Trying to plan next years holiday but DH is wanting a week away from disney:scared1: :scared1: so we've decided on a compromise that if we have a week in disney he can have a week at the beach. So my question is can anybody recommend a good hotel either in clearwater or st petes?

Thanks in advance

Hi there fellow eeyore fan :)

We stayed in St Petes a few years ago, it was nice, although the first hotel we stayed in was awful! (Holiday Inn on the Beach) It looked great in the brochure and got good reviews but it was so bad we had to get Virgin to move us (filthy, broken aircon, very bad service and staff were frazzled (they said) it was because we'd arrived just as spring break ended)
Ended up in the Tradewinds Grand and the suite type rooms are lovely, helpful staff too :)

Clearwater is nice too, I think both would be good to stay at, they're not that far apart, we stayed for 5 days, i'm not a beachy person coz i burn easily, a week would be too long for me. But if you are a beach babe a week will be nice and relaxing after a hectic week in WDW ;)

We've stayed at both enjoyed both.

The best hotel we have stayed at is the Marriott Suites at Sand Key in Clearwater. Very nice hotel with seperate lounge area in the room. It backs onto the intracoastal waterway so all the balconies look onto this. The beach is across the road - and it is a very good beach - part of a nature reserve I think.

There is a boardwalk next to the hotel which has a few shops, 2 very nice restaurants and an authentic diner. You can then also drive into Clearwater itself (about 5/10 mins) for more options.

My Step mum and half brother live in Clearwater and we've spent a lot of time in the area - I personally would go with Clearwater every time. Beautiful Beaches and great access to restaurants and shopping malls - terrific!!:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

How about Treasure Island?

It's just to the North of St Pete's and about 20 minutes drive from Clearwater. We visit here whenever we are in Florida (just for 3 or 4 days) and tend to go for the smaller beachside motels or apartments.

In November, we stayed at the Beachside Palms apartments which were literally right on the beach. A one bedroomed apartment with a Gulf View - just great!

TI is a lot quieter than St Pete's or Clearwater but still has a good selection of hotels and restaurants. Have a look at

We've stayed at the Hilton on Clearwater Beach, nice hotel on the beachfront, would stay there again :)

Only been to Clearwater, didn't like the hotel (Hilton) or Clearwater might be OK for a couple of days but we were there for a week with no car, used Virgin transfer. Worst week we have had in Florida but others like it a lot.

I think that a car is essential for Clearwater - I can't imagine being there without one - I would also add that we love sunbathing, shopping and eating out - so it is bliss for us, but I have had friends that ended up going back to Orlando because they got bored!!:lmao:

That would have been us if we had a car, it was only our 3rd trip to US back 1999, all new to us and just learning.
We don't like beaches, don't sunbathe a lot, don't shop and don't eat seafood(almost everywhere we saw was seafood)
All week just thinking why did we leave Orlando?:goodvibes

Have you considered maybe doing a long weekend at Clearwater in the middle of your holiday (over a weekend would be best to avoid the busier days in the Orlando parks)?

We did this back in August 2007, staying at the Marriott on Sand Key (Clearwater) for three nights (calling at Busch Gardens on the way). We found that after a few days of lazing around, we were actually itching to get back to the Theme Parks, and a number of people we spoke to around the pool said that they felt that a week was proabably too much.

However, not everyone is the same, so maybe a week would be suited to you :)

This is what we do, at the weekend, we head to the beach. Avoids the crowds in the parks.
