College entrance cheating scandal

It makes me kind of sad for the kids involved. Were they raised with any sense of personal integrity? Did they know what their parents were doing? Will the schools put them out? Who would want them now...schools or future employers?

It's shocking but not surprising.

One final WTH...Just how average are Laughlin's kids that it took $500.000 to get them unto USC?

LOL. From the BBC on Loughlin's kid:

"I don't know how much of [university] I'm gonna attend," the teenager - who goes by the name Olivia Jade online - told her viewers in a video.

"But I'm gonna go in and talk to my deans and everyone, and hope that I can try and balance it all.

"But I do want the experience of like game days, partying… I don't really care about [university], as you guys all know."

:sad2: 'balance it all'? I guess it was tough trying to work around her perpetual spring break.

If I had to guess, the parents will be held accountable by paying a small fine. And since they have the money, it’s not a punishment that’s really going to hurt them. Their kids will remain in their respective schools and it will all blow over and be forgotten.
The actual charges aren't because of the crime, but the means of communicating it: mail and wire fraud are federal crimes.
Wow! So sad then that adults/parents made such poor unethical choices and now their children will pay some price. Even if it's just an asterisk by their degree.
why an asterisk? Anybody who graduates from a university did the work to earn the degree.

I actually know two people myself who attended a major state university online and obtained Bachelors degrees but paid other people to do the work for them. It can be done.

Okay, you know a different type of person tban I do.

Even given that, the actual criminal charges here are against the parents, and are specifically "felony conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud". It's been stated in this thread that the students had no knowledge of the events.

I also read that some of the kids weren’t even aware of any of this. Can you imagine thinking you were accepted on your own merit and then finding out it was because your parents cheated and lied. Pathetic all around.

The fact that I know them doesn't mean they're friends. Let's just say my old job caused me to be privy to these things due to their other actions. Just wanted to point out that it can be done. Not condoning or supporting it, just throwing out relevant info.

The REAL target of the investigation was not the parents, who were the clients, as much it was the operator of Key Worldwide Foundation, who provided the services they were buying. I doubt that most of the parents will see a single day of jail time other than today, unless it can be proven that they were actively participating in finding other clients for this "nonprofit" company.

I want to see Felicity's and Lori's mugshots.

I suppose their next project is Orange is the New Black.

Or maybe a remake of Women in Chains.

ABC evening news just showed a video clip of that daughter. She even looks like the typical total airhead bimbo.

Imho...It IS a different Overall education experience. The Professors, lecturers, the Caliber of the education is different.

Ever hear students tell u that their professor does not even have Command of the English language? Unable to actually “teach” and has their students read to learn on their own the entire semester?
Not an an Ivy.
Or professors that use their Own publications to “allegedly” teach .. students basically forced to buy their book/s yet never open it for class? Cha Ching, Sale made. Not seeing that at an Ivy. Their books are actually worthy.
Plus....

Sorry. Have to disagree on this one. I have multiple friends that teach at one specific Ivy and several friends who graduated from others. Questionably qualified grad students teaching undergrad courses, professors using their own books....they all have stories. This happens at Ivies, too. The factory of academia is powered by the cheap/free labor of grad students and adjunct faculty, and full professors who are full of themselves are everywhere, not just at "lesser" schools. "Anyone who says otherwise is selling something".

Tulane's acceptance rate is less than 25%. I graduated from Tulane with a full scholarship. My parents could not afford to give me ANY help at all. I even earned the money to take the SAT and to apply.

I knew a young man from a very prominent New Orleans family who did not get in. A zillion of his relatives from great grands to parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. were Tulane grads.

It's always easier if you can pay out of pocket. I also got accepted to Vanderbilt - but I did not get a scholarship so I could not go there. I always say the hardest thing about getting my degree was paying for it. I graduated in 3 years (taking 21 hours sometimes) so I could go to work earlier and to borrow less money.

Thank goodness I ended up in New Orleans. Nashville vs New Orleans? So glad I am in New Orleans.

LSU has engineering programs that are not offered at Tulane. There are culinary programs at other colleges that are first rate. There's no one answer for everyone. I loved having classes that were usually less than 25 people. In my major many of my classes had 5 people.
I guess that’s what I’m thinking of for undergrad programs is engineering. Most of my family & friends are engineers. At least some of Tulane’s grad programs seem to be if you can pay you can go namely school social work & MBA program. I am a social worker & since I live here I work with a lot of social workers who have attended Tulane. Often it’s appalling that these ppl even get into to the program must less graduate

Sadly, I'm not ridiculously shocked by this. I know more than one student who has made it into one of the little Ivies through some sketchy back door stuff courtesy of their parent$. Not surprisingly, none of the students I'm aware of have gone on to be successful at that school. When the college says they're not qualified, and their high school says they're not qualified....maybe there's something to the idea that they're....not qualified?

So, Loughlin throws $500,000 at USC for her two daughters. But, isn't $500,000 way more than 2 college educations would have cost her? I don't understand the rationale here.

So disappointing. And, yes, a college education is a college education. You pay more for the name..

I think I read Loughlin paid $500,000 for EACH of her daughters.

I am absolutely disgusted by this, and the weird thing is that I'm not even exactly sure why. It seems so underhanded. Maybe it's because my dd is about to start applying to colleges and these people literally stole a college education from another deserving child who worked their *ss off for years and their mommy just bought their way in.
