Colonial Tour Part One: Williamsburg

Mrs. YEKCIM, our daughter, and I just returned from a week in the Colonial area of Virginia and, of course, came back loaded with pictures from each place we visited.

Williamsburg was our first stop and our longest; we spent two full days there. I've just finished editing and uploading some of the keepers from Williamsburg, a few of which follow:

Nice work! I've never visited Williamsburg but plan to do so when our dd's are a little older. Can't wait to see the Biltmore pics. Are you permitted to take photos in the house? We were several there years ago before my photo-junkie days, so I paid no attention to such things.

Nope, no pix inside, but plenty of photo op's outside. I used my three main lenses, 18-135, 70-300VR, and 10-20 Sigma to try to capture the house (castle??) from different perspectives. It's an amazing place and one everyone ought to see at least once. A monument to a man who inherited a fortune, and spent it on himself.

Very nice Ed- I'm looking forward to seeing the Biltmore pics also. I have quite a few 35mm shots from my last trip there probably 15 years ago.

nice job, someday i'll get to williamsburg....

as far as biltmore house,did they let you take them inside? they wouldn't let me take them inside when we went last yr..in fact she stood there till i put my camera away with a crabby look on her face...although i did see some sneaking some with little p&s cameras they kept in their pockets and no one stopped them and i took a bunch outside...just wondering if they just do what they feel like at the time

yeah it must have been a rough life
i like seeing the architecture of places like that but always think about the servants who lived in little 2x4 rooms and worked 12 hr shifts in the basement

A you the civil war buff? Someone must be if you made it to Shiloh since there isn't anything else even remotely nearby, not even a major highway. You have to intend to go to Shiloh in order to wind up at Shiloh. Nice photos of Shiloh and Chickamauga.

Yeah, sorta'. My dad was a huge CW buff for years and family vacations were usually oriented (or at least routed) toward historic sites, primarily CW-related ones. I live in Birmingham, so we are about three hours from Shiloh and a little less from Chickamauga. Shiloh, in particular, is one of my favorite places, period. I've hiked most of the trails in years gone by, most with camera in-hand. I've also done some CW reenacting, but gave it up several years back, for a number of reasons, not the least of which being the physical toll of wearing a wool uniform in the Alabama heat!

And, yes, you are right about Shiloh. It's not on the way to anywhere and you have to wanna go there, to go there (better take your own rations with you, too!).

Beautiful pictures!! I absolutely love Williamsburg. My family went when I was 12. It was the only family trip we ever took. A very dear family friend was offered a job as a blacksmith in Williamsburg. He and my dad did alot of blacksmithing in the '80's. He turned the job down, because he didn't want to leave PA.

Anyway...

Great pictures!! Thank you for sharing and bringing back some memories for me.
