This triple layer skirt is really easy to make. There is an ebook YCMT but I did not use it this time. I just winged it.
My Waistband is 7 inches by 1.5 x waist measurement. Hannah's waist is 22 so her waistband is 33 inches. I fold the waist over so it ends up being 3 inches after seems and serging. Serge one long side of the waistband and the turn right sides together and sew to make a tube/circle.
I wanted the skirt to come to her knee. Keep in mind Hannah has very long legs so from waist to top of the knee is 15 inches. There are three layers to the skirt. Each layer is 90 inches long. To figure out how to long to make each layer you just do a little math.
Total length 15 inches - Waistband length 3 inches = 12 inches.
My bottom layer is 90" x 12"
My middle layer is 90" x 9"
My top layer is 90" x 6"
Sew each layer right sides together to make a circle or tube. Finish your hems however you like. I used binding tape. Then you place the layers one on top of the other. I serge the three layers together at the top to make gathering easier. Next gather the skirt. I used the gathering stitch on my machine but the zig zag over dental floss method is really good for this skirt.
A great trick to know how much to gather is this. . . Measure you waistband when it is flat. Mine was about 16 inches. So I knew that when I was gathering my skirt I needed to make it 16 inches (laying flat). Then I tie the bottom and the top thread together to lock in my gathers.
The waistband is not super tricky and ends up looking really nice. Take the waistband tube and place it over the skirt right sides together. The raw edge of the waistband should match up with the gathered edge of the skirt. Pin and sew in place.
1. Fold over the waistband to the inside of your skirt. You want to cover your seem. Pin in place and PRESS!!
2. Then top stitch 1/8th" from the top of the skirt. That gives it a very professional look.
3. I use 3/4" elastic so I next measure an inch from the top of the skirt. I sew a channel at the one inch mark leaving a three inch opening. Then I do the same for the bottom seem (where the waist and skirt meet). I top stitch along the seem closing all of the gathering underneath. I leave the same thee inch opening.
4. Then I insert my elastic, sew the elastic together and stitch close the openings.
5. Finally I top stitch across the elastic. I pull the elastic and sew down the center. It insures the elastic will not twist once the skirt is being worn.
Here are a couple pics. I will remember to take pics of the whole process next time.
Here is what the skirt looks like after you sew the waistband. Between step 1 and 2.
This is what it looks like on the inside between step 1 and 2.
