Both my kids and husband came down with colds. Nasal congestion and runny noses, but fine otherwise. Already had flu shots. We leave in 2 weeks, and I'm worrying (probably unnecessarily) that this is going to linger, and how we'd handle flying. I'll take the kids to the doc this week if it doesn't seem like things are improving, but does anyone know if those earplanes work?

I've flown a couple of times with colds and even a couple of times with ear infections (don't recommend that one). I just took an over the counter cold med and slept most of the trip. If it's two weeks from now, hopefully they will be better any way.

A could should be gone in two weeks but I would ask the doctor about a decongestant for flight just in case they are not well. Ear congestion mostly does not need an antibiotic, but can be a problem with flying. Maybe also ask about antibiotic ear drops in case the ear congestion does become more of an issue. Less influence on the body, but can maybe make travel more comfortable. If the kids tend to get secondary infections from colds, seeing the doctor may be a good idea and then in the event they would develop something more on the trip, doc is more likely to call something in for you!

I use earplanes even without head congestion, but they are VERY helpful to equalize the pressure. Highly recommend!

Yes, they work beautifully and come in kid sizes for kids and smaller ears (I use them!). They worked perfectly when I flew with a bad head cold. Agree on a little decongestant and maybe start a nasal spray a few days before like nasacort.
