Clothes for Middle School

My dd turns 13 this month and is finishing 7th grade. She has really cute clothes, most of which came from Ross or TJ Maxx. You can get many of the brands mentioned without paying through the nose. Luckily, my dd isn't too concerned about brands, she just knows what kind of look she wants and what works for her. There are times when we splurge on the latest fad, because who doesn't enjoy that? But I'm not going to pour a ton of money into a 12-year-old's wardrobe.

For the record, I love tighty whiteys on men. My dh wears them because I like 'em.

Probably the biggest thing to realize is that what is in and what is out varies greatly by area, by school, and even by "clique" within the school.

For example, no one cares about underwear at my daughter's school. She was fine this past year (7th grade) wearing the old girl Hanes underwear from Target, and we just finally bought regular old cotton Hanes bikinis from the adult section for her. She has no interest in Pink or anything else.

North Face is also not a big deal around here. Neither is Vera Bradley. There's some Aeropostale, Abercrombie and such, but it's not the only thing kids wear. Most of the kids wear Target or Walmart clothes mixed in with other brands. My daughter has experienced no teasing about clothes, but that could be as much a result of the group of kids she hangs with as anything else, and her attitude when someone says they don't like something she's wearing (she just shrugs it off with an "oh well - I do"). Different groups will have different levels of nastiness about this stuff....

So, you'll have to get to know your school, and then just see what your child actually wants. And if you want to keep things under control, encourage your child to make the kind of friends that value her for her, and won't tease her about anything :thumbsup2
