Coffee lovers question

That's so funny that you both think the pods are only good for 4-6 cups. We are happy filling the carafe (which provides a little more than 10 cups), stronger than that would be hard to handle. We pretty much always bring coffee (and the filters) from home. The times I have asked for a refill from the ladies I have never been charged. I think Joffrey's is way better than what they had before, but probably still better to get what the girls like from GG or bring from home.

Same here. We used the pods for large pots of coffee and thought it was perfectly fine. The in-room coffee in the DVC room we had at AK (Joffrey's French Roast) tasted better than the coffee I brought from The Fresh Market. It was our first introduction to Joffrey's, and now I order it online.

We also asked housekeeping for more pods and did not get charged. It never occurred to us that we would be charged for more since this isn't typically how hotels do business.

To the op, be sure you bring filters if you bring your own coffee.

The thing is you aren't staying at a hotel. DVC is a timeshare and member's pay for the operation of the resort through their dues. That's why you are supposed to pay for any extra amenities you get. This is the current information from the member's Web site:

Pay As You Play
With Pay As You Play service, you'll be provided with the following amenities at no extra charge at the start of your stay and during each Housekeeping service. After that, you may purchase more amenities for the following fees (fees are subject to change):

  • Toiletries Package: $5 - includes 1 facial soap, 1 bath soap, 1 shampoo, 1 conditioner, 1 shower gel
  • Coffee Package: $3 - includes 1 package of coffee, 8 sugars, 8 creamers, 8 artificial sweeteners
  • Towel Package: $6 - includes 4 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 4 washcloths, 1 bath mat
  • Laundry Detergent (only in 1-, 2- and 3-Bedroom Villas): $1 - includes 1 box for 1 load of laundry
NOTE: Rates are subject to change without notice.

I debated replying because I don't want to venture too far from the OP's original message, but I can't shake the desire to thank you for this explanation. We just rented points rather than buying into DVC, and in the excitement of our first trip, i didn't think much beyond our getting a beautiful room at a great price. Being in Jambo, my mind was definitely in hotel mode, so we didn't think we were doing anything wrong by asking for extras. I do so hope we didn't cause the owner to incur expenses. Thank you so much for the new perspective. We will be sure not to make that mistake again.

If housekeeping actually placed a charge for those extras, it would have been added to your room account. If you ask a housekeeper in the hallway, it's unlikely they will charge for the extras. If you call housekeeping, then you might have been charged.

We have a Keurig in our Owner's Locker and then order K-cups through Amazon and have them delivered to resort.

And very often you don't get charged for extra towels/shampoo/coffee. But its best to set the expectation you'll see it on the room bill.

Being a semi-professional coffee snob myself, I've read the responses with great amusement, and some are downright funny (looking at you, Alice Sr!). As we most often drive, we're able to bring all our coffee needs. That means I pack a coffee grinder, whole coffee beans, half and half, filters (though we usually find a slew of leftover filters from previous occupants),and raw sugar. Further, we use bottled water for the machine since tap water produces an "off-tasting" mug o' java. I have learned over the years that no one person seems to have the same taste as the next when it comes to coffee. While my beautiful wife prefers what we brew in the room, she can take Joffrey's, too. I find the Big J to be watery and undrinkable. However, I know that my taste runs more to the stand-a-spoon-up strength of coffee. As with DVC resorts and wine (another love of mine), there are many varietals and styles to try and love when it comes to coffee strengths, brands, and varieties.

I think the water is a HUGE part of it at WDW. The coffee brought from home doesn't taste the same - which is probably why I'm just as satisfied with the Joffey's. It's gotten to mean Disney to my brain. Or I just brew it better than most. :stir: :goodvibes

But semi-professional coffee snob when you pour cream and sugar in? Oh Sleepy. :sad2:

;)

My most dear KAT, it's why I said "semi-professional." My wife has made me well aware having anything that actually changes the basic taste of coffee is wrong. . .this coming from a woman who, when I found her, would drink day-old coffee by reheating in the microwave. Further, I'll have you know I dollop the cream and parse the sugar in small amounts. :snooty:

Oh - dollop and parse! Why didn't you say so in the first place! :rotfl2:

Luv and I will have to enjoy a nice re-warmed cup of coffee while you and my DH dollop and parse. Yes, he's the same although he will give me the "yes, yes, I know I'm ruining the coffee". And yes, I've microwaved coffee the next day. :tiptoe:

Methinks your DH and I will have great stories to trade. . . :rolleyes1

Okay, so I showed this thread to my DD's who are all very amused we've all talked about coffee for this long!!! :) They are, of course, grateful for the input!

Since we already had a Garden Grocer order going, we just added on a can of Maxwell House and a package of filters. All together it was less than $10, and the girls plan on making a pitcher of it iced for the mornings. (we bring disposable cups with lids) We get milk from Garden Grocer, and they bought a bottle of vanilla syrup from Christmas Tree Shop the other day to bring with us. Luckily, it's plastic! (but will still pack in a ziplock bag)

I always say for all the negative comments that can come out of the DIS boards, 99 percent of them are threads like this with folks just being helpful. Thank you all so much for helping out my DD's!!

Well, don't get me started about making cold coffee drinks. *shudders* Seriously, like you, I've found most of the DIS to be fun and helpful as long as you avoid certain hot-button topics. Glad to hear your DDs' needs have been met. Cheers! :thumbsup2

If you're staying at the Boardwalk...

I think the bakery at BWV had the best Joffrey's has to offer on site. I never got a chance to taste what they were serving at the little bar upstairs. But the two varieties outside at the Boardwalk were nice. And the morning stroll was a nice start to the day.

Joffrey's at the BC marketplace in a refillable mug. That's my fix and I'm sticking to it!

Definitely buy off-site or pack in your carry-on. Disney coffee is nasty. I won't even entertain the notion of drinking their free Joffrey packs, as they are so weak that they resemble tea in the carafe. The only DVC shop that I have found good coffe in is at AKV Jambo. They had some Sulawesi last time I was there that was good, but in their infinite wisdom, you can't be sure they still carry it.

:rotfl: Word of caution for bringing your own in a carry-on! :rolleyes1 I tried that ONCE - I brought a 1 Lb bag (we have coffee filters in our Owners Locker) and I was singled out at security and they went thru my entire bag including opening the coffee & scanned me and all of my stuff but good. I was not previously aware but NOW know that drug smugglers sometimes use coffee to try to hide the scent of the drugs from any drug sniffing dogs that may be in the airport!!! They didn't leave a pair of undies unchecked let me tell ya!! :rotfl2: I will now only pack it in a checked bag OR I buy the Maxwell House stuff that is in the large tea-bag type things (they only make about 3 weak cups tho so you have to double 'em if you want more or like it stronger).

:). I was going to mention that if you do pack it, you might want to be aware that it increases your chance of having your luggage searched - whether carry on or checked - 'cause the dogs will probably tag it. So if you care, you might want to be sure to pack the clean undies (and no illicit drugs).

Funny story, Annie! Obviously, you don't watch enough police procedurals on TV. pirate:
