Coins in a five gallon jug?

i remember my glass coin jar from high school. i forget the exact amount but it did buy my first car, pay my insc for the year, pay for drivers ed and gave it a new paint job!!! my car was 800 i think. and it was about 2/3 full!!

We have a jug that is about 2/3 full. I took out about $100 for spending money for our recent trip to WDW. It didn't make much of a dent. All that is in the jug are pennies and quarters. I can only imagine how much it will be when it gets full!! I save nickels and dimes in a smaller bank.

This thread reminded me...

When I was growing up(20+ years ago), one of our neighbors(Mom, Dad and 4 kids) had the old style water jug(glass). The Dad would throw his change in the jar every night. Well, after a couple years, the jug was full and it was time to count it out. The whole family got into the counting and rolling of the change. It took them a couple of days to roll it up. When Dad came back from depositing the change at the bank, he surprised the family with a trip to Disney! There was enough money in that change jar to take the entire family to Disney for a week!

So, DH and I now have our own jar. It seems to be taking us a lot longer to fill that jar up. But, I am determined to cash it in one day for our own trip to Disney.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I am guessing we might have about $800.00. How exciting! Keep saving everyone it is so easy to do and seems to add up quickly!!

My parents had a ceramic bank in their room. It was the kind that didn't have a stopper. You had to break it open to get the money out, which was a good incentive to keep saving. When we finally drilled into the bottom, there was over $700 in there and that was nowhere near as large as a 5-gallon water bottle.

Of course, it depends what the mix of coins is. I save my quarters separate from other coins. We use those when we go to Seaside, NJ to the arcade. I only cash in the other coins at the bank. Without quarters, the change doesn't add up to as much, though we went to Seaside a few weeks ago and I had over $50 in quarters in a short Tootsie Roll bank.

I have a jar that holds a small baggie size, when it is full I empty it into a new baggie and place the baggie into the "Disney Box"! :thumbsup2 I have four in there (since this September) and will continue to do this until our September 2008 trip. I cannot wait to see just what a year of my change adds up to! :goodvibes I guess a lot depends on if you have more silver than pennies! :) Thank goodness the banks accept loose change and will count it for you! :) Our bank (credit union) will not accept rolled change whatsoever, it must be loose! I refuse to use Coinstar, it takes 10% and while some of that does go to charities, I would rather just give my money to the charity of my choice (St Judes)!

Just be careful! My cousin and his family had coins in a 5 gallon glass water jug. When he lifted it, the bottom broke off and it cut across his foot. He had lots of stitches.

It is amazing how quickly the change adds up.

I cashed in a large jar a while back and got over $100 bucks.
