How well are the stores stocked near you?
It's been a loooooong nearly 2 years and my clothes are tired so I've been searching for replacement items. In particular dressy casual sweaters for going to diner and such. Trouble is no matter where I go there offerings are just blah so I just leave with a few chatchkees but essentially empty handed. Its' as if one single style of cardigan is made with different yarns and colors but it's the same pattern. There are no zippers to be found, or cute buttons etc, most everything is pullover and nothing with embellishments. I was searching for a baby gift recently and it took forever, I ended up looking in at least 8 stores & nothing that I remember liking for my kids is around anymore (spoiled by Babies R Us) so I was thrilled when I found suitable items. The lady at Nordstrom told me they only get in a few bits at a time. Shoes are tough to find as well. The oddest thing is that the stores look very picked over and sparse, like it's the week after Christmas and even when I land in a store that is full upon closer inspection the stuff on the racks looks like it's either ubiquitous or from old stock rummage sale. Speaking of Christmas, the Holiday ornaments look like they were designed by someone who was up all night drinking.
I feel like Rip Van Winkle with money on hand and nothing to buy, same vibe happened when looking for a car, it's very odd so I wonder is this pretty much the same everywhere?

Yes.

So much merchandise is stuck in shipping containers waiting to be delivered, or just non- existent due to the pandemic.

I went shopping 3 weeks ago for some pieces to update. Nothing of interest to be found.

My favorite stores have revamped their styles and merchandise they carry and I am not sure I will shop there again.

Car prices are through the roof due to shortages. Looks like we will wait another couple of years to buy. Hope my auto with 184,000 miles can wait.

And holiday merchandise- so much blue and white in fall decor this year. I'm a traditional autumn colors type. Not a fan of the blues and whites for fall.

Not just clothing, or clothing stores. We went to a bunch of stores last weekend. So many had shelves they were very empty. Items in particular that I noticed:

Clothing - spread much further apart. Normally cannot walk thru the clothing section with a shopping cart, now plenty of space. They have removed racks...
Legos - Just happened to notice, an isle dedicated to legos, perhaps 30 boxes on the shelves
Paper Towels - Some stores have put back their limit 1 per customer signs, although they all had paper towels.
Ice Cream - Yeah, not sure what was up with that, but again very limited selection across all major bands

Well, now you know what I do on the weekend. Look for new shirts, and buy Legos and Ice Cream for a real happening Saturday night...

I feel you. Some of my clothes are starting to look a little tired too, but when I look I'm not seeing anything interesting at all. And yes, things seem picked over.

Buying new school clothes for DD was a struggle. I still haven't really bought her anything for the cold weather. Everything in the shops was mustard or baby poo brown. A blonde, blue-eyed girly girl with a deep tan cannot wear those colors. Sadness. We went to Kohls and the mall and all over. Nothing. She's stuck with plain jeans and whatever random souvenir t-shirt or sweatshirt we can find every time we go on an outing.

DH told me it's just the late 70s again. And then I threw a fit because as a young child I was outraged by my short hair, maroon buster brown oxfords, brown corduroy pants and beigy mustard button down shirt. When the mid 80s hit and everything turned pink and purple I was in heaven.

Yes, Kohl’s clothing racks and shelves are spaced further apart than in the past and there is noticeably less clothing on the fixtures that remain. I wasn’t really looking to buy anything, but I had $20 of Kohl’s cash to use from before. I ended up getting new underwear for both DH and myself from the clearance rack.

Yes, this! My Kohl's is so bare. It's eerie.

seems pickings are thin-we went to 3 major chain clothing stores looking for dockers cargo style pants for dh. none had any in stock. we checked their on-line stores and found none as well. managed to finally grab a couple pairs off amazon-right before they showed 'discontinued/no longer in stock'. women's clothing seemed picked through-mostly what was in stock was either at the super small or plus size end of the spectrum. the styles on sweaters ARE mostly cardigan pull overs/plain but i think that may be b/c the 70's have made a huge comeback on the fashion scene and i recall that the day to day sweaters we wore then were pretty plain b/c we tended to dress them up with jewelry.

Fortunately I don’t need any new clothing. What’s already in my closet will suffice. But if something catches my eye and is reasonably priced I’ll buy it.

I’ve pretty much given up on Macy’s, JC Penney, and some other mall anchors in the past few years. I miss Lord & Taylor. Boscov’s is good but it’s a bit of a haul.

So sad when Lord & Taylor closed. I used to get most of my career wear there. And a lot of my jewelry too. And the most wonderful house brand fuzzy wool sweaters.

LOFT sent an email about a month ago apologizing for the delay in receiving fall merchandise and the store near me is strangely bare. Same thing with White House Black Market. However, due to the fact that I will probably never go back to the office the way I used to, I probably will not shop there much anymore.

Luckily for me, pre-pandemic I was a clothes horse. I still have some basics with tags on them that I am finally wearing now.

I also think part of is is stores did their normal clearance for the spring and summer season but they haven't quite got the inventory to replace that for this fall/winter season.

Over the summer especially in July and August JCP and Khols seemed to be bursting at the seams on clearance items. I actually had a hard time shopping in JCP in their clearance because there was so much of it just racks upon racks upon racks. But once August hit when you normally would see more fall and winter stuff it's like they don't have that backfill of items and September left it even more bare. That's a big reason for my local Khols for their reshifting of items. I went there a few weeks back and they moved Sonoma over to a smaller section of the store, Croft & Barrow to a different part, Levi stayed the same, Juniors stayed the same but with less variety of items, Lauren Conrad and Vera Wang were very sparse

I went to Kohls a few weeks ago and in the plus size department, it was basically just activewear - not much everyday or dressy clothes at all.
Same here. At our local Kohls, they installed a Sephora store within Kohls and as a result, moved and significantly shrunk the the plus size department. As you found, it was pretty much all activewear and nothing I would wear to work.

I took my daughters to 6 different stores to get them a new outfit for picture day and the only thing available for in the juniors departments were mostly crop tops, pop culture t-shirts and way to short shorts. Nothing appropriate for their parochial school dress code. They ended up just wearing something from their closets.

Clothing stores by me? What are those? Sears and JCPenny are long gone.

I've been in Kohl's and TJMax several times before, they don't have clothes for me. I've even asked if they have any clothing for fat people, I've never found anything over large and they are all synthetic clothing. Can't stand that stuff unless I am specifically on the bicycle.

the kohls racks near me are full of stuff. like nothing has ever happened. Of course that could be because there's hardly every more than 10 cars in the parking lot and that includes employees

Crop tops are like everywhere, it's a big trend this summer/fall. From Nordstrom, to Macy's to Dillards to JCP to Khols to Walmart. I kept seeing so much of it even cardigan/light jackets were cropped.

Yes, I am 51 and many tops are now short (even when shopping in non junior departments). I honestly think the point is some are supposed to be worn with high waisted jeans. It is still a lot to absorb!
