Coach's Corner - It's Summer!!!!

Just an FYI - you can get Road IDs in styles that don't have to been wore on the wrist. My sister likes the tag that attaches to her shoe laces.

Not to be too graphic, but there are times when a person is knocked right out of their shoes when hit by a car in which case the ID will not be on the person when emergency personnel need it. Can be worn around ankle.

Exactly what I was going to say. Rarely do a pedestrian's shoes stay with them in a car vs pedestrian encounter. I have an ankle RoadID for the bike and a wrist RoadID for the run and swim.

I wear the ankle band road id. Plus, it can double as a chip strap for triathlon. I hardly notice it when I run. I travel for work and do runs in towns where barely anyone knows me, so it is important to me to have.

On the wildlife viewing, I was very, very excited to see a humpback whale on my long run yesterday up in Alaska. I rarely see them (don't live here, but work here occasionally), and it was quite a treat! :goodvibes

It was a pretty brutal May up in Ohio weather wise but we have had a week of cooler weather which is nice.

I wanted to add one more tip for when the weather is warm. I don't carry anything when I run but in the heat on long runs I need to rehydrate and maybe even take a GU. I place a water bottle and GU packet in my mail box and do a course that brings me back around my house. I might stop once, twice, or even three times once I am in marathon training and doing 18-20 mile long runs.

Also, if you have a park near you with a drinking fountain you can do an out and back past in and get in two water breaks. I have one about 2 miles from my house next to a paved all purpose trail and it comes in handy.

I love a run in the summer rain provided it isn't too hard. Once you have to run through a lot of standing water your shoes get pretty heavy and that isn't great on the leg muscles.

Good luck everyone.

::yes:: I do this at the park I like to run, which has water fountains in three different spots on the trail, and when I run the beach, where I can put together anything from 3 to 10 miles with water fountains every couple miles at public beach access areas.

FYI, even running before sunrise is now miserable in FL. :sad2: I went out at 5am yesterday and it was nearly 80-degrees, 85% humidity, and no air movement at all. Like running in a swamp. A dark, stinky swamp. It's going to be a loooooooong summer...

S.W. FL. here and began a 7.5 miler at 6:50AM today, 81F at 73%H and looking forward to the hot and humid stuff to start. :thumbsup2 Today's was almost as much fun as the 14.1 I did at WDW, FW to SoG and back, last Friday AM in the RAIN.
