Does anyone have experience in Disneyland over Columbus Day? We planned our Disneyland trip this year and didn't even think about Columbus Day. Our first day in the park is planned for Oct 14th, which is Columbus Day. I'm sure the crowds will be elevated, but does anyone know by how much? Will it be equivalent of a summer day in DL?

That whole week is fall break here in AZ so I would expect some crowds from that as well.

i was there columbus day weekend last year, which was also the same weekend as gay days, and yeah, it was definitely crowded! not the worst i've ever seen tho. i remember saturday being the worst and sunday & monday not being so bad.

Actually, most of the Arizona schools have their fall breaks the week before, the 7th through 11th. Much of Utah is off the 16-18. We are taking our kids out of school for the other two days of the week and will be there the same days you will.

We went two years ago during Columbus Day week. Monday was the busiest day of the week, but it wasn't very crowded at all. Definitely not like the summer.

We went in 2008, there was one very crowded day (either sunday or monday) but other than that one day it was awesome, we waited for nemo about 40 minutes but most rides were 10 or less! We did tower of terror and stayed on like 3 times lol then they made us get off and walk around (we walked right on two more times) it may be different now though lol

That was definitely not our experience in 2012 or...whatever year I turned 40 and we went for my birthday (the real Columbus day, which that year was on the celebrated day) and they were having the birthday celebration stuff.

We also have experience of two years being there for Memorial Day weekend (my son's birthday for two years in a row every few years).

Combined, we notice that crowds for weekends like that (and while Columbus Day is fairly ignored in many school districts around the country, there are breaks that tend to happen around there, and from what I've noticed CA school districts quite often do things that result in having the long weekend) grow as the week goes on towards the holiday weekend. It peaks on the weekend, and those crowds are still there for the most part Monday morning.

I got to fight my way through the crowds on the Monday holiday last year, when our plan had been to avoid it all, but a musket DS had bought was broken by the time we picked it up from DLH bell services after having the store send it over. It took AGES to get through bag check (and I'm still holding a grudge against the young woman who did the "oh I'm just looking for someone, oh I'm just peering through the crowds, oh I'm totally snaking into line ahead of at least 50 people and I'm just going to sneak through" move) and absolute ages to get to the store (the Pirates League store stashes the seethrough neon green pirate muskets, by the way...they were gone from every other store because PL snags them).

But from my birthday experience and both of DS's Mem Day weekend experiences, the crowds diminish through the day, and the rest of the week lightens as well.

We also went in July twice last year, and crowds were NOTHING compared to what we experienced last year that weekend....

We have been at Disneyland over Columbus Day weekend every year for the last 6 years (it's usually the weekend closest to my daughter's birthday.) We used to say it's great that the kids were born in Oct and Feb - low crowd times at DL! The new "fall breaks" evidently compel every family with school age kids in the USA to visit DL. Our family now considers Columbus Day weekend to feel the most packed of any day of the year - and that is including Christmas time, summer, days when blocked APs are unblocked, etc. This was for 2011 and 2012 - before that it was wonderfully empty!
This year we're having her bday party at home Columbus Day weekend, then going to DL the weekend of the 18th.

we were at CA on Columbus Day Monday last year. it was busy but far from the worst I have seen. other than RSR standby line which got up to 2 hours (we did single rider) everything was manageable.

[snip]

It sounds like you and I share a birthday!

We will be visiting DL for my birthday (and our anniversary and my DH's birthday) this year for the first time in many years. We expect crowds ( and were surprised we were able to book the VGC). We are looking forward to our first Halloween party at DL. -- Suzanne

We are going Columbus day, had no choice because that is the only day my sister can go. That will be our last day in the parks, we have 3 day park hoppers. Just go early and you should be fine, we went last summer and the crowds were not bad at all.

Looks like Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier and Candy Cane Inn are booked for Columbus Day weekend. Does that mean disneyland will be really crowded?

I have found the whole month of October to be busier than the summer months, with Gay Days , people extending their trips for MHP , out of states school kids coming in to enjoy their Fall break in the parks. Sundays are the worst with the SoCal APs not being blocked. The 23rd CHOC Walk also take place on Columbus Day Weekend http://choc.convio.net/site/PageServer?pagename=2013CHOCWalkhome
