 Love the pics... Water looks so calm.....:boat: Makes me want to be there...::yes::
Thanks! I'm not a morning person and at home it's so hard to get out of bed lol but it's worth it when you're at the Wilderness Lodge!

"Hope it's ok"? Those photos are beyond OK, they're grrrrrrrreat! Thanks so much for making our day and post here anytime, disney newb:goodvibes

Thanks Kook! Didn't want to be hogging too much board space lol

I've heard people talk about the Mickey waffles at Roaring Forks and WOW they are awesome! I tried all three and all were delicious but Banana Fosters was my fav :) yum!! I've never had Mickey Waffles before...maybe I've never had proper waffles before?haha but they were made fresh right before our very eyes and were soft and.. just awesome!

Mimi left us the same type of thing in our room. It was very nice, although it scared us to death when we first walked in thinking someone was in the bed. She was a great mousekeeper. Maybe we will get her on monday when we check in.

The day we arrive is a non park day. We want to go to Downtown Disney after getting settled since it will be a non park day for us. How long will it take us to take the bus there or should we plan on a taxi?

I just wanted to stop by in here. I had my first stay at Wilderness Lodge, during my first Christmas time trip this past weekend. It was truly amazing. I am a DVC Member that owns at BLT but will def be looking at a VWL contract now.

It also helps that I proposed to my girlfriend on the roof of the Wilderness Lodge on Friday morning! So needless to say, we both have a special bond with the resort now and are hoping to stay there every year during this time of year!

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that answered all of my questions. My two kids and I had a great stay. We checked in Friday, checked out Tuesday, and we really loved it. We hope to stay there again! We had a room on the 6th floor not too far from the lobby elevator. I could see the electrical water pageant from the balcony, but obviously the better view was down at the beach, so we did that one night.

We ate at Whispering Canyon, the ketchup bit is hilarious! My son is on the autism spectrum though, and I had to gesture to the server that we didn't need any. He doesn't like to be the center of attention at all. But the food was great! Roaring Forks was great too. We ate there a few times, because we aren't the type to sit down in full service restaurants, and eat for a long period of time.

We took advantage of the kids club activities, arcade, the pools each day, and the marshmallow roasting. It was so peaceful and relaxing.

Seems there was a bug or something going around there though. I overheard many families on the boat/bus talking about their kids vomiting all night. I was queasy most of the trip. My kids were fine though, and we shared a lot of drinks from the bottles of water/soda so I'm chalking it up to either food somewhere in the world, or the tap water (I took a couple of sips from the fountain).

Between the time of the year and the amount of people there, it is inevitable that colds, viruses and other nasties are prevalent around there. We usually bring about 10 bottles of the mini hand sanitizers and a package of wipes that you can easily throw in your purse and backpacks. My DW and I always had 2 on hand at all times. Whenever we finish a ride we use it - finish riding the boat or monorail we use it. The kids complained a little at first, but after the first day we just got used to it and I'm sure it helps reduce the risk. Of course there are people coughing and sneezing everywhere so there isn't much you can do about that. But lets face it, when you are around that many people, there is a decent chance of catching something.

The water in Orlando isn't that great (having lived there), but it isn't going to make you sick. I'd say you probably had a greater chance of catching something from just touching the fountain rather than drinking the water coming out of it. It just doesn't have a great taste to it. Since we drive, we always bring a flat of bottled water. Soda officionados will probably notice the difference in taste.

Glad you had a good time!

Oh we definitely sanitize after every ride, wipe down the airplane tray tables, wash our hands frequently, amp up the vitamin D and C etc. etc. I brought my own water in my suitcase but was parched standing in that Woody line, and mine was back at the stroller! I packed small bottles of water in my suitcase (and wrapped in plastic bags before anyone jumps on me about their luggage getting soaked )

Someone did mention on the bus that the amount of minerals in the water there can make a person a sick who isn't used to that in their own tap water. That sick? Who knows. Ahh, but I did drink a few fountain drinks like the tea, and diet soda. Perhaps that is why I felt sick to my stomach (no vomiting though) Who knows!

We had a fabulous time at the WL and enjoyed the CL again. We do enjoy the extra perks and think it's worth it. Below is a summary of our trip relating to WL. Even though I list some cons or things that seem negative, they aren't really complaints and didn't take away from the enjoyment, I'm just noting them for informational purposes. This was our best trip, for many reasons so again nothing below is meant as a true "complaint". It was our first trip back in 4 years.

We got room 7043 which is all the way at the end on the north wing which was what we requested. It is a bunk bed room facing the inner courtyard.

Pros:
  • Closest room to the elevator that goes down by Roaring Forks, thus quickest access to the boat dock (and obviously RF)
  • Quiet, since it is on the end
  • No shared balcony
  • Nice view of the waterfall (although like all CL rooms, this is mitigated by the solid wall that you can't see through when you are sitting down). Kids had to climb on chairs to see out

Cons:
  • Farthest room from the lounge. If you are making a lot of trips back and forth to the lounge, it's a good deal of walking (comparitively speaking of course)
  • Farthest room from the main lobby and busses. If you are heading anywhere to the south wing you are the farthest away. If you are taking the boats to the MK, TTC, or Contemporary, the room is the closest. If you are driving your car or taking a bus, the room is the farthest.
  • You are unable to see the last 3 or 4 boats of the Electric Water Parade because of the angle of the room (blocked by trees)

Also, while you can't see the MK fireworks directly from the balcony since you are facing the pool, you are just a few short steps to the end of the hallway by the elevator where you can open the shutters and look out the window to see them just the same as everyone else that is facing the MK. It's just as good in my opinion especially since you can situate yourself perfectly to not be blocked by the trees.

Cast Members - Check in was easy as always and it seemed to be the same crew for the beginning part of the week. The women were much more friendly and knowledgeable than the guys. The guys would give the courtesy hello, but the women also were more likely to try to have a conversation and especially talk to our kids. Gianna in particular was one CM who really stood out. She was fantastic. So was Bonnie. Unfortunately they didn't seem to be there toward the end of the week when it seemed to be a different crew almost every day which made it hard to have a rapport with any of them like we had in the beginning of the trip.

Mercantile - Not their fault but every year we go during December and every year it's the same thing - the WL shirts are always sold out in XL and a lot of the 2012 merchandise is gone and replaced with 2013 stuff. Of course they always give me the shirt id code and give me a phone number to call to try to order it but they said people are constantly asking for the shirts yet they hadn't had them in that size for months. I don't understand why their merchandising dept. hasn't figured out the problem after all these years.

WCC - We did this for dinner on our anniversary. I ordered a custom cake from Brian at the Contemporary (which was AWESOME) to be delivered after dinner. The DW and kids were thoroughly surprised and everyone kept coming over to look at it. I guess they changed the menu since we were last there because now it's just one flat price for a skillet of various meats. It was OK, but we weren't overly impressed. We did enjoy the ketchup thing and everyone singing to us for our anniversary, but for the price we didn't think it was worth it. We wouldn't go back again.

Roaring Forks - We were hoping to get some new WL all you can drink cups, but didn't like the look of the new ones so we passed on that. The food there seemed much better than the last time from what we remember. There was a panini sandwich we had that was really good. One night the chef special was a buffalo chicken flatbread pizza - that was out of this world! Even though we only went there a few times because of all the free food on the CL, I would give it a thumbs up. The selection and food quality seemed much better than in years past.

Lounge food - Pretty much all the breakfast/snack/dinner/dessert stuff was what we remember so it doesn't seem like they changed much over the years. It seemed the cordial selection was a little less than what I remember. The one thing I wish they'd improve is the desserts. It's always a cobbler (berry, apple, or apple+berry), brownies, magick bars, and chocolate chip cookies. I can't believe they can't change that up somehow. The cobbler is great because they are always changing it, but I wish they had a better variety of the other treats. By the end of the week even my two young kids were asking if they had anything else because they were burned out on the cookies (and that is saying something). If only they would serve ice cream with that cobbler... Kook you need to put in a request for that. :)

Mousekeeping - Being at the end of the hall meant our room got cleaned last, which worked out good especially for the days we wanted to sleep in. Every day they left neat little towel animals and the big treat coming home from a day at the park was the kids being excited to see how they arranged all the stuffed animals we had bought. They usually had the TV turned on with everyone snuggled up together on the bed and Mickey holding the remote. Every day was something different so it was just a nice little added surprise every day to look forward to.

Buses and boats ran quick. We didn't really have to wait long for anything. I'm not sure the purpose of sharing a bus going to Blizzard Beach and Animal Kingdom since no one was going to Blizzard Beach. Maybe it makes more sense in the summer.

We did hit the pool one afternoon and it was nice because it wasn't too crowded. One of the lifeguards told us that our youngest one looked to be struggling a little bit coming off the slide and swimming to the other side. He said he was looking tired and would have to wear a life jacket if he continued to look tired. Mainly this was from him being lazy and not swimming the way he should and not being in the pool for several months. Once we told him he'd have to put one on, he did much better. We appreciated that the life guard was attentive enough to keep an eye on him to remark on that and thanked him. They seemed very attentive at the pool, perhaps because there were so few people there that it was easy to keep an eye on everyone. I can't imagine what it would be like over the summer.

It did seem more crowded at the Lodge than in previous years and when I asked they said there were only 1 or 2 rooms open so I guess that's why discounts seem harder and harder to come by and the secret is out about how great the WL is during the holidays.

IMHO there just isn't a comparison to WL especially during the holidays. Nothing is a close second. It was a magical stay as always mostly thanks to rubbing Humprey's nose at the start of our visit to ensure the magic follows us around. :thumbsup2

If anyone has any questions let me know.
What a great review - thank you for posting it. Your comments will help many who haven't stayed at WL yet and even those who have. I love reading others' opinions/experiences about WDW Resorts:goodvibes

Ah, ice cream and cobbler:cloud9:. A soft serve machine sure would be nice (heck, I'd like one in my room!), but like the one down in RF, I imagine it could get messy fast:confused3. Variety is the spice of life and I'm all for mixin' up those CL desserts a bit, too. CL fare is fine for a few days, but when you stay a long time, it can get old fast.

Thanks for all of the pictures and the comments. We are staying at WL for four nights in late January. It will be our first time there as a family and the first time our kids have been to DW. Our kids are 4 and 6.5. Our original reservation was at POFQ, but two weeks ago I decided to upgrade us. I really struggled with the decision, but felt I would have regretted it if we did not. I've always wanted to stay at the Old Faithful Inn @ Yellowstone. Anyway, I think my kids are going to LOVE WL. My kids don't even know we are going to DW yet...we are surprising them on Christmas morning. The older one has been wanting to go for sometime now.
:welcome: to the DIS and the WL/VWL thread! What an amazing surprise! Santa outdid himself this year:santa:. Your family is going to love WL:love:

Arcade: FYI go redeem the arcade voucher for a neat souvenir! We got Wreck it Ralph themed card :)

Beautiful - thanks! I hope you didn't get an 'additional adult' charge on your invoice:laughing:. I think I would have been a bit shocked to find 'him' waiting for us - he didn't order in-room dining, did he?

Thanks! I'm not a morning person and at home it's so hard to get out of bed lol but it's worth it when you're at the Wilderness Lodge!

Now you've got me hungry! "Hog" our thread all you want;)

Mimi left us the same type of thing in our room. It was very nice, although it scared us to death when we first walked in thinking someone was in the bed. She was a great mousekeeper. Maybe we will get her on monday when we check in.
:welcome: If that's important to you, you can always ask at check-in if there is a room available in Mimi's section. I would have been scared to death, too, but boy, she sure is creative:)

OH Disney Newb!!! Those pictures make me want to be back at WL sooooo badly!!!!
Your Lodge is calling you, can you hear it?:listen:

The day we arrive is a non park day. We want to go to Downtown Disney after getting settled since it will be a non park day for us. How long will it take us to take the bus there or should we plan on a taxi?
:welcome: We never take a taxi, but the ride to DTD is the longest, IMHO. After being picked-up at WL, I believe it then goes to the GF, Typhoon Lagoon (this leg alone took 25 minutes) and then about 5 more minutes to DTD. Plan on about 35 minutes to get there and an hour to get back. It seems that every time we want to leave DTD, the bus back seems to take forever to arrive and then stops at the PI stop to switch bus drivers - probably our bad luck. Then it's a stop at the water park before getting back to WL. Though I've never done it, some have suggested (if you have the time) taking the boat to POR and perhaps going over to POFQ for a beignet or a bite to eat at the food court, then taking a bus to MK. From there, you can take a direct bus back to WL. It breaks up the trip back a little.

I didn't know there was one until I got home and read it on here. No card in the room or anything

Just stopping by to say hi to everyone. Sadly we don't have a trip booked yet, but I *know* we are going in the fall again next year. It just feels so much real when it is booked.

Hope everyone at the Lodge is enjoying themselves. Hope everyone who just came back is still enjoying the wonderful memories fresh in their minds. Anyone who is about to go I wish you the safest of travels!

?

Haha yes she said yes!! She was very surprised. We have pictures and video luckily so once I get some up I will post them here.

We are looking at doing a very small legal ceremony somewhere at WDW and then having our actual wedding on the Disney Dream in the summer of 2014!

Were you there after 12/2? I don't know if this will help you at all, but ktlm posted this HERE on 12/11:

I don't know if they have cards in the room yet or if they are going to, as several people seem to have gotten the offer by E-mail during their stay. The offer went into WDW's system as available the morning Dec. 2. Any time you don't have a card in the room, you can always dial extension 8844 from the room phone and ask what is available (I called Dec 1, and nothing and Dec. 2, the new offer came out). The front desk usually isn't much help, so be sure to dial 8844, which is the bounceback offer extension. Also be aware that they no longer are going by the day you check in like they did in the past, and applying the discount to your whole stay. If only the first 2 days of your trip are bounceback dates, then you only get the discount for those 2 days, and you pay full price the rest of the trip.

The e-mail people have been getting states:

My Fiancée and I are flying to Disney World this Sunday. We were originally booked for Port Orleans Riverside from December 16th-23rd. Today he begged me to call Disney and see if there was any availability at Wilderness Lodge so we can upgrade (he had fallen in love with the resort while looking up pictures online). Yes, that is correct…we changed our reservations 3 days before we are due to arrive :rolleyes2. Yes, we are crazy. I am freaking out. This entire time I have planned our trip based around our stay at POR, I knew which was the best bus stop to use, what the fastest way to get to the lobby etc. I have never stayed at Wilderness Lodge before let alone a deluxe. I have no idea what I am in for! I have been thrown for a loop ever since we changed our ressies for WL a couple of hours ago. What are the basic things I need to know about this resort? I am going to try to read back as much as I can through this thread. Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated!

Congratulations on the upgrade, especially with such short notice at Christmastime. The WL is going to be so beautiful, it should be great.

Compared to POR there isn't much to worry about because the resort is relatively compact. There is one bus stop, right in front between WL and VWL, and there are busses for each park, FW, and DTD. You do have the option of boat transportation to CR, FW, or MK which takes a little longer but is a beautiful trip and worth doing at least once. Roaring Fork is centrally located down on the pool level between the two wings of the hotel and is a great snack bar and your mug refill spot. Everything at WL is under one roof, so you should figure it out pretty quick. Enjoy the decorations, the great atmosphere, the views of Bay Lake, and the proximity to MK. Have a great time! :thumbsup2

We did the same thing in October. We were going to stay at AoA and changed 1 day before our package started, after spending the night at Pop. We were so glad we switched.

Rub Humphrey's (the bear on the bottom of the totem pole in front of the Mercantile) nose for good luck and the rest will take care of itself.

Also be prepared to not want to go back to POR after you stay at WL. :thumbsup2

We prefer the boat to MK over the bus. It's an enjoyable relaxing trip over the lake.

If you aren't in a rush and want to try the monorail - take the boat to the Contemporary, then the monorail to TTC, then to Epcot. Everyone has to ride the monorail once while at Disney. Depending on how much extra time you have, you can ride the monorail and stop at all the other Deluxes to look around and realize what a great choice you made staying at WL instead of any of the other Deluxes. ;)

When you come back grab a drink and sit by the big fireplace in the lobby.

Depending on the room you get you may be able to see the MK fireworks if you are in the North wing.

The Electric Water Parade is a little hokey (but it's classic Disney), so head out to the beach at 9:35.

Don't know if they are booked out yet but you might want to try the sleigh/carriage ride from Ft. Wilderness. While WL has a great feel during the day, it's even more awesome at night.

Enjoy!

We were there December 7th to 11th. No email either. Bummer, oh well!

I'm am beyond excited right now!!! We did it! We booked our first ever WL Christmas trip!!! We have never been during the Christmas season and on top of it....we will be there for my bday!!!!!! So we are thrilled. We requested north wing / top floor and I booked a woods view room... Do I need to call back and ask for a MK side? I was thinking other side of wing would be court view. Am I correct? Just wanted to make sure we are in the MK side... Again I do realize its just a request but hoping it will work out since we booked this early!!!! Soooooo excited!
