Cloth Diapering on a cruise

Hi Ex Techie - you are showing your ignorance about cloth diapering :) Most people DO hand wash/rinse poop off diapers prior to washing. If people would do their research before ripping out a knee jerk reaction this probably wouldn't even be an issue.

Ms. Kmix.

Regarding research, there has been a number of posts noting that the temp is not hot enough and the machine cyles do no clean the machine!

BTW.just where would a mom do this prewash.? There are no tubs in the laundries.

No this is simply a matter of common courtesy..........use whatever disposablies you wish.... a number of allergy free disposables have been named so that is not a issue either. Cloth diaper was just rude!

The feeling that seems to be prevalent on this thread is how defensive those who do or have CD'ed.

I for one are not against CD'ing at all. It's your child and your choice. And I completely understand that some disposable diapers cause irritation to some babies.

But, I think using public laundry machines to wash soiled diapers/underwear etc because you think it's alright is wrong and everyone else who chooses to use those machines afterward's have the right to not have to like it.
Whether or not you choose to use your own machine for that purpose is your choice.

Still waiting for someone to say what DCL think about it?

Maybe there should be a dedicated machine in each laundry for soiled clothing, and if your not bothered about using it for your other clothing, then are free to do so?

Ex Techie

I started the other thread! We CD and did on our 5 day Disneyland vacation. I used disposable Flips inserts, but we use Flips in heavy rotation anyway. I used BG at night which I just soaked and put in a wet bag. It wasn't ideal, but it worked.

I ended up deciding that I couldn't trust that there isn't a lot of nasty soap build-up in the public machines that would ruin my diapers, or at least make me need to strip them. So, we'll be using disposable.

I know it won't convince anyone, but it isn't liked you are putting a log of poop into the machine. It is a small amount left on the diaper, "track marks" It is a PUBLIC machine. I am sure there are lots of poo, pee, blood, vomit, and semen put in there every day. If that makes you squeamish, pack more clothes.

Since an outbreak of Norovirus is enough to send scores of people into quarantine on a cruise ship, and that (as well as E. Coli) can be spread via fecal matter, I would suspect DCL would not encourage dirty cloth diapers being washed in their laundry room machines. You can't even walk into a restaurant on board without sanitizing your hands.

If there is an "accident" in the pool, it has to be shut down and thoroughly scrubbed, a multi hours process.

I definitely would not wash my baby's cloth diapers in a public machine as I would never want to be responsible for spreading germs or disease due to the water not being hot enough to disinfect the machine afterwards.

JMHO.

I cloth diaper. I love cloth diapering (I'm a member of a cloth diapering community even!). However, I would NEVER take them on vacation or a cruise, or to any public facility. It is my choice to cloth diaper, and by using a public facility I feel as though I'm imposing my choice onto others.

You cannot know FOR SURE that nothing is left behind when using a washer. That's why, even with my fancy schmancy new front loader, I often find I have to rewash certain loads of my diapers. Sometimes all the poo doesn't come off. Sometimes there is residual soap. Sometimes the poo is gone but there is still ammonia stink. And I know just from being a part of a huge cloth diaper community that I am not the only one dealing with this problem.

Therefore, for that reason alone, I don't think you should cloth diaper on the cruise.

Have you used G diapers? If you have not, I HIGHLY suggest checking them out. They are super duper fantastic. I don't know what kind of CDs you use now, but G Diapers are essentially a cover and a prefold, only the prefold part is biodegradable. You basically just flush them. They are very nice, and I've never had a blowout in these because they fit like a cloth diaper. Go check them out: http://www.gdiapers.com/gdiapers101

I've found lots of starter kids on ebay too, if you don't want to shell out a bunch of cash just for the trip. However, since you can use them with cloth inserts as well, you might find that you just incorporate them into your stash.

Have a great cruise!

If you want to, please let us kowo what DCL said to you when you call to find out the rules.

You may choose to make other arrangements with diapering (G-dipes, hypoaller, etc), because you might not want to deal with the detergent left behind in those washers. You will likely have to strip your dipes when you get home!

I'm sorry you got so much hostility about this. Obviously there is a lot of ignorance out there about the CD process. Good luck with whatever you decide.

It has nothing to do with ignorance about the process, and has everything to do with people who don't agree with your opinion. Which they're entitled to. It's been said plenty of times that the washers don't get hot enough to completely kill bacteria, also, unless you're driving, the ship doesn't sell bleach, only detergent, so that isn't an option for a lot of people.

As a PP mentioned, norovirus is a cruise ship company's worst nightmare, and they go to great lengths to avoid it, so it may be that DCL doesn't allow cloth diapers to be washed in their laundry facility, or they may, until someone calls you won't know, but don't assume that people who disagree with you are ignorant of the process, you are fine with it, I reserve the right to be squidgy about it.

Kinda wondering what the dryer has to do with the washer being left dirty?

AKK

Most people dry their laundry after washing it. If people are freaking out that badly about the bacteria (any bacteria in the washers) they need to remember that the dryer will help mitigate the problem of rogue bacteria on their laundry.

FYI:

I just got off the phone with a DCL phone agent. She pulled up their page about Cloth Diapers, and this is verbatim what their page said

"There is not a dedicated diaper service available on-board the ship, but guests can choose to launder their own cloth diapers in the laundry facility, or choose to send them through our laundry service".

Both the CM and her supervisor confirmed this for me. They were not able to find the info on the DCL website, and they have forwarded a request to IT to add this info to the frequently asked questions- they've been getting a lot of calls in the past few months about this.

So Disney says NO PROBLEM

While the wash water may not be hot enough, the dryer certainly is

Once again, I strongly suggest you read this article http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellnes...ry?id=10751420

The dryer may take care of the cloth diapers but certainly not what you are leaving in the washer. You more than likely are going to be leaving something behind in that public washer.

I don't think anyone is arguing with your choice to cloth diaper. I choose to breastfeed my little one for a year. However I did not go topless in public feeding her because that would have been inconsiderate of other people and their children. The issue is being inconsiderate with your use of public facilities and causing a health risk. I would say the same thing to anyone considering putting clothes in a public washer on a cruise ship that had been puked or bled on.

Ummm....what about the stuff people don’t want to put in the dryer. Some things need to be hung up or laid flat to dry.

I think the whole argument is a moot point since Disney has said "no problem" at this point when I called in.

They had me ship an email to guest communications, so we SHOULD have an official answer in writing by the end of Monday.

As everyone knows DCL is OCD on sanitizing,as they should be:thumbsup2. So if they had ANY reason to believe that washing CDers onboard could cause disease or mass illness you can bet they would NOT be ok with it.So I completely agree:)

I don't know if they still make them but years ago they made a disposable liner that you could put in the diaper and then throw away when soiled.

Besides, honestly, we don't know what is being put in those washers. It could be anything.

What about buying one of those washer cleaning tablets and running it through after your load of diapers is done? It would cost you the price of a load but might be a thoughtful thing to do.

Ignorance is bliss :goodvibes You never know what was washed before your clothes so I would just not think about it too much. Because if you do you'll probably be really grossed out with all the possibilities...

What would you suggest that one does with clothes that have been puked or bled on? There should be no problem if one wishes to wash their cloth diapers on the cruise ship. I would have no problem whatsoever putting my clothes in the machine and using it after they did.

I would rinse it out, let it dry, put it in a bag and take it home to be cleaned in my own washer.
