College Loans, Fafsa and enrollment questions

e've even found that if you can provide information from a community college about the curriculum for a specific course, some california and out of state colleges will agree to accept the units (or as a pre-req.) when their catelogs say they normaly do not.

This is why students should keep all syllabus materials, including the lists of texts required (not the actual book, the list of assigned books) until they receive their degree. It's not that much to keep (print it out and keep it online, both) and it can save a lot of heartache in the long run, not to mention time and money.

Just FYI, don't put too much stock in all the mail you're getting from Tulane if you haven't officially submitted an application yet. They are well-known for the marketing blitz that they always put on. It's a good school, and they will offer a fair amount of aid if they really want you, but they WILL drown you in junk mail the minute that you express any interest at all; that is just their way.

for CC in california, you use a program called assist.org to check whether or not your classes will satisfy you pre-reqs for your major.

You go onto the website, select your CC and the calfironia 4-year that you wnat to transfer to and choose your major and it will list the classes for the 4 year school on one side and the equivilent classes at your CC (if they have them) on the other side. For the majority of schools and majors these ARE NOT required prior to transfer but they are a good idea to complete.

WHat you do want to complete before transfer is IGETC certification. If it complete IGETC certification it transfers to a UC or CSU school. When you complete that certification, it means that you have completed the equivelency to the GE requirements at teh 4-year school and you do not need to take anymore GE classes when you transfer. It is not required, but highly recommended to complete it.

Mainly, the first 2 years at a CC, if you plan on transfering to a 4 year school in California, you want to focus on IGETC first and major requirements second.

California Community Colleges are amazing. I went to College of the Canyons and it was outstanding. It definitley prepared me for UCI.

Update. I found out from a friend before we went to ASU that they have a lower tuition exchange agreement with western states. This would apply to him if he attended a smaller sattelite campus and did a certain major. We visited and I liked the main campus but not the smaller one. The tuition difference on the full sticker price is about 80k over 4 years. My son said he was fine with the smaller campus even thought I encouraged him that the larger campus was fine and he should go there. We squabbled over that a bit and it took til I got home a few days to let it sink in for me and then I went to work looking into that more. We found out he is .13 gpa away from automatic acceptance into that program I called yesterday to ask about their hearing impaired program and to see if the smaller campus offered sign language as a foreign language. It doesn't but the woman I spoke to got it approved that he could take that at the main campus and had me send the Dr's letter attesting to my sons hearing loss in right away. We now wait to see if a comitee will aprove him for the program which if we pushed it with tax returns and money we are already spending on private school and him qualifying for stafford loans he would not have very much debt coming out of college which would be nice. I was very impressed with ASU and he will be attending their on either campus unless something weird happens. I am waiting to see what campus he is accepted to in order to then make my deposits. But it is nice knowing where he will go instead of waiting to hopefully hear backfrom a few in the spring and having to scramble fast there. ASU is amazing and I think a very underated school.
