Closing of It's A Small World : DL Rehab

Any DISers watch morning show today?

A co-worker heard something on a morning show today about IASW closing for adjustments because the boats are bottoming out. I googled and didn't come up with anything and my firend doesn't know the specifics.

Anybody have any info??

I saw the segment too. Yes they were talking about DisneyLand, not DisneyWorld, and they were saying that we tourists were just too heavy of a load for the boats:rotfl2:
It seems that they are going to have to make the canals deeper with water so that the boats dont bottom out as your coworker said.

They would never close it for good. The children and older adults love it too much. Its a timeless ride.

Its my Mothers favorite and the only thing she likes at Disney (except maybe for Mickey) :confused3 Where did I come from:confused3 Oh yeah, my fathers side.

They can't close down the FIRST Disney ride ever! They have to keep it, it would be a dishonour to Walt! I try and get my family to ride it when we go, but usally the queue it too long!!

Before everyone starts blaming poor eating habits and obesity for the problem, we need to consider some other factors, as well ....

The general population is TALLER than they were 50 years ago. Taller bodies are heavier bodies.

50 years ago there were no such things as health clubs. Well, they were VERY rare. Today, we have even retired senior citizens working out to improve their muscle tone. Today's fit anf trim senior citizens probably weigh 5 pounds more than their same-aged fit and trim counterparts 50 years ago due to increased musculature.

And then there's the upper middle class housewives. DO you know any SAHMs from six-figure-income households who DON'T work out at the gym or do Pilates or whatever??? (I know there are MANY others beyond that demographic, I'm just trying to illustrate a point). Today's fit and trim SAHMs probably weigh 5 ppounds more than their fit and trim counterparts from 50 years ago due to increased musculature.

And then there's also the Twinkie problem, sure ....;)

Thanks everybody!

I found the Disneyland IASW closure on allearsnet and hoped that was the dealio.

I leave for WDW Thursday and my DGM REALLY wants to ride IASW during her first trip to Disney. So let me breathe a great big ole WHEW!!

If it will help there really are not too many rides that have the capacity of IASW. A long looking line moves very fast. So tell your family that the line is no where near as long as it appears.

I agree it is a classic, low tech, mind numbing ride (because of the song) but it is a must do on every visit.

They can't close down the FIRST Disney ride ever!

its a small world was created in 1963-64 for the '64 New York Worlds Fair.
It was moved from the NY Worlds Fair to Disneyland and opened there in the Spring of 1966.

But, the Disneyland park opened in the Summer of 1955.

So, unless Disneyland guests just stood around in small discussion groups for the most part of a decade, awaiting the first attraction,
I don't think iasw could qualify as "the FIRST Disney ride ever."

;)

IASW WDW was just under rehab in 2005. I was worried for a minute. :scared1: This is one of my dd favorite rides. We rode in 4 or 5 times during our last trip. I can still hear that song in my head..

There's some rides that are just too classic for Disney to ever close down...and it's a small world is one of them! I know a lot of people think it's the most annoying ride in the world, but to me a trip to Disney just isn't complete without riding it at least once!

I agree with you.

OMG!! One year we went when it was closed and it opened two weeks after we came back. Last time we went and thankfully we were able to see the new and improved IAMW.

If we go next year and it's closed my family is going to have a breakdown.

I don't think they are closing it for good. Since they rehabbed the one at WDW it's been even more popular. In fact, I kinda like it and I never really liked it before.

I think they are just closing it for rehab and this is some Internet rumor out of control.

IASW is just to much of a classic for Disney to close down. If they do happen to, wonder what they will add.

As stated several times.. the Today show piece was about the IASW at DisneyLAND in Anaheim.

The IASW in Florida was just rehabbed in 2005 and is just fine. Neither is in danger of permanent shutdown at this time.

:)

I've merged these two very similar threads.

While on my way to a game yesterday a story came on the radio about a rehab to be performed on "it's a small world". It sounded as if they are going to add water to the attraction, and also replace the boats with lighter ones. Story stated adults are on average 25 pounds heavier than when the ride first opened, and it is causing some problems with the ride. Time frame was 10 months, beginning in January '08.

Has anyone else heard about this? If true, I'm wondering why that would take 10 months, unless other changes will be made also. And I'm sure hoping it goes quicker than that, as for our next trip, I would guess iasw would be a big hit with of youngest son.

I haven't heard anything about this, but on one of our trips a couple of years ago it was shut down for a major rehab when they redid all the "kids". If they were going to do something like this, I think they would have done it all at the same time.

Yes...this is true...but the story is about DISNEYLAND, not Walt Disney World.

Yeah, it was about 2 or 3 years ago now that that rehab happened, and I thought the same thing. Dad and I were pretty surprised when the story came on the radio yesterday. He's going with us and said he was looking forward to seeing his grandsons on that ride in particular as he's seen DS3's videotaped reactions while on the ride.
