Cleft lip

Thanks for all the good wishes. We're going to try and do a blog of our trip-- no promises I'll keep it up once we leave. It's at http://spaces.msn.com/members/madchina/

We just found out we'll be leaving on Jan 15th. This is the first trip I haven't made the travel arrangements for (being a Disney planning obsessive person) and it's making me nuts!

Kelli- thanks for posting. It's very encouraging. The picture is beautiful and you look very tall.

Thanks for all the positive words about my wedding photo...yes, I am very tall! HA!! I actually wore flip flops with my wedding dress so that I wouldn't just tower over my husband!

By the way...as far as a cleft lip only. Typically the problems with feeding, speech and hearing are related to a cleft palate. It is the separation and weakness of the muscles of the palate that is the source of all these problems. So, a cleft lip only should really cause no problems other than cosmetic (assuming that the cleft lip is non-syndromic). Personally, as far as my lip is concerned. I just had my initial repair as an infant and then when I was about 14 they re-cut it and sewed it back up since my face had grown and it was kind of stretching. But, again, that was just purely cosmetic.

Kelli- Good luck to you in your studies! I can't imagine going through grad. school with a husband and kids! You will be a great therapist with all of your experience and empathy for families. I have found that I am a much more compassionate therapist now that I am a mom.

Belle-
Thanks so much! It definitely is a challenge but I LOVE it and am very passionate about it so that makes it a little easier. Plus, I have to admit that I have a wonderful husband who is an enormous help with the kids (shhh...don't tell him I said that :)

By the way, I am originally from Evansville, IN...that's pretty close to you isn't it? I haven't lived there since I was 10 so I'm not entirely sure of all the geography!

South Bend is in northern Indiana- about 10 minutes from Michigan where I live, so not close to Evansville. I did go to school in Indianapolis and rad school at IU in Bloomington which is southern. LOL!

Hello,
I two out of my 4 children were born with the cleft lip and pallate. My 14 (almost 15) year old daughter and my 8 year old son. It is very hard as a mother and I couldnt understand why my children had to be different. There are times when I notice (especially my daughter) upset because she is different. She now goes to counseling once a week and it helps. Just might be something to consider for the future. But who knows.. Every child reacts so differently. I will try and post a pic of my 14 and 8 year old later today!

We have a baby at our center who has sever acid reflux. We discoverd he does a ton better if we feed him sitting up. If hes in a upright pisiton when he eats and for about a half hour afterwards he dosent spit up. Hes very small for his age (5 months but looks like a newborn).
