college students and ADD

Have you attended college with this difficulty or put a child thruough. How did you deal with the difficulties?
I have a son who is a college soph in sept. After a rocky year and memories of the same probs in hs I paid for an evaluation where he was diagnosed with ADD. We have a meeting where it's likely meds will be recommended as well as some accomodations. The problem he is an athlete on scholarship with minimum credit requirements. I am considering paying for coaching from a licensed clinical psych. It is very expensive and I am unsure I will get reimbursed. Is this worthwhile?
Is it possible that with the medications he will get enough of an improvement? Any advice. Thanks.

I can't answer for college but DS is 9 with ADHD. He was on honor roll last year. No way he could have done that without medication. He started meds during summer school before first grade. When I picked him up after the first day on meds, I asked how they did. He said, "Good. I wish I could take them everyday!" How is that for insight?!?

I knew some college students at my college who have AD(H)D. Most coleges have disability offices where they can register.
For many, meds do help, so why not start there?

the meds are going to be the starting point. His doctor tells me to expect a huge improvement just with meds. Things will get much easier for him. But, unfortunately this problem has been going on all his life and he will need to re-learn some good behavior patterns, esp. time management skills and organizational skills. That's the reason for considering the coaching. But coaching is 175. per hour and I'm assuming that it's once a week in the beginning. No free consult, in fact the consult is 275.

Do I have to worry about meds. He had depression issues during the school year as well. He will be getting the meds right before school starts. Are there ever negative side effects?
