College Spring Break

Sadly….never
My mom is ultra conservative and never ever would allow it. I could have defied her and went anyway, but I didn’t want to upset her, so I didn‘t even entertain the idea about going.

I did the Appalachian Service Project through my school's "alternative spring break" program. My mom had done it in college and her stories were interesting enough that I wanted to, and I did enjoy it. Now it has become a family tradition - DD20 did the same thing on her spring break freshman year.

I went to college in the northeast, and we did spring break in Florida every year. Unfortunately, I was on the rowing team, so the “break” was for intensive training on the water, but we would always get a half day off to go to Busch Gardens!

Yes, back then it was the thing to go to Seaside Heights, NJ for house parties since we were all underage. Spending a week crammed in a house with about 15 other girls, 6 of my group in one bedroom was enough to teach me this was not my thing, all sharing a single bathroom to get ready was a horrendous experience. The house party side of it was, however, a blast so my kids both went to senior week and one did Spring Break in Bahamas, I'm glad they have those experiences and memories. Not everyone who goes to these things is a mess & we had group rules about never separating from the pack, if someone met a person they were into they connect at a later time, zero exceptions or you never came out with us again, no-one left behind and no-one separates from the group, it kept us all safe.

I didn't have enough money to join a few female friends going to Daytona Beach and they came back saying it was absolutely disgusting in all kinds of ways, glad I didn't do that. People I was friends with weren't about hooking up, as a group of girls we were about wine coolers, flirting, dancing and laughing.

No, I always just went home and worked. (I was saving for my first new car, which I bought shortly after graduation). Though I had my share of partying pretty much every weekend. Drinking age was 18 then, so almost all college students were legal.

I picked up more hours and worked through spring break. I wasn't going to waste the time going to some party when I could be making sure I graduated without any debt.

I went to Ft. Lauderdale in 1981, my junior year in college. I think the trip was $129 for the week? We traveled by bus from NY to Florida which was horrible!
BUT I met my future husband that week! Best trip ever!

My kids went to the Hershey motel in seaside memorial days weekends senior year in high school. It was good prep for college spring break.

Did you ever go somewhere during your college spring breaks?

I went twice, freshman and senior years. In 1980 I was in Hollywood, FL for my 19th birthday. We wanted to stay in Ft.Lauderdale (Where The Boys Are) but had trouble finding a vacancy, so one of the gals’ mother or aunt found us a place in nearby Hollywood. Before arriving there we went to the Magic Kingdom for a day.

Senior year 1983 we repeated the Disney for a day first. Epcot had recently opened so we went there. Then we spent the rest of the week in Daytona Beach.

We drove straight thru both times, both going and returning.

It was a blast both times. Lots of fun. Lots of alcohol. Some unseemly activity.

I’m just glad that Girls Gone Wild videos weren’t a thing back then.

Every year got to go home and work all week so that I had spending money for the rest of the semester.
The only year I didn’t do that was during my study abroad semester, and I just stayed in the city where I was studying because I couldn’t afford to go to the beach with the rest of my friends.

In college in the late 70s. No way would my Dad ever permit such a trip. Did not even think to ask of the possibility due to his thoughts on such matters. Many thoughts he had may have seemed old fashioned but he was spot on in raising four kids by himself with the help of my grandparents. My Dad was a great man. Another factor: How could I think of spending money when I could earn money during break. I did not have someone paying my way.

I always had a job in college so no spring breaks for me.

nope- wassn't really a big thing back then but my daughter went to Key West every Spring Break

Spring break didn't exist for us. College wasn't for DH so he went into the service. I went to community college and Spring Break was Easter = 'nuff said. For our kids the best - and only - Spring Break option was WDW. As DVC members we set them and their friends up in a Villa of their choice. Tickets were on them - most didn't bother. Back then 'Downtown' was open til 2AM. No driving needed. Walt took excellent care of my College progeny.

First 3 years, just flew home to IL from NY. Spent time with family and usually had several appointments during that week.

Senior year, 2 friends and I went to London for the week. We had the best time and traveled all over the area and met up with friends in several places during that time.

I typically worked during my college spring breaks. The exception was my senior year when I had my wisdom teeth out.

Oldest DD just finished her junior year. Her freshman year she had just come back from a school sponsored spring break to Mexico when Covid shut everything down. She was to do that trip again last year but it was cancelled due to Covid. This year she and her friends used our DVC and went to Disney.
