Closest full supermarket to the boardwalk

We will be needing some more specialized groceries for our next trip to BWV and I was wondering what the closest full supermarket would be. Also, any idea how much cab fare might run?

TIA

I'm not sure the absolute closest. We normally do the Wal Mart at 535 & Oceola from BWV. I think it's just over 4 miles IIRC. The Publix at Orange Lake, Publix at Celebration and Super Target are probably around the same distance/time. WM and the best route to the Orange Lake area involve a toll to get to directly from BWV.

I have used that Walmart too. I had a car from BWV, I used Buena Vista to 536 to 535 with no toll. When I stayed at AKV, I found out the hard way that there is a toll on the Osceola Parkway with no change.

Hmm, from the BW, I think I might just go south on World Drive to 192 West and right before Toll Road 429, on your left, behind a Bahama Breeze restaurant (can't remember what the other restaurant next to it is..) is a big SuperTarget. NO tolls if you go this way.

For that route, I'd go to the Publix Celebration or at Orange Lake, if I wanted to avoid the toll.

World Drive will get you to 192 but if that's the one I wanted (or the Orange Lake Publix across the street, I'd go out the back way from Animal Kingdom. I'd have to look at the distances to Celebration from BWV, one could go either out Oceola and take a right turn close to the Gaylord (not toll at that point) or out World Drive and go east.

Thanks very much for all the great info! It looks like there are definitely options but none of them super close. If the cab fare runs that high then we may just go ahead and rent a car. Am I the only one who hates parking a rental car at the Boardwalk? LOL Could rent for a day from Alamo at the Dolphin but that seems like an even bigger hassle. Will have to run the numbers on $$ and see what is the most cost effective, least time consuming.

Thanks again for the speedy response, folks... can always count on the DIS!

We are partial to the Publix on 192 near maingate, pass the AKL. We often make AK our morning park and leave around noonish and zip over the publix there, then head back to the BWV. That's our plan for this Saturday. We always have a rental car.

We find that Public and Target on US192 West of maingate (just before FL 429) is easiest for traffic and time - just 10 minutes away. And good selection. If we need Wal-Mart selection we go further west and turn right at US27. Just a few minutes farther.

Have you ever used Uber? It's typically cheaper than a cab.

The Publix at Regency Village is the one we usually go to from OKW, over by the Outlet Mall and Mary Queen of the Universe. And the Winn-Dixie on Apopka-Vineland (just past Miller's Ale House on 535) are close to SSR, OKW and Disney Springs.

Those Publix stores are really nice, I wish they had stores here. For a grocery store the beer selection is outstanding. :earsboy:

Yeah Dean, that is the way I would personally go but I live here. I thought going out Osceola Pkwy and out by the AKL entrance could be confusing for a visitor. Thus my recommendation.

I live super close to the Publix in Celebration and am NOT a fan. Cab fare from BWV maybe maybe might be a tad less than going out to the Publix or SuperTarget right before tollway 429...

Would one of the grocery delivery services work for you? That vs renting a car could probably be very comparable or even cost less.

IMO it's a good idea of DVC members to learn that back way by AKV. From the BWV area I'd take Buena Vista Drive like I was going to the AKL then take a left at the light just before the guard gate for AKL on Sherberth Rd. It's likely not any shorter than just going out World Drive and going west on 192 but it cuts off a lot of traffic and lights, esp if you take Black Lake Rd West about 100 ft before Sherberth runs into 192.

I hear you, Dean. But that curvy Sherberth Rd goes all over the place and has way too many turnoffs that can be confusing. I believe it would save no more than 3 traffic lights. For those of us that live here, no biggie. For folks that don't, I don't want to confuse them. Vacations are too short as it is. :sad2:

That is our preferred way to go shopping and yes, while Sherberth is quite curvy I can't say that I ever found it confusing. If you go to 192 it's pretty obvious where you should turn IMO. And I'm just finally figuring out some of driving around WDW! Really need to look at a map sometime. :rotfl:

I recommend to always look at a one way rental car from the airport to the Dolphin. We are going next month for the W&D half and I secured a one way intermediate rental for $46 with all fees. For me that is worth it as I don't have to wait for the magical express and I can stop on the way to the resort to get our groceries. Sometimes it is cheaper to pickup at the Dolphin and return there with a one day rental so check both. I use Costco Travel to book rental cars most of the time.
