Hi to all

During the past few months DD17 has developed some anxiety/stress issues which have affected her physically. She now has acid reflux and sleep issues.
:sad2:

We are in the midst of trying to find a therapist who is the "right" fit for her. Speaking with one on the phone (who was recommended to us but can't help us), she said that we need a therapist who uses cognitive behavior therapy. :confused3 :confused3

Educate me :teacher: :teacher: Has anyone heard of this or uses it?

Frustrating watching your child lose herself....she is hanging in there knowing that we are trying to get her help but it is beginning to impact her life where she doesn't want to go out much especially in the evening. :worried:

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am waiting for the therapist to call me back with recommendations on who might be able to help her. :scratchin

Please send some :wizard: and prayers this way.

As always you guys are very supportive. THANKS!! :goodvibes :goodvibes

Have a Magical Disney Day!! :earsboy:

I don't know but me and my 14yodd are experiencing reflux from stress. Definetly a change in diet is imperative until you get the stress figured out. I have to keep cutting things out and not eating snacks at night. It stinks. Until then here is some good thoughts that things go her way soon.

Search engines can be a wonderful thing...HTH

Regarding her acid reflux...

Tomato products, pork products and hot foods are the biggest culprits for indigestion...dietwise, you could start there.

~P&PD for you and your DD :wizard: I hope she gets better soon~

There is a hospital in Wisconsin that specializes in CBT for anxiety disorders. DD spent 3 weeks there 5 years ago. I don't know where in the midwest you are, but here is a link. If you would like any further info, feel free to PM me.

CBT is supposed to be the best treatment for anxiety. It's kind of hard to go into the "method" but if you do an internet search on it you will get the idea of what it is. One caution, many (most) psychologists "claim" to be trained in Cognitive Behavior Therapy but they really aren't. My psychiatrist says that there are only a few certified programs that teach it and it is important to find a properly trained one. I can tell you that in my hometown area where we have TONS of shrinks and psychologists, I am told that there is only ONE psychologist out of all of them that is properly trained.

I can't give you any advice on how to find the "right" one, but I just thought I let you know what I was told.

I suffer from Anxiety Disorder. I was housebound for a year and a half in the mid 90s. I never experienced acid reflux, but I did suffer from sleeplessness and anxiety attacks.

I saw a therapist who taught me use Congnative Behavior Techniques to relax and overcome my anxiety.

It is a slow process but it does work by empowering you.

It helped me in these ways: I was very afraid to drive in a car(My anxiety disorder was a result of a hit and run by a drunk driver) the therapist recommended that I take a seek and find book with me. DH drove and I did my puzzles until we arrived at our destination. 5 min. trips were torture at first but eventually those became 15 min and so on.

I was also "fearful" of waiting in line or being stuck in traffic. The therapist recommended that I park the car, run in, grab the first thing I saw(which was spaghetti sauce) and go to the 10 or less aisle, pay and leave. I went to the store maybe 3 times before I could even to that but boy was I proud of myself when I finally did.

Cognative Behavior Techniques involve placing yourself in your "anxious" place and allowing you to "react and respond" to your anxiety. It takes awhile to get the hang of it.

Also, have your DD buy a journal and write her feelings, her worries and her issues. After she is done with the day's "anxieties" have her write all that she is grateful for and her strengths.

It has been my experience that people with stress issues feel out of control in one or many areas of their life. If she can get a handle on what those are, and with your help get them under control, she may be feeling better in no time. I certainly recommend finding a good therapist if for nothing else than to have someone to talk to.

Feel free to PM me.
