Club 33 expansion and resulting new exteriors

Yes. If you were in a wheelchair, the only way for you to access Club 33 wasn't very dignified at all, and those legitimate ADA issues are not to be minimized. It has nothing to do with monetizing a beloved spot and everything to do with the fact that there simply wasn't another spot to create an entrance that was ADA compliant.

I do understand that. I just think there was a way to put the elevator back there without taking the entire Court of Angels for Club 33.

I completely agree.

It was my understanding that the elevator was put in due to ADA requirements.

So, I think that "the sake of capital interest" means that DLR actually gets permission to run Club 33, not because they wanted to get rid of the Court of Angels.

I am not begrudging people that are in need of an elevator. That was not my point. If my post some how confused you, I apologize for that.

Sorry for not understanding....so is the Court of Angels currently walled off to non Club 33 guests? :worried: Is there a previous photo of this?

Correct. The only way to access the Court of Angels is to be dining at Club 33. Those doors being discussed are what separate the general masses from Club 33. What do you mean by previous photo - what Court of Angels looked like before it was given over to Club 33?

ETA: And to be clear, it's not "currently". It's permanently.

:sad::(:sad:

I will miss that beautiful little area of NOS when I'm not dining at Club 33 (which is 99.9% of the time!:rotfl2:). I wonder if it will at least get its blue Christmas tree with crescent moon ornaments back this year, although I don't know how much space there would be for it, and not that anyone would be able to see it...

There's some pics of COA in my May 13 Trip report in my sig (sorry, no time to go grab the actual pics)

No- was wondering if there was a photo of the new entrance that is now blocking the view of the Court. Thanks.

Yes, on page one.

I'm with the people who will miss the Court of Angels very much! I think if it had been re-modeled or changed to something everyone can enjoy there wouldn't be such a big fuss. But it's the fact that they took something away from everyone and made it exclusive to a very few... The vast majority of guests will never see this space again. :(

1) I hate that giant, clunky elevator taking up space in the Court of Angels;

2) That off-center window makes me laugh whenever I see it;

3) The dining room chairs do not photograph well. I am hoping that they look wonderful and amazing in person, but in photos they don't look very good; and

4) While I'm sure that I will have a different impression if I am ever fortunate enough to visit the new version of Club 33, and I am hopeful that more work will be done on it, right now -- just from the photos I have seen -- it does appear that a bit of the mystique and allure of the club have been (at least visually) reduced. Again, it may look fantastic in person, but the photos certainly do not capture the feel of a high-end, intimate private club/restaurant.

I do especially agree with point #1!
With todays engineering prowess, one would think that a far better and inconspicuous alternative would be possible. Even if this area was still accessible by the general public, the original ambiance no longer exists, because of these renovations. Especially due to the said clunky and most obtrusive elevator jutting outward near the beautiful staircase. It (Elevator) is a tremendously hideous looking creation.

I'll reserve judgement until I see the final product, as it looks now I'm not impressed but add a few shutters, extend a few railings, add some awnings, add a few hanging plants, etc, etc, etc and the look will completely change.

Granted, but.....that hideous monstrosity of an elevator. Perhaps paint a nice, subdued design on it, like flowers or ivy.

Exactly, how hard would it have been to place the elevator elsewhere?

I agree... there HAD to be a way to recess it into the main structure vs. sticking it on the outside. I have a floorplan somewhere I'll look for when I get home.

Art Nouveau was in its heyday 1890 to 1910 and was a style that became very popular in New Orleans at the time (and still)...so if you go by some original NOS material that stated it represents New Orleans "at the turn of the century"...it's not so far off to expect to see some examples in NOS. In fact I have seen examples of it there many times in the past.

And wasn't the Court of Angles bas relief plaque done in Art Nouveau style? I seem to recall that it was. Maybe wrong though.

1850...yeah...too early for Nouveau. But turn of the century? Yeah. I can see it. And I know that they were trying to add some of that Nouveau style that also appeared in the Frog Princess.

I don't think they're done with the exterior. I think they just wanted to get the major construction scaffolding down. I would expect to see more detail work installed by portable lifts on overnight shifts. At least I hope so.

I do like that they've used the traditional Club colors of dark royal blue and gold in some of the glasswork and lamps. Nice touch IMHO. Could look really nice at night.

Wow, Mary Jo, that was very sweet of you to say! :love:

I saw a few new pictures of the interior, and it looks much better than I thought from the pictures yesterday. I'm glad about that! Still not wowed by the drapery or the big blank window, but the floor is pretty! I couldn't tell it was parquet before and you couldn't see the edge detail.

This is what I mean! It's too early to reserve judgement. I'm SURE that Disney has a grand plan and that it is going to be beautiful, we just have to have faith and wait and see. It is still in the new phases… what were they supposed to do? Keep the scaffolding and walls up for a few years until every last detail was added?

I also thought "princess and frog' for some reason, because of the turn of the century New Orleans flair they had going on in there… like the restaurant that Tiana wanted to renovate in the movie…
