Do we regress when we start college or something????

I swear that noone at my school knows how to cover their mouths when they cough or what it means to use a tissue if you sneeze.
Bronchitis is running rampant thorugh my school right now...I wonder why....Ive lost count as to how many times I have been coughed on in class.

And now I have bronchitis again adn am on "hospital watch" for the 4th time since october whcih means that if i get any worse, my doctors admit me immediately.

I worked with preschoolers for a year and never got sick with more than a cold.....in teh 7 months ive been here at this school ive been sick more times than I can count.

What happened to what we were taught in preschool and kindergarten about covering you mouth when you cough, using a tissue adn washing your hands?????

I just needed to vent....I'm just tired of getting sick

Oh, tell me about it! I'm a university student and I can't tell you how many times I've been in the computer lab and seen people sneeze/hack/cough on their hands and then go right back to typing...and don't get me started on the "honkers"...ugh!

My girls (in college) take wipes into class with them and wipe everything down -- the desks, the computers, etc. So far, they have stayed well. It's worth trying.

As a recent college student, I can honestly say that I was sick more in college than I ever was in my life.

In my first year I had a kidney infection that made me pass out randomly (couldn't go to class), I had toe surgery, I had Bronchitis, I got a concussion, I got the stomach flu (TWICE IN ONE WEEK!).. I think that's it. Regardless, waaayyy too much.

I started bringing hand sanitizer everywhere with me. I am still shocked at seeing all those kids who would cough, sneeze, etc without covering their mouths. Ugh.

Feel better!

Ya, I've been sick way too much! College has screwed up my body. I think its due to stress, not eating right, not sleeping enough, ect.

There are germs, but I do not believe that is the major contibuter.

I've said that about both my DDs, both in college now. And that includes when they were in day care/nursery school.

I agree with the bolded part. I think college students are just more susceptible to getting sick. I don't think that students were careful all their lives, then suddenly all the health etiquette goes out the window when they enter college.

I am in College , at 48! and I carry hand sanitizer and those pocket wipes...I wipe down every desk before I sit in it and anything I touch!! I am in the lab all the time, so some stuff is a tad hard to do...., but at that point I just do NOT touch anything and wash before leaving lab!!

Lots of people do that at my college too!

Which is why a lot of college kids are so sick these days-they have no natural immunity to anything because they have spent their lives using antibacterial everything.

Sorry, but my daughters are not clean freaks. Wiping down computers used by hundreds of students with alcohol wipes should not be an issue.

I have hand sanitizer with me but I just use it if we are havign food in class (we get food in my cognitive psychology class all the time)

sorry, this is not true! You need to do this! It is the hand soap that has antibacterial stuff in it that is harmful! It leaves a film on your hands which prevents you from being able to deal with microbes! so the hand sanitizers and wipes are fine!

The FDA Finally Reviews the Safety of Antibacterial Soaps

A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel has met to examine the safety and effectiveness of antibacterial soaps.

Could Cause Problems

The American Medical Association (AMA), and a number of scientists, have cast doubts on the use of antibacterial soap. They point out that there is no evidence that these products stop infection any better than regular soap, and they worry that increased use of antibacterial products might lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Alcohol-Based Sanitizers are Safer

Some at the FDA's meeting recommended the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers for this reason, rather than the antibacterial additives triclosan (for liquid soaps) and triclocarban (for hard soaps).

Industry Denies There is a Problem

The AMA's Council on Scientific Affairs suggested in 2002 that consumers stop using antibacterial soaps. Promoters of the soaps say that studies have shown antibacterial soaps cause no increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics, although the studies quoted did say that long-term use of the products could be problematic and should be studied.

And because a lot of these kids are living in dorms. In grade school you go home at night to a clean bathroom (or germs your body is used to), clean sheets, food that was cooked by someone you know.
At college, the bathrooms are full of germs, the food is cooked by total strangers and who knew when you or your roommate last cleaned your room.
Now put stress, lack of sleep and partying on top it and lo and behold - rampant illnesses sweep through campus!!

My DD is in her first year of college and has been sick since November. I think college students are run down and malnourished; hence, all the illnesses that are running rampant.

I recently returned to school this semester after 2 years away and I think I have had the sniffles the entire time. I also had a sinus infection and ear infection as well as the stomach flu this semester.

Absolutely agree with this. My daughter has been sick with one thing or another since she left for college two years ago. Many more times than she ever was in elementary school. When she's away at school, she's under so much stress, she doesn't sleep, and she eats a horrible diet. She comes home on breaks and generally reverses everything and gets better for a little while. But you can't tell her anything because she's in college and apparently that means I know nothing.:rolleyes1 Thankfully, she graduates in December!
