(CLOSED) The Smoking DSA's @ Resorts Info Thread

Has anyone stayed at the Wilderness Campground Homes? I would like confirmation that smoking is indeed permitted outside on the porch. It is time for me to book my ressies for February and I am thinking about giving these homes a try if smoking is permitted on the porch. I stayed at SSR last February and I felt it was not very vacation-like to have to have to leave my villa and go to have my morning coffee and cigarette and my bed-time tea and cigarette in the DSA. Those 2 cigarettes are very important to me and I so wish I could smoke them on my balcony but since that is not to be I am hoping for a front porch. Any info would be appreciated. If permitted, are the homes far enough away from each other so that my smoke would not bother the neighboring home occupants?

Did you look at the Smoking-areas Maps 'sticky' thread? It has individual maps of each resort, showing the smoking areas AND stating somewhere on the map where else (if anywhere) smoking is permitted. For example, in addition to the DSAs at Old Key West and Saratoga Springs, there is an ashtray and usually a bench outside EVERY building.

If smoking is permitted on the unit's porch at Fort Wilderness Cabins, that WILL be stated somewhere on the map.

It is not stated on the Ft. Wilderness map, but smoking is most definitely permitted on the porches of the Ft. Wilderness Cabins and at the individual campsites. I got this direct from the Executive Offices of the Walt Disney World Resort in an email.

"While smoking is not permitted inside cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, smoking is allowed on cabin porches, at campsites, and in the designated outdoor smoking locations throughout the resort.

Thank you so much for the information.

I find it rude that Shades of Green guests get a different policy in regards to smoking: Here it is:
Smoking Policy. The entire facility, to include pool areas, is smoke free. If the smoke free policy is violated in the guest rooms, a penalty will be incurred. Smoking is permitted on the guest room balconies and patios as long as the door is closed.

Now why is that? I like the fact Disney has a private resort for Military members, but why is the policy different there? I'm sorry if this post breaks the mod's definition of discussing the policy itself, however, I think this topic is fair because it deviates from the original policy that covers all disney resorts.

Shades of Green is not a Disney Resort. It has been leased to the Department of Defense and is operated by them. Their policies, bussing, room rates are governed by them - not Disneyl

Ahh interesting! I couldn't find that.
Makes me wonder about the Four Seasons they are building on the property too. Almost all FS provide smoking rooms (excluding Hawaii where it is prohibitive by law).

My experiences with the DSA in the parks have always been good, I haven't had an issue finding one except one that was on the map at AK but wasn't there anymore. I smoked there anyway. It was on the map! More importantly it was a good location, away from crowds and the possibility of too many people sniffing it.

I wish military ruled at Pop and I could smoke on the balcony!!:lmao:

Problem would be that you won't have a balcony at POP - you will have a walk way that others use and where your smoke could be sucked into the room next door through the air system

I think it's pretty clear for all of us smokers that some resorts are better for us than others. The two/three level hotels are clearly better for access to a DSA such as GF, YC, Poly, CR and the Cheap category.
Obviously, more difficult resorts would include the high rises like CR, Swan and Dolphin where it may be a hike to go out the door, down the elevator and through a lobby to get to a DSA. I think also some resorts would be better to make smoking rooms available such as multi-complexes.
With the economy slumping, it will be interesting if they switch their policy making a few places available with smoking rooms. The question is can disney manage room inventory online to choose such request? IHG does the best job, go look at holidayinn.com or any of their hotels. It clearly shows what rooms are available at that time (NS, SMK).
Disney should invest in this area of reservations handling.

For anyone wondering about staying at the ASSp, we just got back last night. There are three smoking areas at the hotel - one behind the main pool, one in the middle of the resort at middle circle with the Mickey statue and one behind the hedge at the bleachers behind the baseball pool.

If you can get pool-front rooms at building 1 or 6 (the Surf's Up buildings), the main smoking area behind the main pool is within view. We stayed at Bldg 6 and I had no trouble keeping an eye on our room door (my husband was in the room with our boys, but I'm paranoid LOL).

There were a lot of really nice people at the smoking areas - my 9yo son even has a new pen-pal with a girl in Indiana now :goodvibes

Ok help here... I think over the past 2 day I have read this entire thread looking for info.... Wow, long thread.... I still do not know if there are smoking areas at the Dolphin or Swan...

Can anyone give me some insight? Are there smoking areas, and is one hotel any better than the other for smoking areas?? This the hotel(s) that I would prefer to book, still if another Disney hotel is more tolerant of smokers I might just go in that direction....

Many thanks in advance, this can be quite confusing

Swan is smoke-free and Dolphin still has smoking rooms. At least their website indicates they do.

I read on the Dolphins website the the hotel is smoke free... They do say on the site though that there are smoking areas, so that is fine. I will try to book a lower level floor.

We go on quite a few cruises where many of the lines do allow smoking on balconies. I have heard from many non smokers that the smoke does travel to the next balcony making it uncomfortable for them to use thier balcony. This may explain why many of the hotels chose to include the balconies as non smoking areas.

How are the DSAs at AKL? I see on the map they only have 3. We are staying in a Savannah view and not sure how far they would be. Does anyone have first-hand experience with AKL?

The map in incorrect. There are only 2 now. The one on the walkway by Mara and the pool bar are gone. The DSA's only only at the entrance (toward the right as your facing the Lodge and way in the back in between the playground and spa.

I stayed at the Dolphin this past summer. The only smoking areas I found (meaning there was an ash tray) were at the front entrance (next to a bench), on the walkway towards the bus area, and outside the back entrance by the ice cream shop to the left and right. Also, at the pool bar table area I asked the waitress if I could smoke (we were the only people eating) and she gave me an ashtray. YMMV!!!

Thanks Tink...
So here is what I learned...
I made a reservation at the Dolphin. We are only staying 2 days and will not be just laying back much at the hotel much. I was interested in the least expensive room, which was $159.00 per night....

I asked the reservations guy about smoking and he suggested we take a ground floor room with easy access to smoking area, which was $230.00 a night with pool views... Ok, more to have an easy access to a smoking area, but it seemed like a good idea so we went for it...
