Colonial Williamsburg?

Every year we go to Virginia Beach we stop at CW. We are all history fanatics so we love everything about the area. We are headed there in 2 weeks. We are so excited.

Thank you SO much for this post- we are now staying at Powhatan Plantation for the same price we would have been paying at Quality Inn (and that was with DH's government rate). We changed our dates by a few days and got the $66 rate

Now I just need to figure out how to get the best deal on tickets.....

Well, by my calculations (since I have been looking too) the best deal on tickets would be the 7 day/3 attraction (BG, WC and CW) Bounce Pass for 98A/82C and then buy the 4 site value ticket for 7 days of Jamestown/Yorktown/NPS separately, which is 30A/10C. It's cheaper that way than the Williamsburg Flex Pass, but it covers everything.

When visiting any historical site, I believe it is necessary to do a little pre-trip planning and education. Sometimes the whole history timeline is confusing to kids, so an explanation is really necessary. It can be as simple as "Quit bossing us around!" to explain how people felt prior to the Revolution. Visit some websites,get some books out of the library,or rent some age appropriate movies(remember Wishbone) to let your children get an initial feel for the area you will be visiting. Visiting will be much more fun.

an excellent tip from above that states do not buy tickets until you have walked around. When we visited last fall, we were attending a William and Mary football game, so time was limited. We were able to walk the streets and watch a few street demonstrations without purchasing tickets. We couldn't enter the buildings without a pass but the streets are open to the public. They did let my son and I enter the gift shop without a pass. by doing this you will be able to see if your children will interested or not. We went back at night for a Ghost Walk which was fun and not too expensive.

I agree. We are watching the PBS series Liberty's Kids on Netflix and plan on watching the American Girl movie Felicity to get them in the colonial spirit.

The CW site is already listing the summer programming. I figure if we get one art, music, theater ect. . . demonstration in I will have done my job. Depending on interest we can do more, but if not, there is always the hotel pool.

For anyone planning a vacation in CW; my kids go to schools in Williamsburg James City County, and we go back to school on Sept. 5th. York County is usually on the same schedule as us. Hope that helps someone.

This is a great idea! I'll have to check out Liberty's Kids....not familiar with that one.

Has anyone found any good deals on hotels/resorts for August yet? We are looking at the 19th-23rd...
