Does anyone know the closest Catholic Church to the Downtown Disney Area? I found a listing on www.masstimes.org, but there are so many and I don't know which is closest. Thanks!

Mary Queen of the Universe is just down the street from DTD. You can easily see it from I4.

Mary Queen of the Universe is definitely the closest and is really where you should go as it was built specifically for guests visiting in Orlando. From Downtown Disney take Hotel Plaza Blvd to SR-535. Turn right onto SR-535 and get into the left lane. You will go under I-4 and then make a left turn at the first traffic light after the underpass onto Vineland Avenue. Mary, Queen of the Universe will be on your right just under a mile up Vineland. :)

Speaking of services, anyone know why Disney eneded having them on site?
It was nice and convienent, especially when staying at the Poly!

great! I was wondering this too, I shall be in attendence this summer!

AllEars recommends them too:

Yep Mary Queen of the Universe is very near to the DTD area. We got there every time during a sat\sun trip!! It's very nice but very big as well.

Be prepared for the Priest to ask everyone where they came from.. becomes a bit annoying after you've seen more than 5 Masses there.

Very nice.

Does anyone kow if that is the closest to Orange Lake CC or to Animal Kingdom? Thanks. Leaving in 2 days

I found Mary Queen of the Universe to be kind of an annoyance. Like a previous poster mentioned, the priest aksed everyone where they were from. There was so much time spent on the history of the shrine and the rationale behind building it that I found it took away from the Mass. There are so many people attending on a Sunday morning that it's difficult to get in and out of the parking lot. Don't get me wrong, I think it's wonderful that they built this beautiful shrine to the Blessed Mother, and that they have a place to accomodate all of the tourists wanting to get to Mass, but I found the priest's presentation irritating. Holy Family is almost as close. I'll be going there next time instead. http://www.holyfamilyorlando.org/

I Know that Place Very Well..In fact that is where i go to church when i am there
in WDW :umbrella:

I certainly don't know my way around Orlando, but I really don't believe that Holy Family Church is anywhere near WDW. Back in June we took a taxi from the Boardwalk to Holy Family for the 5pm Saturday Mass. The driver had to call his office for directions. It seemed to me to be a long way from WDW. It cost me $30-$35 each way...plus tip (the driver was kind enough to wait for us and brought us back to the Boardwalk).
The Church was very nice and we enjoyed the Mass, but I found that it was way too far unless you have your own car.

I know what you mean! I live in Orlando and the church that you mentioned, is far from Disney, because it is in the Dr. Phillips/Windemere area. It is not that close to Universal Orlando. Most of the Catholic Churches are in the Metro Orlando, but for the Disney area, that would be Mary Queen Of The Universe. However, there is one, near the Florida Mall and is the ST John Vianney Parish. You may check it at: http://www.sjvorlando.org/

Well, after seeing the traffic jam that Mary Queen of the Univese causes I have resolved NEVER to set foot in there or give them a penny (Since I am not Catholic that's not a big resolution, but...)

Sunday they allowed the ENTIRE parking lot to empty while they "held" traffic on Vineland Road. IT was backed up all the way to the interstate due to this! (I understand they need a cop to let folks out, but this was out of line... you let folks go.) They would let a few cars go on Vineland but as soon as ONE car showed up to leave the sevice traffic was stopped and held while any other cars the cop could see in the parking lot wandered to the exit. It was beyond rude!)

Well, it's hardly the church's fault! Every morning we have a cop directing traffic at the four-way stop - some of them are good at it and some of them are just horrible. Direct your anger where it belongs - at the cop doing the directing.

Since you aren't Catholic, I'm guessing you couldn't get into the outlet mall! ;) The traffic is very bad right there when there are services - when I need to get to the outlet mall on a Sunday I go one more exit and come in from behind.

:)

We have a fairly comprehensive list on the DIS: Churches

Hope this is helpful. :flower: :flower: :flower:

Actually I was coming from the Publix and really had no problem... And I am directing at the Shirne since I happen to have friends who are cops and they tell me that generally this kind of thing happens when the folks paying them tell them to do it. These cops were off duty and working for the Shrine... (The Baptist church near me does this too and I have called them at least twice to complain that I was late for my service because the MEGA church showed no consideration. They actually told me that they tell the cops to empty thier lot since "most folks on that road are there to come to our second service" ARROGANT!)
