Clothes for Middle School

Just wondering what about boys?

My 3 were so easy. Youngest just completed eighth grade. Basic jeans and tshirts and athletic shoes. Winter add a hoodie

Middle school can be so difficult for dressing kids. Soooo glad we had a khaki and polo rule. No name brand labels could show. I would agree to get a copy of the written policy and ask if they think they would make any changes. One of our local school went to uniforms about a month before school started and parents were rightly quite upset. I would suggest that you take her, and a friend or two shopping a week or so before school starts so they can help each others find those important first day or two outfits and then shop after that for what is going to work for her. Good luck.

Just wondering what about boys?

I'm sure it varies, but around here, athletic stuff is really popular. Most of the boys in DS' junior high wear track pants or athletic shorts. The Nike shirts with the says are big, and Adidas and UnderArmour stuff is big too. Expensive athletic shoes are also the big thing. My son is going into 7th grade and he's a total shoe snob--he only wants to wear the Adidas Derrick Rose shoes. Fortunately we live right by the Adidas outlet and I go to the tent sale and stock up on them for super cheap.

A lot of the girls in his school are very athletic and kind of dress like tomboys...in a cute way.

My DS is entering middle school as well and the only thing I've heard of as a trend is Nike Elite socks with graduated bars that run up the back. Under armor has some of those as well. $15 per pair socks. He wears Nike shoes exclusively, so I hit the outlets once a month to keep up with his growing feet. Right now he has neon orange, yellow, and gray shoes. It seems like the trend right now.

I have been quietly weeding out his childish character tshirts and putting designers I like and see other kids wearing into his rotation of clothes. Hollister, Abercrombie, and others. I know what he likes, bright colorful things and tie dye and I make them fit into his life.

I never even thought of the good underwear for gym class thing. Good tip. My Ds really should waive out of PE but he wants to have a class where he thinks he can relax and won't have homework.

The biggie for the boys around here are no tightie whities. They all wear boxers and apparently make fun of kids who wear briefs. I switched my son over in 4th grade because I had a neighbor whose son had an awful time when changing for gym while wearing briefs in middle school. Kids can be so mean to each other sometimes.

Heck we tease grown men at work if they are wearing tightie whities- no one should wear those thing LOL

I teach at a middle school (dreading when my own girls go to middle school). The one thing that I see a lot of is North Face fleece jackets, both boys and girls. I have also been seeing a lot of Converse lately.

My DD14 is just finishing middle school and will be heading into HS this fall.

My DD is very athletic and hangs out with mainly her soccer/track friends. The last two years she finally started wearing jeans (Old Navy). Otherwise it is all about the athletic shorts (UA, Nike, Adidas, etc. - found at Ross and TJ Maxx) and school/athletic T's and sweatshirts.

This year she asked for Toms and Sperry shoes. She is quite the shoe diva, however for her it is all about the athletic (expensive) shoes. This is where she spends most of her money.

I am not sure what high school will bring, but it can't be more expensive than this stuff. She absolutely abhors A&F and Hollister.

Athletic shorts would have been nice. They are so NOT dress code in our schools and would have gotten demerits for wearing them.

I would wait for the school dress code before buying clothes. Personally, I don't buy all that stuff for my daughter. We just go to Target, Walmart or Meijer.

North face for sure in Jr. High and right now Toms are big and Uggs for the winter. One thing for sure is not walmart, target or kmart because that is a sure way to get your child made fun of! Jr. High is tough enough for a kid, why make it worse for them by being known as the "walmart kid".

Target does have some cute stuff and a lot of kids will buy a few things from there. Even the most popular kids, especially bathing suits. Here in Florida, they have way too many to go to the expensive places amd most have found that Target actually fits them better and are actually cuter, but this isn't about bathing suits. Continue on. :goodvibes

REALLY??? :sad2:
I am curious what work conversation topic would possibly lead to a male co-worker sharing what kind of underwear he wears... :rolleyes1

Then I am curious how someone else's choice of underwear is anyone else's business. :crazy2:
I mean, that's bad enough in middle school but I am assuming that we are talking about grown up adults in a workplace.

And finally, I can't wait to see someone explain to me why a co-worker would need to make a comment of any description to "tease" someone they work with into changing his choice of underwear.

What are you, the Skivvy Police? :rotfl:

In the front lines in the war against briefs, I'm sure your CEO can rest easy knowing you are on the job protecting the company from infiltration and takeover by tighty-whities... :lmao:

Sounds, at the least like bullying to me, and at the most like sexual harrassment.
You must have some really loose-lipped, tolerant men at your workplace.
Or maybe you work at a middle school?

I'm sure most grown folk are aware that there are medical conditions that require some men to wear boxers.

Perhaps you are not aware that there are also some medical conditions that require some men to wear briefs.
Either way, underwear is private business...at school and at work.
Just my $0.02, your mileage may vary.

I also appreciate the tip about underwear. My DD has many social challenges and so if there is something easy I can do to remove one more issue then I'll do it. I forgot about the changing for PE thing. Off to PINK we will go!

Nobody cared what type of underwear anyone wore when we changed for PE at school! I really doubt it's an issue. No need for expensive underwear just to impress a bunch of teenage girls.

I don't think that the cost of the undies were the issue: I think the advice was to give up the kind imprinted with cartoon characters if they are still being worn by that time.

(As for style and what people got teased for at my school way back when -- the answer was thongs on girls. Those drew negative attention any time they were noticed, and to be honest, I think they are unsuitable for the average 11 yo unless she is a dancer.)

I was the one who gave the underwear advice and I wasn't suggesting that anyone spend a lot. I honestly haven't bought DD17 any panties since we made the first trip to VS during their Summer sale and bought her first 7 or 8 pair for middle school. Once you are in their system, they send a coupon for free panties frequently- it seems like it's almost once a month. Those freebies have kept DD stocked for years.

If that doesn't work for you then Aerie has great sales. For bras, DD loves Target and Aerie. Again, hit up the sales and sign up for coupons at Aerie. I rarely have spent more than $15 for a bra for DD.

Middle School is the hardest. By high school, DD and her friends love Target and Forever 21. Of course, they also love Free People. I spend less now then I did in Middle school.

They don't need to "share" what kind they wear-most times you can see waistband over the top of the pants. And i do believe it was a topic of conversation one day. The guys all joke about other guys "urinal habits" too- which guys drop their pants to their knees rather than just pulling out their junk to take care of business. Who doesnt wash their hands etc. Where I work sexual harassment really isn't an issue-they still go by they"snitches get stitches " rule. If you do make a claim your life would be made miserable for the rest of your time there. If you are thin skinned sure not the place to work!

Aeropostale, Aeropostale, Aeropostale.....lol. My 13 year old's whole wardrobe consists of them! One of the very few "cool" stores that have remotely appropriate clothing! (and very budget friendly!)

I second the comments about waiting. Maybe put some $ aside, or buy gift certificates, but no lie, my daughter grew 6 whole inches this year! I was buying clothes every other month!

Around here, they seem to all "graduate" from Justice and into Rue21.

Mines making that transition now (12 going into 7th grade). We watch the clearance rack religiously :lmao:

I have never in my life seen a grown man (or one over about the age of 5) pull his pants down at the urinal. Someone must have a screw loose :rotfl2:

Boxers and I do not get along. They provide no support whatsoever. :(
