.

yes this week is a recovery week so you are right -- only a 4 miler! that's one thing i like about MFM program is the recovery weeks, keep me sane. enjoy, next week is 7 -- but you can do it! it's only one more mile!

tonight i'm going to my strength training class, normally on Wed, and then i'll walk Fri and Sat on the TM. our FC was actually closed yesterday. i did 30 mins poweryoga even though it was my scheduled day off, the stretching felt good and i'm really trying to lose weight! i do know the rest days are important too --- i'll be sure to take sunday off!

what is a "PA"? sorry i can't pull that abbreviation out of my memory!

i got the idea of stashing water bottles from my cousin and Dad who have both done marathons. they run in the city and stills stash. if i was stashing in a place i thought might be a bit risky that it would be gone, i'd carry a dollar or two with me as a backup. but then again, i'm anal

Hey Ohio ladies - I am from Worthington and found and joined the boards today! My sister and I are both signed up for the Columbus Half and the Minnie :)

We are using the Marathoning for Mortals training too. Used it for last year's race - our very first half marathon and it worked great. I am strictly a walker and I too strike up conversations with total strangers during races :cool1:

Today was supposed to be my 4miler, but I did a 5K "couples" race with my dad in Powell instead. What a hoot - snowing like crazy and I am out there walking with my 73 year old dad who is in hiking boots and carrying his boy scout hiking staff. We finished dead last, but had a great time together. My pace was really his pace - around an 18:30 mile, but hey, it was great to be outside.

Keep posting your progress. Maybe we'll meet at the half!
Kathy

Kathy -- :welcome: to our thread and to the DIS boards!

maybe we talked last year on the course? LOL

i did my 4 miler last week, and ladies i'm really struggling with the "Eat like an Athlete" attitude. this is my focus right now. I did notice too that the 1/2 training schedule I printed from the website for this event varies from the book training schedule. I always cross-trained on Tuesday as well as Friday, and this schedule has only Fri as XT day. i think i'm going to stick with Tues/Fri so i can get 2 strength workouts in. We are cruising in April and i'll be wearing tank tops :cool1:

Kathy -- sometimes the memories are far more valuable than a regular old scheduled workout! ok, ALWAYS they are! what is your pace normally?

i'm going to do my 7 miler Thursday this week. got plans for Saturday. got my new shoes last week and so far so good.
