I have gotten cold sores my whole life.
I had a prescription for Zovirax(cream) years ago, but I never bothered to get it refilled because Abreva works the same for me.
4 things:
1.I apply Abreva.
2. As soon as the Abreva cream is dissipated(whiteness goes away) I put on Carmex, liberally and often, I never give my lip a chance to dry out. I probably do Abreva 3-4 times a day and Carmex a million.
3.I pop L Lysine, probably 3 or 4 a day when I get one.
4. I MUST start the above at the first tingle. If I do that, I'd say 75% of the time, the cold sore, while it lasts for a few days, never gets big or noticeable, just a slight bump, no sore.
