College entrance cheating scandal

did the parents ask someone to commit a crime? That is my question. Sounds like a case of entrapment. Was any of this the idea of the parents or did they pay a consultant to help their kid get into college, something that is done at every high schools across the country all the time

Still not seeing the crime for the movie stars here. They paid a consultant. They did not tell the consultant how to do his job. Its a college, they collect money from everyone, every building has a name, every bench, every drinking fountain. It would not be unusual at all to give a school money and expect a favor in return, it is done 1000 times a day

They received different services and different price tags. One produced and supplied photos specifically to perpetuate a fraud. Another may have consulted a specified doctor specifically with the intent of obtaining a fraudulent diagnosis in order to facilitate a special proctor, added test time and test answers to be corrected. They were knowingly part of a criminal conspiracy to commit fraud.

I just can't imagine risking jail time and my reputation, plus spending thousands of dollars, to bribe/cheat my kid's way into college when they don't even want to be there. And here's a tip, if you commit a crime and especially a federal crime, don't put it in an email. They must really think they are untouchable.

I've always wondered why Vanderbilt insists on competing in a major athletic conference. They should consider a lower level conference or Division 2 or even drop football altogether.
.

They're perfectly willing to have 10% their own fans and 90% the visitors and a non competitive football team for the money. They couldn't get nearly that much in TV money anywhere else and the rest of the SEC is perfectly willing to let Vanderbilt be a gimme in 9 out of every 10 years. Their basketball team set a record for futility. Ofer in the SEC and then they lost in the first round of the SEC tourney too. But I think they have a title in womens bowling and baseball. So there's that.

I think you just summed up their defense argument, and CabanaFrau, skilled attorney that she is, shot it down. They were not getting coaching on application essays and advice on which schools to apply to; they were actively engaged in putting big lies in writing (or in images, if you prefer.) There is absolutely NO way that you do not realize that having someone else actually take your child's college entrance examinations isn't allowed; that is made VERY clear on the test applications. When you are asked to write a check for $15K to cover a $58.50 test fee, that's kind of a red flag that what you are doing is not legit.

LL's phones were wiretapped.
This was more than just hiring a consultant, but I've never done that so maybe not. Sure seems off though to confirm that "if anyone ask's- we just made a donation" if they were only hiring a consultant right?

I have not followed it so do not know facts, if the parents knowingly knew it was a fake test that is a case. But for the FBI, seems like a stretch.

They knowingly sent false applications through the mail - that's mail fraud. In some cases, they made the payments to a phony charitable organization and wrote it off on their taxes - that's tax fraud. I'm not a legal expert, but those are both federal crimes, I believe. And this wasn't specific to one particular state, so the FBI was involved.

That they do..............
I have no sympathy for people who use their wealth to cheat the system thus driving up the costs to potential students who have the brains but not the money.
My Daughter turned down an invitation to attend a prestigious Eastern University because, even with the scholarships that she had accumulated, we could not afford to send her there.

My Daughter turned down an invitation to attend a prestigious Eastern University because, even with the scholarships that she had accumulated, we could not afford to send her there.

The flip side of that is that many of the top university endowment funds make it possible for a number of students who otherwise can't afford to attend be able to go. And I'm sure some of these endowments were little more than legal bribes for legacy children to attend those schools.

I liked her in the Garage Sale Mystery movies and When Calls the Heart and to an extent her Christmas movies :(

I wonder if they will still release any of the movies already made? I believe they've been 3 or 4 Garage Sale Mystery movies in August for the last year or two. The story I read said they stopped development of all productions related to her I just wonder if that means they'll pull content already made? I'm not sure if they would pull When Calls the Heart which is actively airing at the moment though...I hope not.

Gah seriously disappointing to find out she was involved. The act isn't shocking nor surprising though.

I said I wasn't sure that her fans would care, not that the Hallmark Channel wouldn't care. They like to market to "Christian viewers", so I agree that getting charged with a crime involving moral turpitude would definitely be something that would set off PR alarm bells for them.

Hallmark has zero choice in the matter if the claims were substantiated which is turns out..yes yes they are. Their image is wholesome. What she did was not wholesome. Now they may not truly from the bottom of their hearts necessarily care--she got viewership through her roles but she is replaceable as are all the Hallmark channel stars really..doesn't mean that people who liked them in their roles (which just like another person who lost her show it wasn't lori that I cared about it was that I enjoyed her movies and tv show) won't still miss them when they are gone.

So I now see they are pulling this weekend's episode of When Calls the Heart so that answers my earlier question.

Mackenzie, you & I have had this conversation before in other threads. I too, like all the Hallmark movies. I like having fluffy, light, happy ending movies :cloud9: on my TV in the background. Or to watch one when I get shell-shocked of seeing people blasted away by all the faux & real violence on TV and in the news.

I never watched "When Calls the Heart," as something about that show, the era it's set in, maybe the faux costumes, put me of of it. But, I did watch all her Christmas movies & "Garage Sale Mysteries." I agree any other decent actress can replace her. But, part of watching the actresses that Hallmark casts, is that they are so likable and we want to see them again in more movies.

Hallmark movies aren't just about being wholesome. And while, I'd say 1 out of 5 movies have more of a faith-based theme in them, really highlighting the presence of God or some "Touched By An Angel" type "miracle" happening in those movies, they didn't push the Christian aspect on us, even though the movies do celebrate Christmas. Hallmark is about having strong family values. Those family values do NOT include cheating, bribing and creating phony profiles, pics, test scores & medical reports to get two DDs into college. Hallmark couldn't just ignore what Lori did, even if some fans would have still watched her. What kind of message would that send to about Hallmark's own beliefs & values? :sad2:

From what I heard, Lori was in the middle of filming the next installment of "Garage Sale Mysteries." I'd love to know what she said to the producers, to stop filming and say that she had to go home. Did she explain it at all? Did she simply say she had an emergency? Or did she say she was being arrested and what for and at LEAST apologized for what she knew they'd eventually find out and how it would affect them?

Lori not only tanked her own "Garage Sale" series and future movies. But, she tanked, "When Calls the Heart," in which she was part of an ensemble. Every other star who filmed that series has been affected by her actions as her character was an intrinsic character in that story. :sad2: Season 6 just premiered 3 weeks ago. So they have 7 more episodes that are now in limbo and may be scrapped. Re-shoots and severely altering the storyline of the show may be impossible. :badpc:

Lori, was it all worth it? :sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

I would hope the FBI has bigger fish to fry. These were mostly private universities. They can let in anyone they wish.

Actually, the FBI were working on a totally unrelated case of financial fraud. They hadn't had a clue this was going on. But, as they unraveled the other case, this one unfolded. :magnify:  :faint:

Ugh totally agree. I'm just super disappointed and I feel for all the people involved in the content she was in. Garage Sale Mysteries it was a smaller cast though it still impacted them but When Calls the Heart has a larger cast. All their work *poof* now it's up in the air what they will end up doing with When Calls the Heart. I was just getting over the death of one of the main characters as the actor opted to move on from the show.

Good point about her filming and what excuse she thought to give. Kinda wondering now how that all unfolded.

And yeah really was it alllllll worth it?

Not an attorney. Common sense layperson view of what has been released about the details of the case. Merely took a shot at explaining counterpoints to another poster's comments about not seeing any criminality in their actions.

Criminal law isn't some big mysterious thing that the average person isn't able to understand if they read the statutes.

I just find it interesting and funny how a lot of the worlds biggest crooks, mafia and in this case, get busted and charged of all things mail fraud.
It’s like those laws were created specifically to get the bad guys for bigger things by using mail fraud.

I find it incredibly interesting that so many people discussing the case have pointed out the tax fraud involved, yet as far as I know that's not part of the indictments. Yet.

And apparently in the case of one of them may have seriously derailed her efforts at being another self made billionaire in the footsteps of Kylie Jenner.

And the daughter has lost her deal with Sephora.

And I saw that both daughters won't return to school because they are worried they'll be bullied.

Oh brother. They shouldn't return regardless. They don't belong there.

No, at least the one I saw on Youtube clearly didn't want to.

Olivia was also dropped from Tresemme & Amazon. This is what I don't get. She was clearly already being successful, making money, getting her products out there and being endorsed by big businesses & had an extensive social media following buying her stuff. She also seemed like a flighty airhead, in which "traditional college subjects" weren't going to stick in her brain. And she made it clear she probably wasn't going to attend those classes anyway.

Kylie Jenner, and most of the Kardashians didn't attend any college. (They could all use some education on how to pick a man that won't cheat on them, but that's for a different thread. :p) And they've made multi-millions selling themselves. Kylie actually made her billion by NOT doing a porn tape. :thumbsup2

It was reported some parent who was arrested paid close to $6.5 million to get their child into college. For that amount, they could have used that money to give the child their own business start-up company, and hired the right people to actually work it and make it successful. Why bother with getting them a college degree they really aren't earning and most likely will not even need? :confused3

Well tax evasion gets mob people too. That gets celebrities and even people who win prizes from shows who fail to claim the winnings on their taxes.

Also, Hallmark now can't re-air the previous 5 seasons on Hallmark TV or via their app. It was a fan-favorite show for them. That's a lot of revenue for Hallmark to lose. :headache:

The only thing I can figure is the parents may have faced some pushback in social settings over the years because, despite having substantial wealth, in certain social settings that didn't command the respect of others of equal or greater means and they felt it partially boiled down to not having college degrees. It seems their daughters were routinely rubbing shoulders with the children of non celebrity wealth and privilege. I have a hunch mom and dad were keenly aware of being hangers on in certain social settings where it takes intellect to participate and they thought that the girls wouldn't have to face that with college degrees, even if it only went as deep as a label. How sad they didn't simply take advantage of the tremendous opportunities offered in their high school years at an exclusive private high school.
