clueless... please help

I can honestly say that I have not one clue about timeshares and how they work. For some reason everytime I look at the info my eyes cross and nothing makes sense. I was hoping that someone could explain what the average costs are for a family of 5 to buy DVC. Like, what kind of down payment, monthly charges, etc. I have only heard great things about it, but I need to know what goals I need to attain to get there!

Its really hard to put a number on your question. It would be based on your travel habits, size of accomodations you would be looking at, and when you would most likely travel.
Most will start in with a basic 150 point contract - $13,500 @ $90 per point
and dues would be $597 a year or $3.98 per point. This is assuming a purchase at SSR. If you finance through Disney you can do a 10%, 20% or more down and get up to a 10 year loan @ 9.75%. In reality it is expensive up front but over time it will pay for itself. You also have to understand that this isn't like a normal timeshare where you buy a week, the same week every year, or a block of months you can travel in, or red white and blue weeks......you get a point allotment every year and you use these points how ever and whenever you would like...its a great program. One year you can stay in a studio or maybe a 1 or 2 bedroom.....very flexible.
