CMs saying Merry Christmas?

Well people relate christmas with Santa Claus. Doesn't he say "Merry Christmas every one and to all a good night". And as far as I know, Santa doesn't have anything to do with Christians
It sounds stupid to say "Happy Holidays" because holidays for every religion happen every month. Why don't we say happy holidays every day of the year? What makes December so special?

Don't any of you folks celebrate Festivus?

Sounds like we've got the start of the Airing of Grievances right here.

Who has the aluminum pole? ;)

I think Old Navy has got it right......

But in all seriousness, why can't we say Merry Christmas?

Why does it always have to be something religous?

I have to agree with many posters I have lost the spirit of Christmas because everyone is arguing over what to say or not to say.

I think everyone needs to get over themselves and if someone says Merry Christmas and you are Jewish or whatever you say Thank and same to you!!!!

:confused3

Merry Christmas!!

This is why I hate this time of year.
I don't celebrate Christmas or any other holiday this time of year. And I don't get offended when someone wishes me Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or anything else. I politly say "and the same to you". When someone asks me if I'm ready for Christmas i just say that I'm as ready as I'm going to be. I don't get into a debate about what I do or do not celebrate. But, I am so sick of listening to people arguee about what should or shouldn't be said. If you want to say Merry Christmas-fine, but don't get all bent out of shaoe because others feel it's better to say Happy Holidays. What's so wrong with being sensative to other people's feelings? Just because someone says Happy Holidays they aren't putting down Chritmas(to those who celebrate it) Why should everyone have to be wished a Merry Christmas if that is not what they celebrate or believe? Why do so many people view Happy Holidays as so bad? I just don't get it?

This PC thing burns me up!!

What about ME......It "offends" ME when people say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas!

I don't see how you can be offended when somebody wishes you "Happy Holidays" if they don't know your religious beliefs. It's a general greeting that is full of well wishes and happiness. I felt a little embarrassed when I wished somebody Merry Christmas and was told the recipient wasn't a Christian, so now I wish people Happy Holidays if I am not sure that they are a Christian. I know some non-Christians celebrate Christmas (which is fine), but for me it is a religious holiday to celebrate the miracle of Christ's birth. If I walked down the street and wished everybody I passed Happy Hannakuh or Merry Ramadan, then I would be offending many Christians, at least where I live.

I guess I mean that when they say Happy Holidays I feel like they are saying it because they have to....because it's the PC thing to say. I certainly acknowledge Kwanza and Hannukah and whatever other holiday is celebrated but I feel like Christmas is being pushed to the side. I see a lot of God being taken out of schools and state/federal facilities and it makes me angry.

To be blunt I hate this Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas arguement. To me it is just people on the right and the left trying to find another way to make a point. If I have to start worrying about and analyze what a person really means by saying "HH" or "MC" to me then sign me up for a Festivus Tree.

Flyerfan,

A few suggestions for a happy holiday season:

1) Next time somebody wishes you "Happy Holidays", assume that they are wishing that you have a happy holidays and enjoy the well wishes from your fellow man. Assuming the worst, that they are only doing it because they are forced to, just isn't keeping with any holiday spirit, is it?

2) Instead of focusing on the few less Merry Christmas' that are being said, keep in mind the millions and millions and millions of Merry Christmas' that are being said. Christmas sure isn't being pushed aside anyplace I look.

As for whether the government should use schools and courthouses to promote one religion over another, or promote religion in general, that's not really a Disney issue, is it?

I would think CMs are told in general not to say Merry Christmas, because it is not PC to mention the name of our NATIONAL holiday :confused3 :rotfl: but how about during MVMCP? I said Merry Christmas to every CM because a) I wanted them to have a Merry Christmas and b) I was very curious if they could say the word Christmas at the Christmas party. I found only 1 who resonded in kind. It sort of shocked me, since I had happily paid $45 for the Christmas ticket and was clear what I was buying before I bought it. We were there in October and did not get MNSSHP tickets because we do not celebrate that holiday. If we had bought tickets, I would expect people to mention Halloween though.

What do you guys think? Disney is making lots of money on Christmas party tickets, but it is probably a fine line on how they should respond during the holidays. Probably nothing they said could please everyone.

It didn't dawn on me at the time, but perhaps none of the CMs celebrate Christmas and so it was not their instinct to respond that way.

I'm not looking for an ugly debate. Let's be kind to one another. I'm just curious about what you all think!!

:flower:
Merry Christmas!

like Janets I am not offended when someone wishes me "Merry Christmas" even though we are Jewish :)

as for my kids I told them if someone says "merry Christmas" just say "thank you, you too" - but generally what people actually say to them is "what is santa getting you for Christmas"... so they are always like "we don't celebrate Christmas, we're Jewish!"

it's cute when they say it LOL

WRT to spilling the beans about santa, angel1, I told them not to tell - but you know kids learn from their older siblings usually right? don't blame this one on the Jews :lol :lol (that was a joke)

Not religious in the slightest but here in the UK for me and many others it’s Happy Christmas or Merry Chistmas.. and the only time we have a Happy Holiday is when we been to Disney World or a beach in Spain… Saying Happy Holidays here, is to me like you guys walking around say Happy Vacations, ok joking a side Happy Holiday is ok here as Holiday means two things in the same word for us.

I enjoy Christmas, I like the whole Santa thing, it’s what the majority of the UK people celebrates, sure not everyone does but you go with majority rules. Like you will not be running around the middle east saying Merry Christmas but equally if I was running about the middle east I wouldn’t be offend if they said happy whatever holiday they are celebrating, wouldn’t feel the slightest bit offended as why should I. We have Muslims in our family and they sent my son a Chistmas Present that and I am looking at it now, it’s got Santa and “Ho Ho Ho Merry Chistmas” on the wrapping paper so I can safely say they not offend that we celebrate it and if they where up here this time of year we have them round for Christmas dinner and I bet they would come and enjoy it with us.

Christmas is many things to many people, call it what you like and say a friendly greeting how you like, if it’s done as friendly greeting then I can’t see the harm in it even if the person you say it not celebrating it themselves.

Personally Christmas to me is a time to be with family, and be thankful for what you have got and to give to others. Like I said not everyone cup of tea but I can celebrate it the way I want and have it mean to me what I want and I don’t need to be religious to do that.

Oh and I found this on a web site, how to say “Merry Christmas” around the world, now you can offend people in there own language (joking) LOL ;)

Mostly most of them said Merry Christmas back except the one cm :confused3 Some even said Happy Holidays and i replied Merry Christmas back so i actually get offended when they say Happy Holidays since im Catholic but oh well whatcha gonna do? Anyway just had to share lol

Reasonable people can certainly see past the foolishness of the fanatics and get along quite nicely, whether they are in agreement or not.

Feliz Navidad!
Well said, I think we really are on the same page. Now for those of you who might have missed this classic interchange on CNN today featuring clueless Kyra Phillips in the hands of Sam Seder... :rotfl:

PHILLIPS: Let's start with the holiday card. What do you think, Sam?

SEDER: Listen, as far as the war on Christmas goes, I feel like we should be waging a war on Christmas. I mean, I believe that Christmas, it's almost proven that Christmas has nuclear weapons, can be an imminent threat to this country, that they have operative ties with terrorists and I believe that we should sacrifice thousands of American lives in pursuit of this war on Christmas. And hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer money.

PHILLIPS: Is it a war on Christmas, a war Christians, a war on over-political correctness or just a lot of people with way too much time on their hands?

SEDER: I would say probably, if I was to be serious about it, too much time on their hands, but I'd like to get back to the operational ties between Santa Claus and al Qaeda.

PHILLIPS: I don't think that exists. Bob? Help me out here.

SEDER: We have intelligence, we have intelligence.

PHILLIPS: You have intel. Where exactly does your intel come from?

SEDER: Well, we have tortured an elf and it's actually how we got the same information from Al Libbi. It's exactly the same way the Bush administration got this info about the operational ties between al Qaeda and Saddam [...]

KNIGHT: These businesses are taking millions and millions of dollars in from Christians, in particular, and others who celebrate Christmas, giving gifts in the name of the Christmas season, and yet they're so worried about offending people like my opponent here that they don't want to mention the word Christmas. People are sick and tired.

SEDER: Bob, it's the holiday time, I'm not your opponent.

KNIGHT: Yes, you are. Yes, you are.

SEDER: I do agree with Bob. I think what should happen is companies should calculate how much money they're getting from people who are celebrating Christmas and provide exactly that much amount of Merry Christmas, because that is exactly how I would want any type of religious holiday to be celebrated [...]

SEDER: Hannukah is not a high holiday. Our high holidays are Rosh Hashanna and Yom Kippur, which I'm sure Bob has been protesting why there are not more Yom Kippur sales or Rosh Hashanah sales during those holidays. Why shouldn't there be, right Bob?

KNIGHT: If that was associated with that holiday, then maybe I would join you. But it never has been.

SEDER: Bob, have you ever protested Martin Luther King Day not being celebrated. Do you resent when people don't say "Happy Martin Luther King Day" a month out in advance?

My 2 cent. like it is needed.... Well I have friends with all kinds of beliefs. So HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT. ;)

I didn't read the whole thread but it seems silly to me to not say Christmas at a Christmas party. I understand saying Happy Holidays in general as you don't know what holidays different people celebrate, but if someone is at something that's known to be a Christmas party, even if they don't celebrate Christmas I don't think anyone would be offended to be told Merry Christmas.

Before bemoaning the PC nature of America, might I suggest that you ponder how often you wish your Jewish friends a Happy Rosh Hashanah or acknowledge Yom Kippur, the two holiest days in the Jewish calendar? Is there a Mickey's Happy Passover Seder in the spring? Do you always remember to acknowledge Ramadan? Does Mickey celebrate Eid with his Muslim friends? Christianity is the dominant religion in this country. Every religious minority knows this, and many celebrate a secular Christmas to one degree or another. But if some members of these faith communities feel more comfortable saying "Happy Holidays," I honestly think you should let it go!

But don't wish them a Happy Yom Kippur. I've learned the "hard" way that wasn't appropriate.

(The Jewish friend who explained it was very nice and took it in the manner I intended it, but I don't wish people Happy Yom Kippur any longer.)

(flame suit on) check!!! Ok. . .When we went to Germany at Epcot and other countries, the cm's would say something and then state "that's how we say "whatever" or that's what we believe". Well. . . my crew and I would like to wish each and every one of you a Merry CHRISTmas and a Happy New Year (because that is what my family and I believe). :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

but I have a question? I think that I am secure enough in my religion that when someone tells me to have a Happy/Merry "whatever", I in return say Merry Christmas. Doesn't that make a little more sense than everyone being mad because he said Merry Christmas? Yes, YES there will be someone that tells me just to says Happy Holidays that way I do not have to worry about stepping on toes, but my point is. . .I think it would be easier that when approached. . DON'T be rude. Say thank you. In this day and time, I find it a pleasure if someone has something other than a rude or disrespectful comment come out of their mouth any time they hear something that they do not agree with. I will continue to say Merry Christmas. I have for 30 + years and do not plan to stop.

Just like someone said earlier. As long as it is not deliberate to HURT you, think of it as someone going out on a LIMB and being nice in the wonderful season!!!
