(CLOSED) The Smoking DSA's @ Resorts Info Thread

Now that all resort rooms at WDW are non-smoking, I'm a little worried about ending up in a room that used to be a smoking room. Has anybody experienced being in a room that still has a strong smell? Or do you think they did a pretty good job getting the smell out?

Thanks!

AggieTexan and Mary2e, I hope you have a great trip. I am interested in the DSA :smokin: for the Yacht Club too. We are staying there in Feb. Again I hope you have a great trip :goodvibes .

I have a question - being a heavy smoker - my clothes and other things, I am sure smell of smoke. I have not smoked in a OKW room or balcony for the last three years, but I am sure my things smell. Should the renter after me notice the smell - will Disney then charge me the cleaning fee even though I haven't and won't smoke in the room?? Just a thought - - remember we smokers carry the smell with us!!
I was thinking the same thing. Im not a smoker but my dad is a heavy smoker and Im sure the blankets and pillow cases in his room will smell(although my mom will probably bring her own pillowcases) i would hate to see them try and charge my dad a cleaning fee just because he smells like smoke. I really dont think they could do so with out proof, but I dont want him getting upset at checkout.

I think it's a good thing that WDW is trying to provide DSA's. Many places are no smoking and don't provide anywhere to smoke. I also think it's nice that DSA's are being put on the maps. I'm a former smoker and the slighest whiff of smoke makes me sneeze like crazy. So I try my best to avoid smoking areas, because if it gets on my clothes or hair I sneeze all day. But I do agree that since WDW implemented this policy they should make sure that there are covered areas for those who do smoke. But that they should be located in an area where they can be avoided if one so chooses.

Very nice handling of this sometimes inflammatory topic. (Get it..inflammatory...smoke...cigarettes) :rotfl:
Really, everyone has been very curteous and I'm very pleasantly suprised.

Bus stops: There are two ashtrays in sight of the bus stops: one near the MGM stop and one near the far end. It is unclear if these are actually DSAs, as they are not indicated as such on the map. However, I think it is reasonable to assume that if an ashtray is provided, you are allowed to smoke there. I did have a person get in line behind me at the bus stop smoking. Even cranky DH wouldn't do that. ;)

I can answer more questions if anyone would like.

Those ashtrays near the bus stops mounted to the poles have been there since the resort was built. I would just imagine that they haven't gotten around to removing them yet.

I didn't know if anyone knew the answer to this one yet or not. I assume Disney is doing an overhaul gradually of all the previously dubbed "smoking" rooms but I can't imagine it being done completely by the time we go in mid-August. My daughters are both asthmatic and have awful flare-ups around stale cigarette smoke/smell.... we HAD a guaranteed non-smoking room for our trip prior to the new policy being even mentioned. My concern is that we might be put up in a room that was previously a smoking room and has not yet undergone the thorough cleaning. Does anyone know what Disney is doing about this? I'd just hate to check in and then be told that there are no other vacancies left if we were placed in a prior-smoking room. Of course this is the first time we went through AAA as well so I can't call CRO directly to have it noted on my reservations  Thanks in advance for your help! :)

I was at BWV 2 weeks ago checked in May 30 , we had requested a smoking room before the change. We were last non smoking room at the end of the hallway. I was curious if we had an old smoking room with a new N/S sign or what. All of the rooms past ours to the end of the hallway ( maybe 16-20 rooms ) were out of commission. All the doors were propped open the whole time we were there, 5 days . It seemed like they had done a power wash of the room ( not exactly, I know ) washed the carpet and linens and generally cleaned room and they had doors opened to dry them out. Of course this was just me sticking my head in the door and feeling the carpet and sniffing around. When we were leaving all the cleaned out rooms did have N/S signs on them too.

Does anyone know if any of the DSAs at POP are covered? We will be there the end of July early August and the rain that time of year can be awful! Just wondering if we may be better off to stay off site.

No, they are not, with the exception of the bus stop DSAs, which may or may not really be DSAs.

There are no DSA signs by the bus stops on the resort maps so I would say that they are not DSAs

I'd suggest you insist on having someone sent from the front desk to your room upon check-in to affirm the room was "clear" and to "note" on your ressie that a member of your party may own/pocess clothing etc.., that COULD lead to a 'false-positive' reading at the conclusion of your stay.
Does anyone else have a different/better suggestion???

I honestly don't know how else you would do it.

I can understand having a CM check the room when we check-in - but after six weeks of staying in the room - what can we do then. I have written to Guest Services regarding this issue. I will post their reply. As I stated I haven't smoked in our room for almost three years - but would never tell a lie - I do smoke outside. According to my family - my hair, clothes, eyelashes, etc. all smell of smoke - I do think they exagerate!!!

Holy crap.. you're stayin in a room for 6 weeks?

Knox

That's right Canadian Guy - so you can see why I am worried. In six weeks some smell of smoke is bound to be in the room. Also - I don't really like smoking on the balaconies - don't know why - guess I hate the sound of the blinds banging around. So I have always smoked in front of the building, which is now a DSA - I have always referred to it as the lobby. But, I will wait and see what Guest Services has to say. And, yup, six weeks and love every minute of it. OKW is the best!!

Simple - Ask to switch rooms 3 weeks in

Wouldn't we (and cc1075) need to know how long it takes the residual oders to affect a room to know how long anyone with any active (or recent) smokers could inhabit a room before those oders imparted to the room in such a way so as to render it an infraction of the smoke free rule?
Could it not be possible that the rules might detect the smell of smoke in a room after only a few days of being occupied by someone who is a heavy smoker but who also follows the rules?? ..even after having it "cleared" upon check-in :confused3
...again:

...but I simply don't know!????...does anyone yet have any experience with this that they can share?

Basically I think that the leftovers on clothes and hair and skin wouldn't be significant enough to set off the detectors*. because they would be absorbed mainly by the bedspread, sheets and pillow and eventually washed off.. so maybe some left on towels.

These are trace amounts... and those items would be changed out over a six week period.. daily. Even the bedspread should get changed at the 4 week mark.

I'm a smoker and recently stayed in a room at CSR after the new policy took effect. I smoked at the DSA's several times and then immediately afterwards proceeded directly to my room. I was not fined anything.. so whatever residual was on me wasn't enough to cause any concern.

I think sometimes we tend to over analyze things on the DIS and I do believe this falls under that category.

* And the ionization detection gear (or whatever they use) wouldn't even be brought in unless someone smelled SMOKE or saw direct evidence of smoking in the room. And if it was.. it would register only trace amounts. Not the LARGE amounts that would show up if you actually smoked in the room. Residual smoke smell generally tends to the follow the person and not linger indefinitely in a room -- provided they have not smoked in the room.
