If your child is graduating college this year, just curious what you are getting him/her?

I think dh and I are going to pay for health insurance for the next 6 months for ds and what I am looking at is $329 per month and paying his graduation fee of $125. Also maybe getting him 2 concert tickets to his favorite group for the summer.

He has worked really hard and even had like 4 part time jobs in one year plus deans list etc. He doesnt have a full time job lined up yet due to the economy around here, but he is trying.

Just curious as to what everyone else is doing.

I can only answer from the other side of the question but my mom got me an engraved pen/pencil set and took me out to dinner. She doesn't have a lot of money so she got me what she could.

Now that I look back (I graduated last May), I'm not sure if my mom got me anything besides a meal out (with a few family members) and paying for my graduation party. She does fully pay for my education now, and most of my other expenses, so I can't be picky!

My Grandma, who is like my second mom, gave each of us grandchildren a small diamond pendant. I wear it with love every time it's on, knowing that it is a little bit of her in a sense. :cloud9::lovestruc

My daughter is graduating in December and we're going to Walt Disney World!!!:woohoo:

It has been a long hard road and we've all earned this trip!

My DS's school offered a spectacular frame for the diploma. They had several to pick from ranging from $100-$250 ea. It is very ornate and has the school name on it. It can't be missed hanging on the wall because it really stands out. Even though DS graduated in 01 he still says this frame was his favorite graduation gift.

This is what my parents gave me for my graduation, though my mom and I were the only ones who made the trip. Nine days in the World was a great gift. :goodvibes

I didn't graduate on time and took my final classes later after marriage. I don't think my parents gave me anything. My DH's parents gave me a $1000 savings bond.

My husband works with a lot of people freshly out of college and far away from home. As much as someone might want to pay for a trip or some other thing they can keep PLEASE first make sure they are able to get to where their new job is going to be!!

First months rent, deposit, utility deposits, u-haul for getting their belongings to their new city. These things all add up. Even if they get a stipend to cover some of their moving expenses many companies give these in an expense check AFTER they start work. We have had young guys ask how they are supposed to get here.

I also had a friend when I was younger whose parents weren't able to help her. She had to take cash out on all of her credit cards to cover her deposit and first months rent on her apartment in the new city.

DD graduated in Dec with a degree in SpEd. Her dream was always to be a teacher so we got her this necklace from Tiffany & Co. It says "Dream a little dream".

DD is covered by the university health insurance until next month. They suggested looking into a policy with Gradmed.com. From what I can tell, the rates are pretty reasonable.

We also got our sons a beautiful frame that the school offered for the diploma. We had parties for each of them as well. And we also gave them $500.
Congrats to your son, he sounds like a very hard worker! :)

I think those sound like wonderful gifts, luvmarypoppins! Something special to remember and have fun with (the concert tix) and something practical and necessary to help him out with (the insurance)~ sounds very generous and I'm sure he will appreciate it!:)

So pretty!

My mom gave me a graduation party when I graduated. She paid for half my college education. That to me was a wonderful gift. I do, looking back on it, wish she had given me one special thing, something maybe like the necklace that daughtersrus posted about, to have as a concrete token, of "this is what my mom gave me for college graduation". I'm just really sappy sentimental now that my mom is so ill and every little thing I have now I cherish.

DD graduates from college in a little over a week. Until she finds a job, she will be living at home where I pay for all her expenses. As soon as she gets a job, she will begin paying for her own cell phone and car insurance. When she finally finds a job that will allow her to move to her own place, I told her I would buy her a couple of pieces of furniture. That will be her graduation present.

My parents gave me a really nice GPS for graduation. It's kind of an inside joke- but a very useful gift, I use it all the time! I also received a nice wallet full of various gift cards- everything from B&N, Subway, gas cards, Walmart, you name it, I probably got it (my 2 sisters went in on it together) A laptop, Ipod, Kindle (or other e-reader) nice brief case, PDA- would all be nice gifts IMO.

Op, you know you can put him on your insurance now, right?

My 18yo DD hasn't started college yet but she put a request in for Lasik as her college graduation gift. Hopefully her eyes will have settled enough by then.

I'm not the OP but although DD lost her medical coverage with us in Dec when she turned 23yo, the only way to keep her on our plan was to pay COBRA. The cost of that was going to be $849 a month! Even with the new laws, she won't be able to get back on our plan until sometime in 2011.

My ds graduated last year. Money was really tight. I made him a scrapbook, most of the pictures were from school events and his friends. I found a nice poem about a son growing up and added that to the end of the book.

Look into private insurance. I cover my daughter through private insurance with BC/BS and it costs me about $200 a month to cover her.
