Clearskies photographic Journey to the World and Beyond - 8 theme parks & much more

Definitely give your 50mm f/1.8 a try April. In most cases I set my ISO up to 6400 on the "dark rides". My camera is pretty good with high ISO but I still used Noise reduction software when I got home to help with the noise that will definitely be there at such a high ISO. If I thought I could get away with it when shooting I brought the ISO down lower more but looking at my pictures now I kept it at 6400 most of the time. I think your camera maxes out at ISO 3200 which is what I recommend you use. There is also something you can do if even at ISO 3200 and you lens wide open you are not getting a quick enough shutter. With your 50mm lens you can set your camera in Aperture Priority with f/1.8 set and set your EV (Exposure Compensation) to a value of -1. The pictures may be underexposed a bit and then you need to adjust in post processing (ex. Photoshop Elements) but you may get a shot you otherwise may not have come away with.

Also note that on the tougher rides (ex. Dinosaur, Peter Pan, Haunted Mansion) I had to use Manual Focus since I could not "lock in" with Autofocus. Manual focus is not something I use very often and I struggle with it.

Let me know if you have any quations on this April.

Of for sure you need to bring up 498 to your travelling partners :-)

Thanks for the tips! I will definitely take your advice. Do you use Photoshop Elements? Do you work with RAW files or jpg?

Your photos are OUTSTANDING!!! I am enjoying your report. Thanks for sharing.:thumbsup2
Thank you so much Tammy! It is good to hear feedback. I appreciate it.
Oh, and :welcome:

Thanks for the tips! I will definitely take your advice. Do you use Photoshop Elements? Do you work with RAW files or jpg?
You're very welcome April. Glad to offer help where I can. Until this month I only used Photoshop Elements. I just recently purchased the full blown version of Photoshop. You can do a lot with Photoshop elements though and all of my pictures in this TR except a few recently edited ones were processed with Photoshop Elements. As far as RAW vs JPEG...my camera gives an option to capture both RAW and JPEG and I used that a lot but sometimes I just capture only JPEG if I am getting tight on space. You will see your memory cards fill up a heck of a lot faster when you capture RAW. I brought a laptop with me and I would transfer picture at night to the laptop and freed up space on memory cards.

Ahhh...you brought a laptop! That is such a great idea! I was wondering about that because the RAW images are like 20MB per photo on my camera! I was thinking I would have to get a trillion memory cards. :lmao: Thanks again for all of your advice- I really appreciate the help! :thumbsup2

Sorry, I meant to provide an update earlier this weekend but we made a somewhat last minute decision to go away for the weekend to Williamsburg Va. We still have our 2 year passes for the Busch parks and my wife and daughter wanted to see a singer they had appearing this weekend named Colbie Caillat. I was not familiar with the name but my daughter played a few songs on youtube for me before we left and I recognized a couple. So, we headed down on Friday and on Saturday we had some fun in Water country USA and then headed over to Busch Gardens to see her sing. Let me tell you, it was a scorcher outside. While sitting in the stands waiting for the concert I pulled up weather.com and it said it was 99 degrees and it also indicated "feels like 113". Let me tell you it did feel like that 113 degrees also. Holy cow was it hot. It felt as hot as we have had it feel in Orlando on any of our prior trips. Funny thing was that I also pulled up Orlando on weather.com and it indicated 20 degrees cooler at 78 degrees! It was raining in Orlando at the time though.

Anyway, as far as Colbie is concerned I have to give her huge props. She sang for over an hour in the stiffling heat and she also sang great. Oh, and I did not think that she was lip syncing either. Here is a picture for any fans out there.

We stopped a bit in Washington DC on the way back and had a great overall weekend.

Anyway, regarding my TR, I hope to have an update tomorrow night.

:rotfl: Perhaps not a trillion cards but I sure would need a heck of a lot myself. Using some form of alternate mass storage is a necessity when shooting raw images on a trip greater than a few days. I am glad to provide any advice I can to help!

Wow at it being 99 degrees! :scared1:

Am glad you enjoyed your weekend and thumbs up to that singer for lasting in the heat :thumbsup2 Don't think I have heard of her. Look forward to an update later.

Great photo of Colbie! :thumbsup2 That must have been tough for her to perform in that kind of heat. This past weekend was even unbearable here in MA!

It was Brutal. The water in the Water Park was not even cold.

I had never heard of her either but she has a nice voice. If you ever want to look her up a few good songs that she sang were
"Brighter Than the Sun"
"Fallin' For You"
"Bubbly"
"I Do"

I am finishing up my update soon.

I can't imagine how much she was melting on the stage and she did not let it affect her performance.

oh, before I get to my next update...since you know I love showing you bird pictures....here are some from this weekend at the DC National Zoo.

Let's see...I last left you off in EPCOT and we had completed our touring of the West Side of Future World. Yes, I did my homework since my last installment and looked it up and it is indeed the West Side of EPCOT. Now if I would only spend the time to use spell check but that's a different story. Anyway....let's move on...

It's time we head on over to the other side of Future world. I ran ahead and grapped FPs for Test Track and then met up with the others at Mission Space. Some of the braver souls in our group headed to the Orange Side. I sadly am not one of them. I am not a big fan of spinning rides. I can just about deal with something like the teacups ride but when done but I do not walk away feeling better for the experience. I'll suffer through it for the kids. Mission Space though is another story. I've never done the Orange side and I have seen enough comments to keep me scared enough to try it in fear of ruining me for a spell. Fortunately the kids do not want to experience it either just the other adults in our group. Anyway, we did need a responsible adult to stay with the kids on the Green side ....and since we couldn't find one I went instead.

One thing I would say about the Green side though is that I think it is too tame. There is nothing gong on there with spinning at all. I actually wish I could give you a lesser degree of spinning going on in the Green side so that I could at least get some idea what kind of trouble I would be in for on the grown up side.

I think it would also be more interesting if there were diferent outcomes based on whether your team is pressing the buttons correctly. There is not a lot of excitement in executing your assignments when it does not really matter if you do it or not.

After the ride the kids got caught up for a long time in the interactive play area which you are dumped into after the ride. There is an arcade like game there called "Mission: SPACE Race" that they got snared into. The game takes participants and divides them into 2 teams. They have a lot of room for participants, I think 30 per team, but when we did it there were not as many people staying to play and we had about 10-15 people per team. The teams race against each other to repair parts of a spacecraft. I did it once with the kids and it was fun. They wanted to play again when done but once was enough for me so I bowed out but the rest of our crew stayed and played again. They even played one more time after that. I think the game takes about 15 min so this experience drained a fair amount of time but the kids had a great time with it so it was all good. Here some pics I took while wandering around waiting for the kids to finish up.

Next up we had a "need for speed" and went to Test Track. The line was not bad at all so we went through twice. Once with our FPs and once without. The other road tests are ok but we're all here for the speed test aren't we? It's amazing how much faster 65 mph seems in your test track vehicle as opposed to a real car.

After our second spin on TT it was about 5 min to 5PM so we decided to make our way over to Canada to check in for our Le Cellier ADR at 5:35. So from 11:15 to 5:35 we saw most of Future World with the exception of the Circle of Life movie, Ellen's Energy Adventure and Innoventions East. That also included Lunch at Sunshine Seasons and 2 rides on Soarin and Test Track and a bunch of time in the Spaceship Earth interactive area. Sept is such a good time of year to go if you want to avoid large crowds. We have only been to Disney in late August, Sept and Oct and I think we have been spoiled. I don't think I could handle the peak summer times or the insane crowds like at Christmas time and Spring Break.

It's rare for us not to be rushing to get to our ADR so it was nice to be able to take a leisurely stroll to get to our ADR.

We got there at about 5:15 and checked in. I went off to take a picture of the waterfall while waiting.

We soon got into "the Cellar" and fortunately we found that this Cellar is nothing like mine otherwise people would be tripping over toys and cursing and erupting they are going to get a dumpster and throw everything out. I actually like the atmosphere of this cellar. Here is the only pic I took of the inside of Le Cellier. Sorry is does not really give you too much of an idea of what the inside space is like. Take my word for it. It is nice.

We had dined at Le Cellier on out last trip for lunch and we fell in love with the the pretzel bread, the family thought the famous Cheese soup was ...eh..ok. The steaks were good but did not really knock our socks off and I was not quite seeing all the hype. However my family was requesting it again this trip even though I wanted to try somewhere else so it made a good enough impression on them. So I reserved it again this trip. In retrospect, I am glad we did since this may be the last time we go for Dinner (at least on the meal plan). Now hold on a sec, it was not because the food was not good or the experience was bad (on the contrary it was better than last time) but it is due to the change over to 2 meal credits now on the Dining Plan. I think I would opt for other places if I wanted to eat at a 2 credit restaurant.

I think we all ordered some cut of steak. It may be a requirement there otherwise you are shunned. I ordered the NY strip but without any butter on it. Here is a pic.

original.jpg

It would be nice if they gave you some type of vegetable but we ordered some on the side.

Ok, so where did this fall within my ratings. Well, let me tell you this was an outstanding steak this time. This was much better than our lunch the prior year. I am not sure if was better because the lunch steak is generally not as good as the dinner steak or if now that they are going down the 2 creit route they stepped it up a notch or what but I came out very satisfied.

I now have a new a leader in my steak ratings from this trip (remember that). Here are the new standings....

1. Le cellier
2. Sharks Underwater Grill
3. Kona
4. Turf Club (pretty close with Kona)
5. WCC

We have one more horse in the running with dinner at the Coral Reef dinner our next day.

After dinner my plans were to head to the MK for the MAin Street Electrical Parade and then Wishes. The kids were not up with it but my fortunately my Wife was. So, the kids stayed with their cousins (and Aunt and Uncle) and my wife and I headed to MK.

We will pick up from there in our next installment.

More great pics! Thanks for sharing. I haven't seen the inside of Mission Space (and don't expect to unless they invent a magic pill to keep me from getting motion sick) so I enjoyed your pics.

Thanks also for the Le Cellier review. I just booked ADRs for our January trip today. I got a lunch ADR for Le Cellier and a Dinner ADR for Kona. We've never eated at either restaurant so I appreciated your takes on each of them. The earliest Kona I could get was for 6:20pm and Wishes is at 8pm that night so I'm hoping we won't be rushed to get out to the beach in time.

Looking forward to MSEP and Wishes pics in the next posting!

BTW . . . as a fan of the Disney Picture of the Day thread, I highly encourage you to post on that thread. You have many unique and beautiful shots I'm sure others would enjoy. :)

Thank you MNTwinsMom. You do not need that magic pill to experience Mission Space. I get motion sickness as well but there is nothing to fear on the Green Side. There is no spinning at all from what I can tell. The only people that I think would have a problem are those that are claustrophobic.

January must be a great time to go as well. I think you will enjoy both Kona and Le Cellier. I am heading to both again in our Aug/Sept trip. Le Cellier is lunch this time so I'll see if it is different from the Dinner experience. I think you should be fine with the 6:20 PM ADR. When we went to Kona we had a 7:10 ADR and 9PM wishes and we had plenty of time to spare. It is a quick walk to the beach and there is plenty of space there so you don't need to get there too far in advance (at least both times we went).

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll have to look for that thread.

Here I am, catching up, as usual...I should really just give up the pretense of ever being up-to-date on the TRs I follow anymore!

I love your SE pics! It's amazing how...well...real all the characters look. I feel like you've done such an amazing job of capturing their, um, personalities. Especially when you take into account that they don't actually have any! :rotfl:

I love the buffalo picture in the Land, too.

I'm glad you liked Le Cellier better this time. I still think it's a bit overrated, but maybe it has gotten better now.

And now on to the really important stuff:

I was working on another update but I made a snap decision to head over to watch the Deathly Hallows.

Instead of an update today I'll give you a little insight into my insanity. Here are my plans for out upcoming trip at the end of Aug:

For the time being we'll call it "Clearskies Crazy Cram-packed Conception"

Day 1 - Sat 8/27 - Check In to POFQ, boat to DTD for Dinner
Day 2 - Sun 8/28 - Busch Gardens Tampa in Day. Dinner at Kona, MK EMH at night
Day 3 - Mon 8/29 - IOA and US in Day, Dinner at WCC, DS EMH at night
Day 4 - Tue 8/30 - DS all day, lunch at MM, stay for Fantasmic
Day 5 - Wed 8/31 - Breakfast at CP, MK all day, Dinner at Tonys Town Square, Wishes
Day 6 - Thu 9/1 - EP all day, Le Cellier at 1PM, Dinner somewhere in World Showcase, Illuminations
Day 7 - Fri 9/2 - Sea World/Aquatica, Coral Reef for Dinner and EPCOT EMH at night
Day 8 - Sat 9/3 - AK all day, possible Wild Africa Trek, Cape May Cafe for Dinner, stroll Boardwalk area after dinner
Day 9 - Sun 9/4 - Pack in AM, head to MK at some point, 1900 PF for Dinner, MK EMH at night
Day 10 - Mon 9/5 - Leave at some ungodly hour to catch 8AM flight home.

I am not sure I will be able to pull off all of this and I think for a lot of the nighttime activities I will likely be flying solo or if I am lucky I'll get my son to join me.

I hope to have an update tomorrow.

We will be at WDW at the same time! Granted, you will be there for 10 whole days while I will be there for a measly 2...but please say hi if you see me at Epcot! I just booked a total I'm-an-addict-and-need-a-fix trip for Sept 1-3. I'll be mostly at the MK doing research, but I was planning to hit Epcot for an early evening stroll on 9/1 and EMH on 9/2, so maybe we'll run into each other!

First off- AWESOME bird photos!!!
Second- I agree about Mission Space- the Green side should be a little more intense.
Your EPCOT photos are amazing. I love the one of SSE with the palm trees in front.

Great bird pics and I have to agree that the pygmy falcon is very cute.

I will definitely be sticking to the green side of Mission Space - enjoyed seeing your pics of the ride.

Love the waterfall pic! :thumbsup2 Am glad you enjoyed Le Cellier and found a new leader in your steak ratings.

OMG, how awesome would Mission: Space be if, when you didn't do your responsibilities, everything goes haywire, and the mission fails or something? That would rock.

I was looking at your trip plans. I was actually just pricing today sending my mom and dad down there for an actual anniversary trip (meaning just the two of them) from August 31 - September 4. So not exactly me, but we'd be down there at the same time in spirit. :lmao:

Yay! :cheer2:Another great set of pictures! Thanks for sharing.:thumbsup2
Thank you Tammy!! I am happy to share! Thank you for posting!

Here I am, catching up, as usual...I should really just give up the pretense of ever being up-to-date on the TRs I follow anymore!
:rotfl: I have the same problem so no issue from me. Just glad to not lose you altogether. Thank you for sticking with me!

I love your SE pics! It's amazing how...well...real all the characters look. I feel like you've done such an amazing job of capturing their, um, personalities. Especially when you take into account that they don't actually have any! :rotfl:

I love the buffalo picture in the Land, too.
Thank you Nory. SE is definitely not a thrill ride but we love it. I am glad that I can get my kids to still go on since it is a must do for me. Um....the characters are real right?

I'm glad you liked Le Cellier better this time. I still think it's a bit overrated, but maybe it has gotten better now.
I'll see after trip but I won't mind too much if it is not as good since I really want to go to other places in the WS as well but now I have my kids requesting the "Steak place" each time.

I did not realize you were going again in Sept. I will definitely say hi if I see you there. I'll have to PM you a pic of my family when I can dig one up so if you see a crazed man lugging a backpack full of camera equipment in the intolerable heat you'll know for sure it is me.

First off- AWESOME bird photos!!!
Second- I agree about Mission Space- the Green side should be a little more intense.
Your EPCOT photos are amazing. I love the one of SSE with the palm trees in front.
Thank you April! Yes, I hate to say it but the Green side is just too boring the way it is right now. I just can't sign up for the intensity I fear on the Orange side.

I will definitely be sticking to the green side of Mission Space - enjoyed seeing your pics of the ride.

Thank you Tanz! At least Zaheer should be ok with the Green side as well.

Actually, I think the best steak I had at Disney was years ago in a Contemporary in a place that is sadly no longer there. It was a sad day when I found out that they closed down the Concouse Steakhouse.

This was an amazing trip report and such fantastic pictures. I especially enjoyed the US information/pictures as we have not been there in over 10 years or so. I think I might try to squeeze a day in at IOA in our upcoming Sept. trip. I'm also thinking of doing my very first trip report, but somewhat nervous after reading yours and so many other great reports.

Thanks for an enjoyable read!
