Has anyone ever saved up their loose coins in a five gallon jug (like those big crystal water jugs that you turn upside down to put on top of the dispensers)? I have one that is half full and I am trying to guess how much money might be in it. My husband thinks about a thousand... but that seems high to me. I am wondering if anyone here has ever cashed out their coins from one of these to see how much money I might have if it is half full! Any thoughts anyone? Thanks!

you'd be surprised how fast the change adds up. I have cashed mine in when it was like 1/4 full and gotten about $300!! I was so surprised. I think your husband is guessing a little high, but you will still be shocked how mush it turns out to be. I throw my pocket change in at the end of every day. It adds up quick and u dont miss it.
Make sure you take it to a place like Commerce Bank , where they don't take a percentage of it.

Let us know how much!

According to the Coinstar website, a 1 gallon jar averages out to $228.34. (and there are other estimates in the $200-225 range)

We have one and had been saving for a couple years. We cashed it in late June before we went to Las Vegas, it was 1/2 full and there were ALOT of pennies in it, we had $553.
So less pennies and full would easily be over $1000.

I asked that once, and have the tag to prove it. :) Never did fill it up to find out though...

My quart size milk bottle yields $100 plus or minus every 3 months or so. I don't think I would be able to handle a 5 gallon jug.

Coinstar estimates that a 1 gallon container can contain about $228, so your husband is about half right...unless it is all pennies. ;)

We do the same thing. some times there are lots of pennies and then the amount is lower. I tend to forget about the jug untill I kick it with my toe and make dh cash it it!

Before we went to Hawaii a couple of years ago my Dbf took in one of those large jugs and there was $1200 and some change. We about DIED!!! My boyfriend thought there would only be about $200, and I was hoping for around $500. We were so surprised we had to call the bank back 3 times (we just dropped off the jug and had them sort it). It does add up quick!!!

We don't have a water jug, but we do have one of those huge milk bone containers from Sam's club that we keep change in. It was about half to 3/4 full when we moved here 2 years ago and I think there was about $500 in it.

I counted one day the money in ours when I was getting out quarters for the garage sale and I think we have over $300 now.

It would add up faster, but I use the credit card for most things.

Ours was almost 1/2 full a few months back. Cashed it in for Disney & got $733!! I was shocked!!

I would say that is about right. We did that once and it was just over half full. We had over $800 in it.

Wow! We are going in April and ours is probably only 1/4 full right now. I thought that it could serve as the kids spending money. I guess I need to decide if there should be a limit on their spending money. Otherwise they would spend it on 'junk' they'll never play with again.

Never used one of those jugs before but I know of at least 3 different people who used them and went to bring them in full and the jug broke trying to get it out of the house. Either really secure the bottom when you move it, or divide it into a few smaller containers when you go to count :goodvibes Good luck saving $1,000. Like someone said before try to make sure its mostly silvers :)

Hope you have a dolly to haul it to the bank/coin sorting place - I can only imagine how heavy a 50-gallon jug full of coins would get!

My ex had one FULL... mostly pennies though.. and a few buttons :rotfl2:

It was about $800 I think.

OMG malibuconlee your ticket caption CRACKED me up!!!

I usually go to the bank coin sorter when I've got about a quart bag full of coins, and that's generally in the $40-60 range. I'd rather do that throughout the year than have to wrestle a huge jar.

We just cashed in our "full to the tippy top" WDW popcorn bucket and it had about $200 in it. We were hoping for more... but still were happy. And we don't usually fish quarters out for anything, so it was probably a pretty good mix of coins...................P

When our jug was half full it came to about $650.
It was nice to have our spending money for the trip.
