Bored this morning with two sleeping munchkins I went nostalgia surfing and came across the first sleep away camp I ever went to. I'm so sad to find out they are closing!
However, while my memories are fond, unless they changed their policies in a great fashion I'm not so sure I'd send my kids there.
Tell me what YOU think...
The showers were co-ed and commnual. I recall a large room with a cement floor and maybe 5 or 6 shower heads coming out of the wall. There was a sign outside that you could flip from boys to girls but most of the time, it was ignored. I can't tell you how many showers I took with boys and girls side by side. I remember co-ed skinny dipping and coed campouts.
There was a seperate "house" down the road for the senior campers that was co-ed and I'm not sure how well they were monitored.
The camp was very laid back and if you didn't want to do anything, you didn't have to. You could have portable radios (boom boxes) and phone calls and care packages were encouraged.
Now mind you I was about 8 or 9 when I attended so that would put this in the very early 1980's.
I'm quite sure things have changed with this hyper sensititve society we have today.
Nothing inappropriate ever happened to anyone that I knew of and all my memories are fond ones.
I'm having lunch with my mom today. I'll have to ask her if she actually KNEW what that camp was all about and if so what the deal was!

There is no way in hell I would send my kid to a camp like that.

:earseek:

The camp I went too was completely opposite!! We were not allowed to have co-ed swimming!! We were closely monitored the entire week. They did not allow groups of girls and boys to wonder off or spend time unsupervised.

It's funny thinking back to summer camp!! I think none of the girls were interested in the boys. Instead all the girls had crushes on the male college aged camp counselors. :teeth:

I just can't imagine a camp like that....even in the early 80's. What was the name of this camp?

Uhm...wow. I know I'm new here and not entitled to my two cents yet but I'm jumping in with both feet.
Did your parents know about the goings on at this camp? I'm childless but doubt that any future offspring would attend a place like this one.

the only camp i was ever allowed to go to was band camp.

What a nice thing to say.

My cousins went there, for years, and I don't believe that there were coed communal showers. No need to roll your eyes at me.

I don't believe it ever happened.

but maybe that is where she saw Dennis Quaid nekid showering! :sunny:

(was it Dennis Quaid or Randy Quaid or a look-a-like Quaid?....I've lost track)
