My son who is 6 has cold weather asthma and it snowed for the first time this season yesterday and he had an asthma attach. had to nebulize him every 4 hours last night.

Well I have a question, since he has cold weather asthma and we live in Rapid City SD. Should we consider moving to a warmer climate???? :confused3

My parents are here acually 80 miles away we see them every couple of months and my husband has his mom and step dad who live part time in Florida and part time in every other parts of the county and he has an aunt, uncle and cousins down in florida.

so we have been tossing up the idea of moving to florida but dont know if that will help him, we are sick of the cold weather, Im studing to be a phlebotomist I will graduate in may and take my certification in June, so im sure finding a job will not be hard.

PLEASE HELP ME

My brother is a pulmonologist (lung doctor). My sister died of a cold-weather induced asthma attack. My brother and I have discussed whether moving away from Chicago would have prevented my sister's death. He thinks not. Over time, the asthmatic body tends to find another trigger when you move.
He thinks that if the drugs that are available today were available then, they would have made a difference.

I'd talk to your doctor and she if he or she has a different opinion. Good luck to you!

I have never heard of cold weather asthma. Cold weather can trigger asthma attacks because of the cooling and drying of the air passages but usually you're an asthmatic and you need to take extra care during the winter.

I have asthma and it was just as bad in FL because of the mold. Usually they recommend dry climates for asthma and allergy sufferers. FL definitely isn't dry

I find fall to be my worst time asthma-wise with the mold and weeds. I am extra careful to take precautions in the cold and seldom have cold weather attacks

Well our middle ds has asthma and when we go to Florida he usually gets asthma attacks from all the humidity in august. This time we switched to an april trip and I dont think he had an attack the whole time we were there. So actually the humidity might trigger something in your ds. We live in the northeast and its cold here. Our ds had to also have a nebulizer treatment the other night. He has a cold and I cant give him anything over the counter. Its really a no win situation for our son, no matter what, but I just keep all his meds ready and available. October here triggers his attacks for some reason. Good luck deciding.

We are in the Dallas area and it is bad for kids with asthma. So much in the air, the heat and ozone are terrible in the summer. It might help but hard to say if there won't be a different trigger where you go.

Our oldest DD also has asthma that worsens in the cold. She also has a hard time in the fall and spring with hayfever. Luckily, hers has been very controlled, and has to use her inhaler only sparingly.

I have always wanted our dr. to prescribe a move to a warmer climate for her breathing. No luck.

Today, picking up DD from school she said it was hard to breathe in the cold- she's 11- so, I think we may have to be starting on her steroids soon. The temp today never got over 4 degrees- windchills 20s below. The joy of Minnesota!

bambii - There are various preventative meds available today. It may be appropriate for your son to go on one of those during the winter months. Singulair and Advair are my two favorites though there are several others. I'd suggest speaking with his doctor. I have several patients who only take those meds during the winter as they don't need them the rest of the year.

I have asthma and it gets worse in the cold air and when I have an allergy attack. Well, I finally saw an allergist and I feel the best I've ever felt. I am on a daily inhaler and Singular and I never need my emergency inhaler anymore. I wouldn't move because of it although that sure is a good excuse to move to Florida!

At least you have clean air in SD. Better than some parts of the country.

herc.

My younger sister has asthma that is made worse by cold weather. The worst was when we had outdoor gym class in elementary school. She said that she would suffer through class every day, gasping for air :( If your son has outdoor gym, you may want to get him medically excused from that. Also, I don't know if this really helps, but my mother used to wrap a muffler around my sister's face whenever she went outside in the cold. I always wondered how she could breathe with the muffler over her nose and mouth, but supposedly it cut down on her asthma symptoms and chronic bronchitis bouts.

and my son is taking advair and singular. Im very serously thinging about a mask for his face. I also need to talk to the teacher the last two days he got off the bus and his jacket has not been zip up it has been in the single digits.. and his teacher has been told and see agreed. so i have to remind her..

South dakota has clean air but rapid city is surronded by hills and we get bad air conditions so people that has beathing problems should not go out side and no one should use a wood buring stove or a fire place

I hope your son is okay. We have the same thing with Matt. It is horrible from the first cold day until spring.

We went today for his 5 year check up. He just started last weekend using the inhaler since my DH forgot his nebulizer at his school for the weekend  I could not believe how instantly he stopped his coughing. So today, the Dr told us to use Flovent 1 puff in the am and 1 before bed and then gave us a prescription for Albeuterol for the in between as needed.

Its going to be a looooong season.

My DD has (from about age 11 mos- 18yrs) fairly severe asthma, the climate hasn't mattered much ... if it isn't the temp there is always another trigger. The allergist said he'd never seen anyone so "exquisitely allergic". We were on imunotherapy, several inhalers (some for daily use one for emergency use) and finally I took her to an OMD (oriental medical doctor) I figured it couldn't hurt. After about 6 months of dietary changes, herbal medicines, acupuncture and other lifestyle changes, she was able to discontinue her inhalers and other regular meds (only have an inhaler for emergency use) with our regualr MDs approval...That was 6 years ago.

It is fairly strict though, if we deviate from the diet that works for her, don't get enough sleep, fresh air, exercise etc she starts wheezing and everything all over again, so she is not "cured" but it is under control (she doesn't need the herbs other than during stress seasons ...spring mold, winter cold..and we do acupuncture only about once per year now).

It worked for us. Ask your doctor. I live in SC and the mold here is pretty bad, Florida is probably just as bad. Good Luck to you and your family.
