Have stayed in both St Petes Beach and Clearwater Beach over the years and liked them both for different reasons.
Clearwater twice and liked Pier 60, easy access to boats for Dolphin watching and got Hilton Clearwater Beach on Priceline for £45 (not weekend)
St Petes many times and liked ability to stroll to a restaurant, hotel access to beach and beach bars and laidback atmosphere.
In both areas hotels charge a lot at weekends (Fri/Sat) and are noisier due to US weekend visitors and also charge a lot to park as it is beach hotel.
I too like others prefer St Petes, but would not insist on a gulf view room if price is an issue as beauty of St Petes or Clearwater is nightly sit or stroll on beach watching the sunset go down. Find a restaurant that has sunset view and watch and eat dinner in comfort.
Many hotels have efficiencies which have a small kitchen for a bit extra and most standard rooms are two large doubles and pay extra for 5th rollaway.

We went to Clearwater for a week and was bored stiff after 2 days. Bit of activity after 6pm on the pier but that was it, maybe it was time of year it was Oct.
