So. I'll be a Junior this coming year (well...tomorrow, officially), and I'm starting to get really serious about college/university selection and preparation. So far I'm considering Carleton College in Minnesota, Kent State University in Ohio, University of Miami in Florida, Dartmouth University in New Hampshire, Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, Universite de Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and Princeton University in New Jersey. I want to Major in French Language and Literature with a Minor/Concentration in either Sociology or Anthropology (maybe both, who knows?).

So, I ask you, if you know or kind-of know what colleges/universities you'd like to apply to, what are they? Where are they? What do you think you'd like to Major in? Minor in?

I'm in the sixth grade. And I get really good grades, I know it's pretty far for me. But I will be applying to go to Harvard Law.

Try Michigan Law. It's on the same level as Harvard, and it's a lot cheaper.

Notre Dame.
Pitt.
International Academy of Design and Technology.
Charleston School of Law.
Orlando Culinary Academy.

You need more than good grades to get into Harvard...

UM is 30,000 plus a year.

I haven't put a lot of thought into colleges, as I'm a sophomore so I still have a year or so to decide, but I'm thinking about University of Wisconsin - Madison (very close to home), University of Illinois - Chicago (my cousin is going there right now and loves it), or NYU.

I still go back and forth on majors, but I'm thinking of majoring in journalism or fashion/interior design and possibly minoring in French. :/

Out of my picks alone here are the estimated annual costs:

Carleton- ~$47,533
Dartmouth- ~$48,599
Kent State- ~$25,174
Princeton- ~$47,975
U of Miami- ~$42,624
Ursinus- ~$45,610

According to the college board website, Harvard is ~$48,415 and the University of Michigan (which I'm assuming you're just reffering to their law school) is ~$42,617 so there isn't that much of a price gap. However, if you're a resident of Michigan, it's only about $21,763.

But they are right, you need much more than just good grades to get into Harvard, they're one of (if not) the pickiest schools in the country, accepting a meager 9% of their applicants. Whereas the University of Michigan accepts, in comparison, a whopping 47%.

Harvard would be lower for me, I live in Massachusetts.

We don't really care about money. I am in a lot of sports, and chorus and stuff like that. My dad says I might get a scholarship.

Harvard doesn't offer an in-state resident discout. You'd be just about the same price as everybody else. If you lived at home and commuted, you would cost roughly $42,411. If you commuted to the campus, but didn't live at home it comes to about $47,793.

Most private universities (Ivy League especially) won't offer in-state discounts. That usually only occurs with a state university.

right! thanks! I didn't know that. but I have many more years till college.

my 7thgrade teacher asked all of us our colleges and i said i have no idea and se said well go to hastra its big on basketball so im guessing hastra

I'm also a junior and I plan to major in education and minor in English. Finding the exact college, or even a possible list, has proven to be a very trying process for me. There are colleges that I think would be a good fit but are states away and, although it probably wouldn't be a big factor for many, being that far away from my family would be detrimental to my sanity. There are schools relatively close to home that I would do well at, but they aren't a stretch. Also, I plan on teaching back home (in the Buffalo area) and it seems asinine to get my degree out of state, just to have to get recertified out of state. But then I get to thinking about college out of state and then getting my master's degree at a local university. All of this is dancing around in my head and really throwing me for a loop. If anyone has any advice for me, I'm more than open to it.

Do you mean Hofstra? HU also has a very good journalism program if that's something that you're at all interested in.

See, that's another problem that I face. I will not allow myself and my mother to go into THAT much debt. ALL of those schools except Kent State, has tuitons above the annual earnings that come into this home. Even with scholarships, that's steap.
