Cleaning your "house" before you leave?

This will be our first trip "home". I understand the housekeeping policy of towels and trash on day 4. But my question was how do you leave your room upon check out? I assume you leave the trash and towels there, but are you expected to dust, vacuum, etc.? I understand its a home away from home, but its still vacation!

DVC rooms are serviced by housekeeping between guests. There is no obligation to do any more than you would when departing another hotel.

We don't "clean" our room, but we do tidy up. I throw all soap bars and shampoo bottles in trash. I pile all the dirty towels in the tub and pick up any trash, paper, magazines etc. I would hate to leave a room completely gross. But that is just me.

That's us too. Plus we'll ditch all the food from the fridge and start the dishwasher.

Like the others, we tidy up, put all towels in the tub, all trash in the containers.

We also start the dishwasher if we've used any dinnerware that morning, prior to leaving.

That all sounds great. I have a huge pet peeve about leaving a washer/dryer/dishwasher running if we are not home.. So we will do the dishes by hand. Its only DW and I, how much of a mess can we make ?

No, don't do that. The next occupants would MUCH rather you sanitize the dishes in the dishwasher than wash them by hand. In all likelihood Mousekeeping will be in before the dishwasher is done anyway.

WHile it's ture than many timeshares do ask you to clean before leaving your unit on check-out, DVC is different. They do have thorough housecleaning between guests. We usually do enough to make their job a little easier and faster by gathering all the garbage, tieing the bags, stripping the beds, putting all towels in the tub, running the dishwasher and throwing away or finding a new home for the leftover food. If it's something we can take home, we do. If not, we throw any opened items and take unopened items out to the parking lot to look for someone who is just arriving. Last month we gave half a case of bottled water to an arriving couple.

Add us to this list too! We run the dishwasher and I have the kids take the garbage and recycling out also. I know how much I love to get in my room early so I don't want to be the cause of someone else not having the same experience.

Is it okay to leave unopened items for housekeeping? Last trip we had laundry detergent and softner sheets that had not even been used so I left them in the laundry area with a note to take them. Was that alright to do? What about unopened soda, snacks or food? Not proper to leave in the room?

It really isnt that big of a deal. We can run the dishwasher the night before we leave. We will just leave it closed and locked after the cycle is run. I am just anal when it comes to fire hazards and leaving something like that running when we are not there scares the pooh out of me!

I was fortunate enough to grab the Owners Locker 24 hour deal that they were running last week, so we can throw a lot of our left over stuff in our locker now.

Exactly. When the sad day comes we don't waste any time getting out either. We're early risers so we are usually out by 9am at the latest. We like to think we're making someone's day by turning over an early room that cleans quickly.

Nothing like arriving at 11 am and having a room ready. Like adding a day to your stay.

That's always been our understanding too. We do load all the dirty dishes into the dishwasher, but we just don't run it.

Clever idea! I never thought of doing that! Last time we left bottled water on the counter hoping maybe the mousekeepers would use it. I'll have to try it next time. It sure would make me a happy DVCer!

We do the same as above; we strip beds and put linens in a pile, we empty the trash and run the dishwasher. We usually leave the empty soap package on the counter so they will know it has been run.

We also feel that it is an effort to make the unit turn quicker. Hopefully we will be on the receiving end of the same. Most of the time, we are!

I don't bother to strip the beds - except the sofabed - if we've used that we at least leave it out so housekeeping knows its been used. I just think that one is easy to overlook.

DH feels it is easier to see if we have left something behind - ie under beds. Can you say AR?

We usually tidy up before we leave as well. We put our towels in a pile over the tub and put the toiletries that we are not taking home in the garbage. If the sinks are wet and messy, I would just go over them with a towel. We usually toss any unopened food in the garbage in the kitchen. Any unopened food that requires refrigeration is usually left in the the fridge (with a note).

We don't however, take the garbage or recycling out and we don't strip the linens off the beds.

We leave everything tidy before we leave and usually leave a thank you note on the tip envelope.

However, if we spill something, we definitely clean it up and if we need some cleaners we would call down and ask them for some. However, in the two or three times we have done this, they did not let us clean it, they said they will do it...I feel a little bad when they do this but apparently, they cannot let you do it.

Here is what really makes the housekeeping staff happy - - - strip the beds - just leave the linens on the floor - dirty towels in the tubs - trash in bags. The housekeepers are not allowed to take any food product that has been opened - nor any alcoholic beverages! They can and do love any unopened products. Remove any open products from the fridge and put in garbage bags.

Just doing that little bit for the housekeepers helps them so much and puts a large smile on their face!!
